Canoe Portage Chat and Walk-Along - Pt 10, Solo Canoe Trip, June 2019
Portages beyond the road-accessed lakes and rivers are what make back-country canoe routes. Without portages, its front country. Join me for a 500m portage carrying my canoe, with a monologue about stuff relevant to solo canoe tripping.
Part 10 in this series from June 2019: Day 3 of a planned week-long solo canoe trip, Boreal Forest, Northwestern Ontario, mid-June, 2019. Trip was cut short due to a severe pinched nerve issue that was becoming unsustainable.
Sorry for taking a year to get the editing and posting done!
Thanks for watching, please stay tuned for more to come.

Paddling Out Chat About Solo Safety and Stuff - Pt 9, Solo Canoe Trip, June 2019
zhlédnutí 5KPřed 4 lety
Chatting about solo canoe tripping safety, while paddling out from an unexpectedly early trip end. The Canadian stroke in classic leaned-up canoe style is how I am paddling. Safety topics such as: drinking water straight from the lake vs. maybe not due to the seasonal tree pollen dump on the water; taking one's time, portage safety especially when alone. Due to a pinched never issue that was ca...

Part 8 in the series - I had to cut short this 7-day solo canoe trip from June 2019, due to an issue. The trip was planned for a week, and my plan was to use my new Silky saws to clean up more portage trails on the route, and create a new campsite on the next lake over. But those plans were cancelled by end of day 2. Please stay tuned, I have more footage from this trip to edit and upload, and ...
My best fire lighting method- Pt 7, Solo Canoe Trip, June 2019
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 4 lety
I show my best firecraft design/method for fire lighting on wet ground: A dry platform is made with a mini wind tunnel underneath, which creates a bottom draw oxygen supply for the igniting tinder and kindling. I use my favourite fuels: black spruce splits, branches and twigs, and birch bark. The draw is enhanced by the fire rock set with the high chimney rock. This fire size and rock set is de...
Black Spruce Harvest - Pt 6, Solo Canoe Trip, June 2019
zhlédnutí 3,9KPřed 4 lety
Black Spruce (Picea mariana) is my favourite tree and firewood source in the Boreal Forest. The very fine twigs are the world’s best kindling IMO. The dead branches of the biggest trees are thin and can be collected easily by hand, or quickly by saw or axe. The tree grows straight, narrow and tall, and in stands there are usually abundant dead standing stems in the understory, easy to harvest, ...

Having slept in late, in no rush for today, I share brunch with you under the tarp, during light rain, on a beautiful bed of feather moss, and talk about camping stuff. Brunch first course is OvaEasy eggs, and second course is hot cereal, with a lot of hot coffee (instant coffee...ya I know). Feather moss is a multi-species group of terrestrial mosses that form everywhere on the Boreal Forest f...

Its late when I get to my campsite in a lake one portage in from my starting lake. What I thought was my "secret" campsite where almost no one ever travels to for many years, was in fact visited by others since I was there last. I comment on how different their bush camping style is from mine, and a small note on bush etiquette. I discuss my favourite 1-pot meal. The audio provides the ingredie...

I brought the Silky KATANABOY 650 and BIGBOY 2000 to help me clear blowdown on the portage trails. I planned to clear two trails on this trip, and Day 1 shows what I found on Day 1. First time using the Katanaboy. AWESOME! (of course!). I had some struggles with sawing logs from underneath, but I am sure that with practice I will figure out that technique. I finished the underneath cuts with th...
"Canoe-side Chat" Paddling in the Rain - Pt 2, Solo Canoe Trip, June 2019
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 5 lety
Canoe trips are slow, and often involve hours of paddling in the rain and not so fun conditions. I thought I would show the real life of the slow experience of solo paddling through our northern lakes when it is raining, and just chatting about stuff that matters at the moment, such as rain gear, hypothermia, bilge water, and of course the weather. The paddling style shows J-stroke and Canadian...

Drinking Lake Water Unfiltered?

I DO NOT recommend that anyone drink lake water unfiltered. Staying well hydrated in the heat and when working hard in the bush is critically important, especially when traveling solo in remote back-country. Pit & Mound Micro-Topography. Part 10: Solo 4-day canoe trip, Spring 2018

I walk back into the bush to show the phenomenon of "pit and mound" micro-topography. Pits and mounds are part of the 3D structure of the forest floor that is constantly being re-arranged via the energy involved in tree blow-down events. Boreal Forest pine and spruce trees are shallow-rooted with no tap root, and are routinely blown down. When this happens often their entire root mat is ripped ...

I have to admit I love the silky saws I use the 2000 and the 500. one simple trick is to either carry a wood wedge or make one on trail cut into the log half way until you start to feel the bind then drive the wedge into the top of the cut this will stop it binding and as you cut tap the wedge in deeper I also struggle with the under cuts with the 500 but the wedge thing stopped the need for that. great to see people clearing tail much appreciated.

Thanks for the great tribute to Phil Cotton and all the people I worked with over 13 summers in the Wabakimi area. I'll be heading up to the Savant Lake Crown Land area later this summer (August 2024) with a few veterans of many Wabakimi Project trips. We'll do a check and see how the portages are doing. Phil and his crews went through this area in 2008/2009. We might spruce up a few portages and clean up a few campsites but we won't have a chainsaw with us to clear the windfalls.

When I was homeless a lot of people don’t know that if you sleep in a very warm sleeping bag on dirt snow metal blacktop or concrete and it’s cold out that cold will eat right through your sleeping bag unless you have something under you. When I was homeless I’d use three layers of cardboard. I also had a one person tent that I through a comforter I found over top then hung up a tarp. This made my whole tent so insulated in just jeans and a sweatshirt and tshirt on I was warm at 35 degrees just sitting still there. If I would have added more then just one comforter I would have been a lot warmer but you can only add so much before the tent poles can’t take the weight and your tent starts to bend so what I’d do if you wanted to add more blankets it to put some strings on the blanket and then to some trees so it still touches your tent but lifts all the weight off of it. This setup got me through some extremely cold winters just on my body heat alone. But keep in mind when you get in your sleeping bag to go to sleep for awhile and wake up the whole tent will be freezing again though not as cold as having no insulation but when you sit back up it warms up fast. You don’t need to make an air hole either, enough air is able to come through the blankets but if you wanted to make a little air hole make it as low as possible because heat rises so you don’t want to loose all your heat.

Great to see you back HOOP! I completely agree with your comment that a narrow prospector makes for a superb choice of tripping boat. I also paddle a 16' prospector with a 34" beam (Evergreen 16') and much prefer it to the wider and slower 36" wide prospectors. However, my experience padding solo boats has led to arrive at a different conclusion than you regarding their relative speed as compared to a narrow prospector. In my experience, solo boats are not necessarily faster! My shorter (15') and narrower (28") Swift Raven is not faster than my 16' x 34" Evergreen - even though it would seem that it should be given the above specs. The reason for this is that the seat of the solo Raven is located further forward than the front seat is on my prospector (when paddled solo style from the bow). Why is this an issue you ask? When paddling my Swift Raven it is necessary to linger longer on the correction of each J stroke in order for the boat to track in a line. When paddling the prospector I do not need to linger as long on the correction part of the J stroke and can paddle at much faster speeds given that I am seated closer to the stern of the canoe. This has been my experience with the above canoes and other's mileage may vary. Thank you for your content! Cheers!

I've been an active follower of your channel for a long time, and being now converted to mostly solo tripping (not by choice) I'm intrigued by your videos and your solo adventures. I've been canoe tripping since my first canoe trip into Algonquin park in 1968, and have continued to canoe trip each year as often as I can. I am however, not in the same class as you with respect to the number of trips you've done, and the number of places you've been. As I mentioned i reverted in the last few years to travelling solo most of the time after tripping friends have slowly been unable to continue for various reasons. In my mid 70's my trips now have become less about travelling fast and greater distances and more about relaxing, enjoying the outdoors and each day travelling shorter distances. It's been 2 years since my last solo trip into the boreal - Wabakimi PP - with the last couple of years being primarily solo trips into LSPP and Algonquin. As long as I can still get my canoe over my head I will continue. I would love at some point to have the opportunity to chat with you about some of your solo trips and how you manage them. Not getting any younger. Peter
