Kai's mental illness doesn't justify his actions. I'm still with Bonnie's since Kai's a ticking time bomb and no one knows if he's ever saying the truth. But with the show's shenanigans, I wouldn't if he's redeemed. I mean the show redeemed Damon so.

What people don't understand is he had nothing. He never had a real family, never had friends, never had hope, never had anyone who loved him. He was alone and he's always been alone. He was a child (well 22 but still) and they abandoned him. He wasn't born evil and even if he was it was because of his coven that he would be been. And ppl say he delivered EVERYTHING that he got but there are so many characters that have don't far worse that ended up much happier. I feel like the only way you can understand him is if you've been as lonely as him and as someone who never had any friends and wasn't always close to my family he kinda hits pretty close to home. Kai’s wasn't broken... They destroyed him and left nothing for him to hold on to. He betrayed Bonnie but she also betrayed him just as much and she was only locked in the prison world for a year while he was locked away for most of his life. How anyone can say he deserved the hand he was dealt is beyond me because he didn't deserve most of the things he got. He was tricked, disowned, abused, bonded, suicidal, self-loathing, and more than anything he was alone. Almost every character in the story had at least one person who cared for them but Kai he had nobody. He lived without love and he died without it. Imagine your family locking you away for most of your life because they put you on an endless path and called you trash for following it. His life was cruel... He wasn't.
