Custom Turning and Boring Tool Holders for Sherline Lathe Compound, Internal Threading Demonstration
If you just want to see the holders, just go the the last minute.
These are some custom tool holders that I came up with for the compound slide on my Sherline lathe, .375" turning tools and .125" to .375" Boring bars (using bushings). The video demonstrates single pointing an internal .750-16UNF thread using an inverted tool post.
This was my first experience using the change gears on the Sherline Lathe, so it is something that I should get better at. The change gears allow you to cut nearly any thread that you could want, including Metric and left hand. I had bored a few tapers to see how the inverted tool post performed. It did well and the test tapers were on Ductile Cast Iron and 1018 Steel.
The stock compound is designed to use inverted .250" turning tools and be used on the back side of the cross slide. The compound itself is very smooth and the fit and finish are excellent.
There are photos and captions at the end of the video that show and describe the other holders.
Thank you for watching. The video is intended to be informative and has no real entertainment value, (sorry about that).

I will add some still photos at some point. The little Unimat has been a fun project and it has evolved into precise little instrument. I will be using it to make small parts for musical instruments and antique phonographs. In addition what is in the video, I also performed some maintenance, (repacked the spindle bearings, disassembling the machine, cleaning and adjusted everything). The turnin...

It's been a while since I rode the Park loop. I've done it many times and I never tire of the beauty and the feeling of peace that I get when I spend time in Acadia National Park. This ride was on September 26th, 2023. I began the ride at 8:45 AM, 48 degrees Fahrenheit. It warmed up nicely and got into the high 60s during the afternoon. The Loop Road ride, including Cadillac is a little over 31...
Island Line Rail Trail 2023, Burlington Vermont to Grand Isle, (crossing Lake Champlain), eBike

Following the defunct Island Line rail trail out to Grand Isle. It was a wonderful day to be out and about in Vermont. The people that run the ferry are very friendly and helpful, (the ferry brings you and your bike across the 200’ section of open water). The trail is very well maintained, although you still have to watch out for the occasional wash out and pot hole. It’s a fun ride, but please...

September 1, 2023, Riding the back roads from Brownsville to South Woodstock Vermont and back and a visit to Charles Bronson's grave with a view of Mount Ascutney. It's the Vermont that tourists don't tend to see. The bike is a highly modified Yamaha Cross Core eBike, (Class 1, pedal assist only). It is now a very capable, flat bar gravel bike and a lot of fun. I hope that you enjoy the ride. T...

The North East USA has been very wet this year with flooding and washed out roads. I had planned a different route, but a detour changed my plans. It was still a nice, forty mile ride. The bike is a Yamaha Cross Core that has been modified to be a flat bar, gravel eBike. It has worked out very nicely and the eBike has been a great surprise. As an old roadie, I had no interest in eBikes, until I...
Stuart Beam Steam Engine, Castings to Finished Engine, Flyball Centrifugal Governor, Compressed Air

The engine is shown running on compressed air. I machined this engine from a set of Stuart Turner castings. I took some liberties with the design of the engine and governor. It runs well and I am happy with the final result. Thank you for watching.

Life with a dog, priceless. Life with four rescue dogs, even better.
I wish you fast recovery sir.
Great machine
Really nice! I have a Unimat that I tried to make better. Soon discovered that I need a precision tool to actually fix it. Got a Southbend lathe and stuck with that. Unimat is now a project in waiting.
Questions, questions, questions. What is mounted on top of the cross slide? Details!
Wow, very nice! The spindle/headstock milling post indexing slot/groove/dado is genius, which I could find one. Of everything here that modification is probably the most beneficial IMHO. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. It was a fun project.
I liked it, and got some ideas from your video. Thanks for posting it.
Very nice video. What year is the CrossCore and how did you modify it? Thanks!
Very interesting. Nice machine. I had that injections myself. Helped me allot
Nice manual setup.. (note-book recommend) You've made a great hobby small machine so much better [maybe the Chinese will take note.]
Thanks. It has been a nice project. The modifications are pretty straightforward. Form follows function and keeping it simple.
Very nice job, I have recently acquired a unimat so I found your mods very interesting especially the dial indicator mounts. The milling mod looks great but it would be a bit much for me. I would like to know how many amps is the transformer to run the 150w motor. Thanks for sharing.
Here is the spec on the power supply: 24V 16.5A 400W Universal Regulated Switching Power Supply, 100-240V AC to DC 24 Volt
Very impressive mods. I have screenshotted them all, both the video and the post. 50 years since I owned one of these. Being disabled, they are about the only lathe I can use now due to weight. Even a Unimat 3 is to heavy to handle.
I’m glad that you liked it. The Sherline lathe is probably another machine that might fit your needs. They have lots of accessories including a milling column. The Unimat is still a cool little machine and there is a Facebook group dedicated to them. Best of luck to you. I hope something comes your way.
Your engine looks great! I love beam engines - running slowly. 👍
Thank you. I like the slow running as well. I hate seeing them running fast.
