Victron - DC cables on your Victron Inverter Installation - Part 1 #victron #solar
It's so important to dimension and size your DC cabling and in this video I explain why. I'm using 70mm squared marine grade cabling and I discuss the importance of cable length versus diameter.

    For 3 phase systems I do not think the DC wiring "needs" to be all the same length. As each inverter is servicing different loads on each different phase. So they will never be perfectly balanced anyway. Only when you have parallel inverters all on one phase is it critical - as they they are sharing the load. Does not do any harm though! Well maybe a tiny bit more heat lose on the middle inverter.

    • @Handy-Harry
      @Handy-Harry Před 9 měsíci

      Correct: Only for units in parallel: Both the DC and AC wiring needs to be symmetrical PER PHASE

    • @TheKilowattChallenge
      @TheKilowattChallenge Před 7 měsíci

      Yeah, that makes a lot of sense, actually. I have quoted the Victron Wiring Handbook several times as it's a safe bet with these things bit you're right, having seen the system running now, all 3 phases operate on different loads all the time. I'm sure there's a good reason why they recommend it, but I agree with what you're saying totally.

      @@TheKilowattChallenge well as long there is shunt and cerbo and/or there is "single source of Voltage and Current" then DC cabling doesn't matter for simple (1 inverter charger per phase) setup. Cable lenght must be same (for same polarity i.e. same lengths of all positive and same lengths of negatives) in these cases: - parallel connection of batteries: for example connecting 4 units of pylontechs to Lynx - parallel connection of inverters: for example having 2 Multiplus per one phase - then the two multipluses has to have "identical wiring resistance".

    70mm2 is not a lot .... it even seems a little small to me, you would be able to draw 300A from batteries, 70mm2 is for 200A => 3% lose for a 6m cable.

    • @TheKilowattChallenge
      @TheKilowattChallenge Před rokem

      It's certainly the minimum for my setup :-) I've been running them for a while and they're working great, each cable is less than a meter long so the resistance is as low as it could ever be for that cable etc. You're right to highlight it though, but it's stated in the manual as being the correct diameter for this equipment.

  • @davidniquot6423

    Your cables to the bussbar from the inverter can't be the same length .. why ? Cause if yuo look closely, the busbar length is not the same for each inverter. The millivolts you see between those 2 solar controlelrs may just be disrepency between sensors... specially with this battery where you certainly tried a very small Amperage. On a 16mm2 cable, on 1m with 1A current the voltage drop is 0.005%, with 50A... would be 0.26%, Same lenght will ensure that each charge controllers see the same voltage.... meaning it would change things at top charge...

    Pretty crazy that half a meter difference in wire, even of that heavy gauge, can make a noticeable difference in the resting voltage readings. And as you said, under load that 30mV value will greatly increase. You don't want your chargers fighting over voltages, or shutting down early because one reads a higher voltage than another, and then the other charger has to work a lot harder for the remainder. Or worse, the charger starts to cycle on/off as the battery voltage fluctuates (though, this shouldn't happen if the trigger settings are far enough apart) And then there's the inverters, possibly cycling due to voltage drops 🙄 So much to consider!!

      With zero load the voltage difference will be zero, regardless of the cable size, but under load the voltage drop will of course increase. Unfortunately, cable length is the least of your worries because crimp quality can make more of a difference. So be sure to actually measure the resistance of each cable assembly using a suitable measuring device.

    I am installing 43 x 470W panels providing a 20kW PV array but am not yet decided on the best path for DC charging. Long strings would be more simple to install and I could use the same RS48/6000 and RS550/200TR unit but the cost of these 2 inverters is €4000 If I organise the strings with some paralell and series connections I could use 4 smaller Solar Smart chargers. Specifically a 150/70, plus 250/70 plus 2 x 250/100TR. There is a bit more wiring but these 4 MPPTs only cost €2500. Advantages I am thinking are the lower start up Voltage and if a unit does go wrong, its easier to replace with the 4 small units. In addition for 2 of my larger panel strings, they are on a flat roof so I would oversize the panel array by 130% vs the MPPT to get a better conversion throughout the day (these arrays due to location will never deliver peak power) Basically I am wondering if there is a real big advantage in spending the higher amount of cash and using the 2 RS Inverters? As you have installed these... would appreciate your thoughts as I am sure you had same discussions and considerations Any comments or thoughts from contributors are welcome

    • @TheKilowattChallenge
      @TheKilowattChallenge Před rokem

      Hi Mark, yeah I spent weeks thinking about this as well. In the end I went for the bigger chargers because I was warned about over volting the strings by a couple of victron users. Your 130% over spec worries me, I to have sub optimal conditions but on several occasions my chargers have been able to charger at over 1kw of the rated panels because they were cold. The cold weather increases the voltage quite a lot, its worth googling and may cause your chargers to shut down periodically. Have you looked at the victron PV array calculator? It's bang on correct and well worth putting your faith into it.

    • @markparsons5677
      @markparsons5677 Před rokem

      @@TheKilowattChallenge I ran all of my calculations via the Victron calculator and these were the recommended options. The largest of my roof arrays 32 x 470W as with my other arrays can be wired in different ways depening what you want to achieve. If I run 4S4P the voltage is lower and each array fits with an MPPT 250/100 (800€ each). If I arranged the panels in 4 strings each with 8 panels in series, obviously much higher voltage / string so a smidge lower loss (but as I only have 7 - 8 meter of 6mm MC4 its negligible) and Victron calculator suggested RS450/200TP costing €2100. Similar situation for other arrays, and in total with MPPTs its saving 1400€ and in my mind I have to answer the question of benefit vs cost. Obviously a lot more cables with 4 x MPPTs but equally 1400€ is a lot to pay for improved communication ... so I was looking for other reasons to go with the RS units. Its a hefty premium to reduce reduce installation footprint but obviously this is a major consideration for some. As you obviously thought a lot about this I was wondering what finally swung the decision!

    I've got a Multiplus-II 48/5000/70-50 and although it is indeed 30Kg, it isn't too bad to lift once you realise that it's extremely top heavy. I'd guess that 80% of the weight is at the top half which makes it tricky to handle initially. Not sure I would want to leave it hanging from a single screw though and I don't understand why you wouldn't just fit the brackets properly and remove the templates before starting to hang the units. Oh, and now you've got to take them back off the wall after marking the lower two fixings and drill and install plugs in the wall. 😅 Anyway, interesting to see your project moving forward. Thanks.
