Thats some Hardwork blacksmithing,
This video was riveting to watch
So, how do you rivet those rings that form the links. You can't rivet them before they hold the riveted links together, right?
is there any place I can buy those tools?
was ne arbeit da bleib ich doch beim messer machen xD
1:40 shit i literal felt a sharp cut-like pain
Riveted chainmail has to be the most MONOTONOUS form of chainmail, which is the most monotonous thing I've ever done.
I'm assuming that the rings that hold the riveted rings together are also riveted afterwards? Also how did that overlap happen? Was the wire cut in a specific way?
Beautiful.
I wear my chainmail as a weighted shirt. I'm hoping to make a heavier shirt than I currently have
Very interesting video. I hope you'll make some more soon. Have you ever investigated how links might be 'fire welded'? I also wonder if wrought iron mail was ever case hardened, either by heating with powdered charcoal in a sealed container, or simply quenching it in oil.
Maille from flat rings is stiffer than from round rings. At the very least, getting in and out is harder for that reason. You might even have to increase the circumference in some places to make it more flexible again. That of course would mean more effort and more weight. Also, completely flat rings can have sharp edges and that will do something with the materials touching the maille. E.g. a coat of plates or brigandine, with their plates being inside and directly in contact with the maille, will constantly be scrubbed by the maille (especially with wedge rivets). I believe for that reason they had another layer of fabric between the maille and the coat of plates. In some epitaphs, you can see that covering the armpits, like a sleeveless shirt that is looking a bit from underneath the coat of plates.
Hey. Sorry for the comment on the old video. But how are tye solid rings (the ones without rivets) made?
Dose this make stronger armor than wire mail?
This really adds depth to mail In terms of historical combat many have noted piercing as a weakness of mail With rivited mail getting firmer into the picture and this it adds the depth of poorer fighters buying thinner and wider links while the richer bought the smaller and slightly thicker stuff, probably of a higher quality
My guess was about 200 for that piece that you asked us to guess. Not a bad guess considering I do nothing with chainmail lol
Nice but that steel wont add any protection. too soft. so why even bother spending 100ds of days completing it?
what is the proper names for riveting tongs? this tool looks handy.
2:22 lmao that one’s gone forever
Ive seen a drawing of "punch guide/block" tool that accepts two punches: one to make the middle hole then one to punch out the ring using the hole as a guide. No clue if they used a tool like that in that area, but that would help with consistency and prevent the need to grind for hours.
"Yeah, i could automate that"
What was that a 6 in 1 pattern 😳 looks good
This is wonderful, thank you!
a rectangular section with the same area of a round section has a greater Wx so it should be more difficult to open a flat ring.
How did they produce large quantities of chainmail in the middle ages.
This taught me more about how to make my own gold wire than any jewelry channel
making it with zipties is way, way quicker.
this might be years late. (maybe centuries) but why not use a spectrum of ring sizes/wire-thickness based on the armor requirements. making the chest of smaller/thicker rings to protect you vital organs and the arms with larger thinner wider to reduce weight and improve mobility of the arms?
Yeah, some historic mail shirts feature exactly that.
I was wondering, how effective would the chainmail be if the individual chains were welded instead of riveted? Would it be possible to do with a modern welder or would it be too finicky?
Неожиданно вместо брутального кузнеца с кривым глазом и отбитыми черными ногтями на последних кадрах милый парень с добрым взглядом :-)
how thick is that dorn? im looking for one that is 1mm thick
is there going to be another chainmail Olympics?
Could be, maybe every couple years. Feel free to like this comment to show interest.
@@Ironskin I would also like to see other categories outside of historical, such as those using modern alloys or patterns found outside of western Europe. I feel it could give insight into why European 4 in 1 was so popular for so long.
Fucking amazing dude!

He's making it old school. I haven't done it in a while but when I did I used a long bolt of the diameter I wanted the links to be. Cut off the head and cut a short slot in the other end. Chuck the steel bolt into a drill then feed the wire through two pieces of wood held together in a vice (for tension). Once you have a bunch of these wire springs made use some good cutters to cut them into rings. Braid the links into chainmail. I never bothered to weld the chainmail links and would occasionally have to replace missing links, but it was never a big deal. If you wanted to weld them I'd use a small welder to tack the links closed...easy peasy.
This is funny me and my brother where talking about this the other day so back in the day romans made a suit of bronze armor that was lined with cork like the stuff from wine bottles anyways the cork lined armor did 2 things number one it acted as padding to absorb blows and trama and number 2 it helped them float and was used by a group of roman soldiers which was like there version of the special forces which used it to cross a river at night time and infiltrate an enemy stronghold before they concerted it as they killed everyone that was sleeping but yeah it was a leather and cork armor that had chain mail and brass breast plate for the cheast sadly the only remaining museum pieces with the cork are beaten up and missing almost everything
How those creator chainmail made by handmade for 1000 armies even more maybe 100.000 armies
Onde compro os arames
Can you say “pain in the ass”?
I've been attempting to make chainmail for 3 days. It's definitely going to be a long road to get to this skill level. I've probably messed up a mile of wire already.
Chain mail is like a panzer tank.
Круто! Спасибо большое.
Were the rivets made from the same wire? You just squeeze them together with the pliers?
LOL, no! That is completely false!
Man no way some one chose to do this over just making a chest plate. This mustve took forever to do
Oh, I thought these were going to be artisinal, hand-forged soda can rings, but chainmail is also pretty cool.
I knew it was chainmail!!! I love this so much.
Cheerful blacksmith! It would be better if he showed where the alloy steel wire in the forge comes from. It is obvious that the wire was not forged and drawn from bog iron.
How did they make the wire? Not as historic as you say
This may sound like a stupid question but to make 8mm interior diameter rings the mandrel needs to be 8mm diameter right?
