Varg is a living contradiction who seems to rewrite some elements of his past to suit his current narrative. A lot of people do that, not only him. He inherited a platform since that infamous murder and he's taking advantage off it now, in a very amateurish way. Remember that he spent the first decade of his adult life in prison and that it screwed a lot of the "usual adulthood opportunities" for him. He has problems with the modern world but he's actually doing well considering his past and if we can trust his claims in his latest book (survivalist years).

I wrote to Varg (would sign off Kristian or Count Grishnackh) for a while at the tail end of his time in Old Funeral/formation of Burzum. I bought the Old Funeral EP from him and some bits and pieces. He told me that he no longer was a member of Old Funeral, as they were a bunch of maggot poseurs (edited as was against YT guidelines, but it rhymes with maggot) . Kind of got fed up with the constant negativity, so stopped writing. I knew Lee Barrett of Candlelight Records pretty well, and Burzum was in negotiations for a record deal. Before the news broke of Euronymous's murder, Varg phoned Lee that morning and was laughing telling Lee that Euronymous was dead, with details.

The Norwegian black metal scene of the late 80’s/early 90’s fascinates me. I’m a fan of many of the bands, including Burzum. What I think is most interesting, is it seems the scene was made up of a lot of angry, disenfranchised young men that couldn’t see a place for themselves in Norwegian society at the time. Often, an adult or group of adults will find young men like that, radicalise them, and then exploit them to fulfil their own ambitions for power or revenge. It seems in this situation, the guys helped to radicalise each other and then Euronymous and Varg both tried to become the leader, which resulted in Varg eliminating Euronymous. I have not read this book, but I’ve seen lots of videos and read interviews from Varg, Fenriz and other guys from the scene talking about it. I think I can answer some of the questions you asked in the video: 1. Varg respects Fenriz as an artist that refused to compromise on his artist vision and was willing to upset people for not being ‘true’ death metal/black metal. 2. Varg has said that Euronymous bullied the guys in Darkthrone and Dead. Varg has also talked about spending part of his childhood in Iraq and that he was bullied there. I imagine bullying may be another reason Varg hated Euronymous and felt a connection with Fenriz. 3. It seems almost everyone in the scene hated each other, which is why some of the bands distanced themselves from the scene. 4. I think Varg talks about Euronymous so much to distract people from the other things he did. You noticed that he never insults Fenriz. Have you also noticed that Varg will talk all day about Euronymous and murdering him, but he has always denied telling the journalist about who was responsible for the church burnings in Norway? A lot of the guys from the scene seem to hate Varg more for speaking to the journalist than for killing Euronymous. While I obviously don’t condone what Varg did, it bothers me that many people use him as the scapegoat for all the shit other members of the scene said/did at the time and have said since then. Loads of people that say Varg killed Euronymous in cold blood like a coward, were the first people to buy tickets to see Emperor when Faust got released from prison and rejoined the band. There is a lot of hypocrisy and wilful ignorance when it comes to the negative side of black metal. That is why there is still a stigma around black metal today. It’s a shame, because so much of the music has nothing to do with far-right extremism, but too many people refuse to separate the two.

How can someone not like Fenriz? Dude is a riot and genuine. If you think Vargs hatred for Euronymous is bad, Jim Cornettes hatred for Vince Russo is worse.

To me it is rather sad that we can't get any more neutral books from that time. Obviously there were a lot of antics in the scene at the time, but I think that the murder was such a heinous thing that people have landed in two camps, each camp insisting that their guy was in the right. This in turn means that they have to tar the other guy with a blacker brush. Personally I think both Øystein and Varg would be intolerable to hang out with at that time if you were not licking their boots well enough. I have read a few books from the other side, I might consider getting the Varg-books just to see what he writes and kind of sift through it to find the kernels of truth...

Not defending anyone. But an important detail. A rumor that Euronymous spread. Was. He killed Pelle Ohlin. Euronymous. Euronymous was the oldest in the circle. Varg was a kid compared to Euronymous. Pelle actually died. So who wouldn’t believe a threat like that?
