Ilan Stavans’ translations of Pablo Neruda’s Odes (2006) are celebrated for reinventing the 20th-century Chilean poet’s rhythms. How do translators make a classi...

I really enjoyed this video and truly believe we all need to be listening to Dr. Stanislas Dehaene and Dr. Mark Seidenberg when it comes to beginning reading instruction. I'm not sure if it's in this video or another one, where Dehaene talks about all words being able to read phonetically. I'm attaching a link to a video I've created of my daughter's journey becoming a proficient reader. The video is her journey reading phonetically-controlled books. She has not been given a single word to memorise. She reads all words phonetically by blending the sounds from left to right, even words that many people think cannot be read in this way. czcams.com/video/01NPoc7zAGM/video.html

Everyday we encounter more evil, manipulative and controlling people....as a teacher and father, I fear for the unaware. A former student's husband just contacted me, infoming me she just got "sucked in" by scientology and left him.....maried only two years. She's in the blue building in LA now, all info controlled, etc etc. Looks like scientology is starting to crumble simply from truth escaping due to internet: She will rue the day she did this.

I just discovered Sold a Story. It’s really eye opening. No wonder kids get to high school and don’t read well. Let alone comprehension! Poor kids. And they feel dumb. They don’t know it’s a systemic failure. Parents don’t have this information so they can’t advocate for their kids.

22:26 … My favorite (read: pet peeve) “thought terminating cliche” is “hater.” When I hear it I’m always stuck wondering why it’s said, who’s saying it and who they’re directing it toward. It always just felt like a coping mechanism or as a sort of excuse. The term “thought terminating cliche” I think sums it up nicely. Thank you for teaching me that.

Maureen, I have read your book "So We Read On" , and comments by Matthew Bruccoli. These have been so helpful in adding enjoyment to reading Gatsby again, and again. I confess that I had never read this book until 1979, ten years after graduating high school. If it had been assigned, I am sure I would have paged through this and made my report from that, probably receiving a D or generous C grade. I happened to find this book at my mother's home and read the first couple of sentences. I took it home and continued reading a few pages after work each night until I came to the mention of Louisville, and Camp Taylor. These drew my interest because I live in Louisville and as a youngster played football at Camp Taylor park. After completing my reading of the novel I always felt closer to the book when passing Camp Taylor, which is completely different from Fitzgerald's time here. It has stayed in my thoughts since my first reading it 44 years ago. I have tried to interest my wife in the book but she only seemed drawn to Robert Redford's portraying Gatsby in the movie. My apologies for going on and on. I do want to thank you for your enthusiasm on Fitzgerald's genius. His writing, especially with this masterpiece which amazes me more and more.

The Earth is cooler with the atmos/GHGs/albedo not warmer. To perform as advertised the GHGs require “extra” energy upwelling from the surface radiating as a black body. (czcams.com/video/0Jijw7-YG-U/video.html) The kinetic heat transfer processes of the contiguous atmos molecules render that scenario impossible. No greenhouse effect, no GHG warming, no man/CO2 driven climate change or Gorebal warming.
