    I'm wondering about the two conventional fuses that shunt the pyro fuse. (You removed them, and they're sitting in your round red tray of parts on the right.) My guess is that when the pyro fuse opens, the current is redirected to these two smaller fuses, which immediately blow and quench the arc. This is probably cheaper and easier than trying to quench the arc from the pyrofuse's own conductor. In mine they were each rated to break 100 kA. Fuses of this type are usually filled with a sand, probably silica (silicon dioxide) or magnesium oxide, to promote arc cooling and quenching.

There were the bumper meets the fender you will see the cap with 3 screws. When that's of you will see the connector. Take it off and extract the pin with a needle or a thin sharp something. Push on the blank metal in the connector and you can pull out the little pin with the wire. Tape it and re assemble everything. I took me approximately 30 min.

    Seems I forgot to mention what was wrong. A couple of the terminals in the connector at the start of the video were not making good contact. Perhaps someone went in with multimeter probes too aggressively trying to diagnose the OTHER problem. The other problem was poorly fitted connector in the onboard charger's HVIL circuit. It was in place but not pushed down. Probably was like that from factory-I had to break the 'warranty void' stickers to get in! Hence this car having so few kms on it, it was likely a lemon from the start. Now its not a lemon but because it was flooded it remains a lemon in the eyes of the law. Life's a funny old thing...

I've often considered turning my 2008 Highlander Limited (electric AWD) into an EV if the ICE ever gives us problems... though at 310k miles now, no smoke and burns zero oil... it might not ever die! I think they're lithium metal primary (nonrechargeable) batteries. Two in series would give roughly the voltage he sees across the pyro initiator plug when the unit detected an overcurrent. These apparently reach their shelf life after 8-9 years and require an overly expensive fuse replacement.

    You wonder how the diode traps the spikes in the wrong direction - The coil first tries to keep the current going in the direction it has built up and the voltage accross it collapses and reverses as it tries to do so, with a voltage proportional to the rate of current change. If there is no diode, this voltage charges the capacitance of the winding and any capacitance of the surrounding wires, amd as the capacitor charges to maximum, the coil current falls to zero. But then the capacitor discharges, building up current the other way in the inductor... And rather as a spring (capacitor) and a weight ( inductor), what you actually get is a 'twang' of oscillation of both positive and negative that dies away as energy slops about between poetntial energy (voltage on capacitance) and kinetic energy (current flowing in incuctance). The scope is not zoomed in enough to do it justice. But if you take all the energy out of the systemn on the first half cycle with the diode, there is no charged capacitor to drive the next reversal, so it all stops at half to 3/4 of a volt, which is the diode turn-on voltage. You also often see a series resistor and a capacitor to dampen the oscillations when you do not have a DC system and a diode would not do on AC mains.

  • @namenotshown9277
    @namenotshown9277 Před 8 měsíci

    74 P that means there is no individual cell monitoring, those 74cells cannot be distinguished from each other, they are basically treated as one cell, at the moment there is no way around that, no ev maker has solved that issue. 74 divide 444 cells means less than 20% of the pack is monitored in reality......interesting is it not. And yes it is a work of art.

    • @RaglansElectricBaboon
      @RaglansElectricBaboon Před 8 měsíci

      Yes, because they are connected in parallel they are effectively 'one big cell' that just happens to be spread out into 74 separate containers. They will behave identically so they don't need individual monitoring. What this method has over something like the Leaf pouch cells or the 'blade batteries' is that if there is a fault in one of the cells you don't lose the whole series. Its connector acts as a fuse, burns out and disconnects the problem cell from the rest of the cells. So you lose 1/74th of your capacity rather than all of it. You almost certainly avoid a fire too. Yes, it is a work of art.

    • @namenotshown9277
      @namenotshown9277 Před 8 měsíci

      yes a work of art, but what about if a cell fails and it doesn't burn out the thin fuse wire? Cells do fail for varous reasons and few involve an overcurrent event. Lets say a cell gets high resistance for whatever reason, lets say the SEI layer gets thick rather quickly and internal resistance goes up, that cell will tend to deliver less amps and will get hotter during charge. My point is all those cells in parallel are pretty much unmonotored, apart from knowing the total voltage and additive internal resistance.........my point is there is no inidvidual cell monitoring, alot of people say these packs are monitored at a cell leve but they are not. Lets say this cell gets very high resistance and during charging or discharging gets hot enough to catch fire, how will you know it is going to happen? @@RaglansElectricBaboon

It's not covered by the battery warranty apparently. Just quoted £287.28 to replace it but at least it will be replaced with the newer generation that doesn't have a battery and instead draws power from the traction battery through the fuse itself.
