This is very sad. A long time ago - in the 80s some friends and I went to the Portuguese Settlement and we enjoyed ourselves. I believe it was San Pedro's Day and there was fireworks and dancing and it was so lively. Then I went again last year and it was like deserted - not on San Pedro's day but just the opposite of my first visit. I don't know why but I felt very sad. On another visit about 5 years ago a friend and I went to have dinner there and there was a lot of food and it was delicious. Again, compared to my latest trip, I did not see the stalls but just one place that sold Food and drinks. I believe it was called Monteiro's but I'm not sure. The people in the settlement were VERY FRIENDLY and ACCOODATING. I loved it there as it is like a little place where you could go to unwind. I went there in the afternoon so I don't know about the night life - if it is still bustling with people and food stalls especially during festivals. Isn't the Portuguese Settlement a U.N Heritage place ? If so, something should be done by the government to maintain the place but instead I saw an unsightly building - Lim Kok Wing University ! How on earth did that guy get the permit to build a University there ? That's the price the settlement pays for corruption. But what is the saddest part of it is this : Even Portuguese at high levels in the government have forgotten their roots and did not do anything to help. So insignificant in campus but so disgustingly arrogant when they are in a Ministry. I was talking to a fisherman and he and the people did not want talk about these Portuguese at high level government places - they were quite fed-up and learned that such people forget everything when they are high up - they are busy mingling with other high level people who are all chasing after titles. The people told me where that official lived and the house was still there ALONG WITH THE SIBLINGS. I definitely plan to drive to the settlement again soon. SO GENUINELY FRIENDLY AND HUMBLE - but sadly they become damn arrogant once they reach a certain position in some Ministry. Kacang lupakan kulit ? I detest such hypocrites ! I sincerely hope that the Portuguese Settlement will revert to its glory days - CHRIST the REDEEMER will help all of you my friends.
