(goku got lucky and literally got the brainwashing "hit" out of his head at a young age in an accident, but vegeta had to work through his trauma and pride, literally undo everything he had learned as a saiyan to learn how to communicate, live, and even LOVE on earth. arguably, because he worked through his trauma, unlike goku, he is more intelligent, socially aware and emotionally intelligent than goku is usually presented as being. especially as the PRINCE of the saiyans, he was already furious his father allowed freiza to rule them. but this is exactly why, his pride and anger, he didn't achieve super saiyan before goku. he was more attatched to his saiyan lineage, pride and traditions, for obvious reasons, and it's hard to realise that even a mighty warrior race can be the galactic slaves of a tyrant. who forces them to destroy entire planets for profit, this cognitive dissonance that vegeta struggled to reconcile, was the blindness that made him struggle to achieve super saiyan. it was only after a long-time of training on his own, that vegeta reflected for long enough to understand and achieve super saiyan himself, in doing so, he also overcame his trauma, and not only became able to love, but wanted to. he chose to live on earth and be with bulma. to have a family. to be a part of the group. as edgy as he acts. he still chose to be with them after overcoming his saiyan trauma. and that is what matters.)

Before anyone mentions DBZA: Rule of funny. I LOVE this version of Goku, being a good dad, but I do fully agree that him being accidentally negligent is funny. They also went back to correct it near the end, and even with the Dragon Shortz. It's a parody, it's not canon. Are there things they do better than the canon? Yes. TLDR: "Don't fuck with Dragon Ball fans, we don't watch our own show." (Also: I do still think that Piccolo is "family" to Gohan. He's like an older brother to Goku, he's uncle piccolo.)

It isn't that Goku didn't love Gohan, people fail to understand their relationship. It's clear they loved each other a lot and when he was young, Gohan *did* want to follow in his dad's footsteps. Remember at the start of the Android saga he willingly chooses to help the Z fighters and even hid his armor so Chi Chi wouldn't throw it away or confiscate it. The key thing that people forget is that *Goku thought Gohan had the same drive for fighting and getting stronger that he did.* That's where he messed up. Gohan fought to protect, he didn't fight to test his limits. If he could avoid risking his life and getting hurt he would take that option, but he would prefer not to. Whereas Goku is very much down to risk his. Not to mention Gohan looks up to his father a lot and wants to live up to his legacy. People say "Piccolo was his real dad" but that's not even true. Keep in mind this Piccolo, biologically, is only 5 years old. Yes, he was technically reincarnated but this newer Piccolo is younger and more open to others. Piccolo isn't Gohan's second dad, he's his first ever friend and vice versa. Piccolo eben says it himself in the Cell Games - "You were the first one to show me what it was like to have a friend." So when Piccolo snaps at Goku, it isn't Gohan's "real dad" getting mad at his "deadbeat dad," it's his *best friend* criticizing Goku for failing to understand Gohan's personality when even Android 16 had figured it out.
