Follow the evolution of a 2020 Wrangler JLU for off-roading, outdoors, DIY & more. My hard earned cash pays for my Jeep hobby and I would like to pass on some of the bits of knowledge I pick up along the way. SSO is a place I can share solutions to make Jeep life better. Even if you don’t have a Jeep, my content will have an off-road theme that will apply to whatever you drive. I’ll be sharing how-to videos from add-ons to basic maintenance and trail videos. I’m having fun with this and who knows where this will go.

A rainy day in the woods is better than a sunny day at work! Gotta love old NC 105!
@@oldmanoldtruck it is and the kids loved it! We feel blessed to have things like this an hour from home. Thanks for watching!
Well played, brother!
happy 4 to you love the music hopefully you have fun 4 liltle buddy
I hit this trail last weekend and that spot in the middle is even worse than in this video now. I made it in my stock JTR but it was hairy, minimal scrapping, I dare say a stock jeep without lockers would struggle a lot in the trails current state. Traction boards would have helped me bridge some of those deeper ruts.
@@isaacvaughn1110 Good to know. It has definitely degraded quickly with the rain we’ve had.
@@SecretSquirrelOffroad I’m fairly new to off roading, do these trails get some sort of maintence done to them or is it just the good hearted people that use them that try to get them maintained? I do love and use the tread lightly mindset. Its heart breaking to see a trail get abused and ultimately shut down
@@isaacvaughn1110 these trails generally don’t get any maintenance. The risk of closure is real. I pick up about a case of beer cans each time I run that trail.
@@SecretSquirrelOffroad that’s awful, keep up the videos man! I appreciate it, would love to do a ride sometime.
@@isaacvaughn1110 thank you. I’m in the Asheville area. It would be good to get a ride organized.
Looking clean. Need to find some mud now. 🤣
Definitely. The ceramic stuff definitely makes it easier to clean. Saves time for sure & people can call it a mall crawler. I know it’s coming… I’ve been hit with the you don’t wheel if you don’t like to trash your stuff logic. To each their own.
@@SecretSquirrelOffroad Nothing wrong with keeping your rig looking good. I don’t terrorize it on purpose (well maybe 🤷♂), but the Beast is like a bull in the china shop going down the trails. 😬Definitely getting plenty of pinstripes and other scrapes but having fun wheeling.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
why put a slider to protect yourself from scraping if buy putting the slider it makes you more likely to scrape. oof.
bro, this thing is almost 200 bucks for a piece of metal. My lifted jeep TJ (2 doors) on 33 inch tires, doesnt really need this, and I never scraped my rear hitch receiver. This thing could maybe useful on some rigs, but such a rig maybe shouldnt be doing as much off roading if scraping the rear is an issue.
I get it. Between your lift and more forgiving departure angle your setup is a lot less likely to be an issue. For me, something like this made sense and prevented some unexpected damage before I spend considerably more $ on lift and larger tires. I’m taking my time building my ride. Thanks for watching.
I think I am going to get one of these with the 2.5” to 2” sleeve for the Red Beast. Makes sense.
Yeah probably a good idea for a gladiator
I thought about it while watching a Tacoma dredge the trail in front of me. That bumper was flexing like crazy. Thanks for watching!
I have the Reno Hitch Slider verison on my JT and love it, plus its half the price roughly.
Good to have options. Thanks for watching!
I just found your channel and subscribed. Hop8ng to learn some things.
Welcome & thanks for watching!
Nice setup.
Thanks. Enjoyed your Windrock videos btw.
@@SecretSquirrelOffroad Thanks for watching. 😀
Just watched. Would love to do this trail. Do you have GPS coordinates. We've done the GOAT trail and the Hurricane Trail. Do you schedule rides? We are in Belmont, NC but come the area often
Here are the coordinates and a Gaia link to the start of the Shelton Laurel Trail. It is a short ride about halfway between Goat trail and Hurricane Creek. WNC Jeepers, Hendersonville & Asheville Jeep Clubs post pretty regular trail rides out there. I have t scheduled many rides myself. 35.67761, -82.98920 www.gaiagps.com/map/?loc=17.0000/-82.9892/35.6776&layer=Satellite,GaiaTopoRasterFeet
Those gps coordinates are from Gaia and not my actual device.
Is this a stock friendly trail...
@@thedavieducker1265 Yes. My JL is stock aside from 33’s.
I-40 (from Asheville) to Fines Creek rd then left onto Shelton Laurel. Fun warm-up trail before hurricane creek or old buzzards roast (The goat trail). You can exit on either side of i-40 at the end. It's few miles before the rest stop and Hurricane Creek coming from Asheville. I usually hit Shelton then Hurricane Creek then the goat trail for a fun long day. Great video thanks for sharing.
If I just hit the button every time to turn off the stop/start button when I turn on the vehicle, do i have anything to worry about regarding the aux battery going dead?
Not aside from normal battery life of the aux battery. The drawback to the aux battery in my opinion is when it goes dead it will take the main down with it in many cases. I didn’t like that variable in the electrical system.
@@SecretSquirrelOffroad , thank you. I plan on keep hitting the button in my 2023 Gladiator to turn off the start/stop feature and keep a close eye/ear if I have any trouble starting the vehicle regarding the regular battery. I purchased my Gladiator used with less than 13,000 miles and purchased an extended warranty to 75,000 miles hoping to avoid any issues or out of pocket expenses for the aux battery.
Good plan. Thanks for watching!
Yes you do, the aux battery is basically a separate issue from the auto stop start, but they are inter-related. The aux batteries are really low quality, I have had them die for no reason in less than 2 years. When they die, they sap power from the main battery which can ruin it to a point where it can't be re-charged, and the jeep won't start. Best bet is to move the aux battery (there are 4-5 different methods for achieving this) and then use a programmer like in this video or a tazer to disable Auto stop/start.
Do you mind sharing where this trail is?
Western North Carolina, west of Ashevile near the NC/TN state line off I-40. Directions are in the video description. Thanks for watching!
Getting those plugs in and out is a bitch!
No doubt! If you ever have to get to them again, like use an OBD programmer, do yourself a favor and get a set of these- Z Automotive Secure Gateway cable extension- amzn.to/3WzkIKT (Amazon Affiliate Link).

@@SecretSquirrelOffroad I want to thank you for your video, after spending, no joke, over an hour last night unsuccessfully trying to get the original plugs in the SGW, I installed the ZAutomotive Extender tonight in 10 minutes! You saved my sanity and many many curse words! Now I can easily unmarry the Tazer and go to the dealer for service! Thanks man!
Glad it helped. That’s one of the reasons I started this channel. The aim was to share what I learn either from pouring over forums or just digging into the issue. I’m learning as I go, why not share? This job was more frustrating than getting the battery into an AJT key fob. Love them, but not looking forward to battery changes. Thanks for watching!
Extra Class amateur radio dude here. You will be fine with the excess coax coiled, but as you said you will get a slight increase in performance if you were to cut the excess out and install a connector yourself.
Thanks!
? How is it working ? Is the small battery still being use ( Is it only when you first start the jeep Thanks for the info
The small battery (aux) is no longer in the Jeep. No problems after about one year. I swapped an H7 battery for the main for some extra battery power. There is a video up on my channel about that as well. The Smart Stop System has been flawless. Thanks for watching!
eTorque...No aux battery , No problems.
Thanks for watching!

Sorry about the audio level inconsistency. New mic vs old mic.
Start/stop is the biggest asshole move by Jeep, IMO. I did the auxiliary battery delete which I thought would cure it. I did it for 2 reasons, actually - one, it was acting like a parasite and draining my main battery constantly and two, to get rid of the stop/start feature. While it did help in the main battery department, it did nothing for the stop/start. I think I’m going to go this route. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
My Aux went down in the middle of an obstacle off-road. I bought an H7 battery on the drive home, deleted aux and never looked back. If you like the start stop system, just add JScan for a lot of functions on a taser for less $. Thanks for watching and yours is a great channel btw! Subbed.
@@SecretSquirrelOffroad Thanks, man! Yeah, I was on a steep hill climb here in SoCal and I had to come to a complete stop and the start/stop kicked in and then my truck wouldn’t start! Hahahahaha! In the middle of a climb! 😳 Definitely gonna do this!
i saved up a bunch of crown bags and my wife made a beautiful quilt out of them!
Hah i have a crown bag full of change on my counter right now
Love it. I dumped change out of that one because a new crown bag didn’t cut it. Now if people would stop asking me why I keep quarters in an old 35mm film canister…
When I was real young I thought the Crown Royal bags meant treasure inside. Because that was all I ever saw in them! Mostly at my grumpa's house 😅
Don’t worry it’s a Jeep! 😂
At least I don’t have IFS. lol.
It was a stupid hard bonk. Luckily I didn’t break something. Driver’s rear wheel was in the air.
Thanks! I’ll be better prepared for the next one I have plenty of time…
