Embrace equity in 2023 to overcome imposter syndrome
zhlédnutí 2,7KPřed rokem
If you want to #EmbraceEquity that means advocating not just for yourself, but for others who too often get left behind. These are people like me, maybe you, who can sometimes feel imposter syndrome at work. Imposter syndrome may be normal, but why exactly? Why does this happen to professionals; particularly the type I work with - high achieving women in male-dominated fields.

In my due diligence (as most of my coaching clients do!) to prepare for the short interview, I did with Kaye Adams on BBC Radio Scotland, I searched beyond the attention-grabbing headline of ‘Bluffing is a Sign you are Clever’. My first mentor - I found his anonymized profile via an internal site for these things. I would have never picked him if I had known him in real life first. He was a good mentor, though, and I think, people who are quite different from me in personality (those I don't feel friendly with) have worked out as much better colleagues, mentors, etc. I love to just talk about all different things in life, spout my opinions, and daydream - all this gets in the way of professional work, IMO.

Now management see it all coming together, they have made sure they are the ones presenting it to the project director, and not us! The ones who developed it all aren’t invited! I've used the Assisted Living Industry for the last 7 years to better to learn more about dementia as an Activities Director. My initial focus was to better understand how to help my mom navigate symptoms at home. I've been her primary caregiver since 2008. After 3 months, I knew I was teaching more than I was learning. Now I'm on the job search again, and I really want to open up a Wellness Clinic in my parents home town where undeserved families can get counseling, seniors can congregate and folks can talk out issues to maintain better mental health.

When I’ve tried this, my boss then just avoided giving feedback and using my ambition as a carrot to get me to work harder in my current position… I’m now of the opinion that you can’t change the way certain bosses view you. They set you in a box early on and you’ll be stuck there until you figure it out and leave.

Man here, near the top of my field. I am willing to mentor men, and I'm willing to train mixed groups of men and women. I will never, ever mentor a female in a private setting. In this environment, it's like handing her a loaded gun and politely asking her not to shoot me with it, even though she'd never get punished for pointing it at me and pulling the trigger. It's amazing to me that a video like this can even exist.

I think people have been pigeon-holed into gender slots, and it’s affecting all our lives, and it’s wrong. We are not our genders, we are ducking people.

I’m always finding ways to have witnesses and coworkers who know what I’m doing. Once only boss stole it but I revenged in a smart way: “I invited him on a meeting to present my work to the rest of stakeholders.” And, I thanked him for the opportunity he gave me as my boss for this project. In this way I showed respect for his position and I put myself as the author of project. Now I’m facing what you said: “A new coworker is stealing from other older colleague a work but with support of his manager. “ Terrible, especially for this he is recognized and awarded in the company, even though he doesn’t have knowledge. Pathetic but what to do! When he is supported by superiors.
