Nostalgia brought me back but I am learning and doing things I would never imagine as a kid. It's like a new game. Especially with my Ironman.

i found runescape through moritanya lock or tileman era settled... like... that was maybe 4 years ago. n i played runescape 3 for a while too. like yeah. osrs is fun. lol just cuz. i play it for free on mobile 😂

I am a pretty serious PoE player. The way I make money in game, is by rushing people's characters trough the campaign (I run it with them with all the buffs, with the fastest nuke builds, and by giving items (like speed boots) to my clients) Its kind of funny to hear the "Pay to skip the campaign" when that is literally what people pay me to do lol. To be fair, its too expensive for a player that hasnt run the campign by themselves at least once to afford)

In poe one theres loot filters that preety much everyone uses. I imagine using those would have fixed your loot issues....... In poe one, if u dont use loot filters, in end game, your game will just crash lmao

I think nostalgia is only a reason because the game is really good and it struck a big cord with alot of people, but because its such a good game people have stayed with the game and new players have come as youve said. Focusing on this nostalgia angle is reductive and does not really represent nostalgia as a selling a point. He just had his point that he wanted to make in his head and was not open at all to your explanations haha

I think osrs is just so unique experience that it needs to be played in order to understand the game. You can only understand so much with just talking shit. If I was a child who played the original rs and was sent to osrs I would not understand 90% of the content.

I never understood your stance that RuneScape isn’t popular because of nostalgia. As a vet player you are wrong.. most people voted and wanted old RuneScape back for the nostalgic piece of the state it was at when it was peak.. its relevancy maintains intact because of its updates and added content. But nostalga is a big factor

One of my fav OSRS content creators x my favorite ARPG is good content :) Hope you stick around for the POE2 release. The POE community/devs are very similar to the OSRS community and devs. Both games have a TON of community input and memes that the game devs interact with and take inspiration from. The constant evolution of both games is both inevitable and what deepens the game year after year, not to mention both games have similar types of 300 hour grinds, and similar mindsets for spending gobs of cash on miniscule 0.5% upgrades and a yearning for less clicking and more QOL.

As a wow classic player I love Jimmy bringing me the history so i can see where new game plus is headed for classic wow. At the same time runescape graphics and style actively keep me out of the game even if i have 2 coworkers who play osrs hardcore. One reason I keep coming back to classic wow and not retail is the style. Retail seems soulless. Style is a major factor and it isnt nostalgia it is preference. Nostolga didnt make me roll 9 characters this month. That is called addiction.

Idk if you ever played WoW PVP seriously during your time playing WoW: that shit is so dead that you need to join multiple Discord channels just to hop between groups of people who want to wait in queue for 40 minutes, for a 10v10 game to get currency for PvP gear. Blizzard tried doing that battle arena server thing and they actively ignore battlegrounds.

I disagree mainly on one point, an update can still be nostalgic in nature. Even if it's new content, nostalgia is a feeling at the end of the day. If the new updates have the same feeling, the same general community vibe and reaction, even an update can bring a sense of nostalgia. People have sentimental memories of waiting for a new update or grinding for some new skill that just got released or doing a new quest like anything else. In fact, taking away updates from something which used to be updated on a fairly regular basis takes away from that feeling imo. Nostalgia is rarely ever one to one with the experience people had back when, but I don't think that stops people from feeling that sense of familiarity when it is done right, a game that is properly nostalgic in more than name may even encourage continued play. I also don't believe new innovations take away from the nostalgia, as the point of nostalgia is often a desire to pick up where you left off and maybe do something new if you feel inclined, not to just repeat everything you did back when. With games like this, people feel a fondness for what was possible in the game and they want to try new things with those same freedoms. Nostalgia is rarely something we feel about a sub-par experience, and even when it is, it's generally more related to positive events which came about because of that experience or the challenge it presented. The problem with using nostalgia for marketing is generally that the developers don't understand what about the old game people liked, the novelty wears off over time, or some big update changes a big part of what made people nostalgic in the first place.

EOC ruined what could have been the greatest MMO game. To put it plainly OSRS wasn’t a “ Go back to Nostalgia” but more of a “ Continuation of what we wanted”.

As someone who prefers to avoid socialization and having to rely on other people, having solo options is great. I don't think they should replace group activities like raids and what not but having a solo option is very nice. Plus the thought of manually going out and assembling a group to progress my account makes me want sawn dive off an overpass :)

@J1mbo The goal of season of discovery was to capitalize on the desire for Classic Plus. The idea of classic plus has evolved and there are few incarnations of it. To approach classic with the same love and care that all the content we've had since Vanilla was important, but players asked for a version of the game that expanded on the ideas of Vanilla (there are unfinished zones and areas in dungeons/raids that were intended to be additional content), without changing the premise or the core. They wanted a regular Vanilla experience, but like, add new content intelligently, where it makes sense. The problem with SoD: was built to see IF players would engage with it, so they can see what data points to incorporate into the rest of the game. Same with Plunderstorm.... and Pandaria Remix. They are all temp versions of the game where the FOMO drives player participation, with long term cosmetic rewards being given to their retail wow game. Nostalgia is NOT the reason for Wow's success either. Wow has primarily lived from The new player churn from each expansion drop. What gets attributed to nostalgia, is actually word of mount. People come to check out wow when there's new expansion content, because it gets a ton of advertising and media coverage. People who have never played wow before, finally take a chance and decide to check it out. And then those players, combined with the few very very hardcore veteran casuals who refuse to acknowledge the abusive relationship wow has with it's playerbase, you have a slight bump of players each time an expansion drops, and then a taper off through the life of the expansion, usually 2 years. Classic complicated things because they use the same sub fee for all clients, so it's hart to tell where the players are at. I would love to feature in a video and talk about it.

You two just meet in the middle and agree that the nostalgia plays a good part, but that reliably good content (community and official) is what gives osrs staying power.

Asmond is a good dude. They both have great points in this. I think overall I agree with nostalgia being a driving factor but I like jimmy more so Jim won.

I've enjoyed watching the videos between you and Asmon, but I've never really been into RS. Played it a little bit when it first came out, but the gameplay just didn't hook me. Tried going back a couple times and never lasted more than a couple days.

Everything exists in the context of our current reality. Saying OSRS wouldn't be as successful if it came out today is like saying Amazon wouldn't be as successful if it launched today. It's nonsense. Of course it wouldn't be as successful, because something else would have filled that gap in the market and had 20+ years to grow and establish itself.

Imo I think nostalgia is a good "ignition" point for older games. Like it's a good way to get people to jump on but it's not the reason people stay.

I completely agree with your point about nostalgia. I don't play OSRS, though I still watch and love your videos, but I do play World of Warcraft. When Classic came out, I of course went in partially because of nostalgia but also because I played on private vanilla servers and just genuinely enjoy that era of WoW. The friends that I've made in Classic, I was genuinely surprised at how many of them had never played WoW in their lives. They all came to Classic for a variety of reasons and have stayed since. Not out of any sense of a nostalgia of Warcraft past, but because they fell in love with the game itself. As you said, nostalgia can be the cause of someone hitting that download button but it won't make them stay. And plenty of people play these older games for the first time, and stay, without nostalgia being a factor.

First rule of reacting to things, dont pre-watch the content. People who watch reaction videos want your blind reactions, not you pre baked thoughts.

As a 19 year old new player who just started the game a couple of days ago, I don't really have any nostalgia for the game. I saw some of J1mmy's videos randomly and wanted to try it. I don't have any nostalgia for games like this as I grew up with fps games and Minecraft but I'm still having a good time and enjoying the game although this is a personal experience I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way and I'm actually looking forward to playing this game for a long time tbh! TLDR: I agree with J1immy and not really with asmon although i like and watch both creators. Anyways back to killing goblins and doing more quests :)

Honestly I don’t see why preppie prefer oars combat. I’ve played off and on for 15 years and I very much prefer EOC. RuneScape was already more of a ‘grind game’ that you put on while you were watching tv. But I actually enjoy watching my toon fight and thee abilities can make training way easier, for instance at level 40 I was training on minatuars hit a few of them to half life or so then use quake to kill 3-4 at a time gaining up to 600 xp at once. I little bit more micro but imo it’s a bit more engaging
