    I would not fish with any shorter than 9', no matter the line weight. I find short rods hard to load and cast, if you have obstructions, roll cast.

    Actually, the best way is the last way you described. It is not waiting couple of seconds; it is letting the trout set itself. When the trout bite something they do a slight head turning movement. If the line is taut, they set themselves. In dry fly fishing, this is more exaggerated, because trout quickly wants to return to the station. So, in dry fishing, I aim for the slack, not setting the hook. That mental aim change makes all the difference. Just tell yourself you are getting rid of the slack not setting the hook. If I am fishing with naked nymphs or wet flies (I don't do bobbers) I do nothing, just keep calm. The most important part is what you do before the fish bites. Except dry flies, there should not be any slack at any times.

    I can see right now until I get some wading boots and socks I need to wrap my shoes and laces with electrical tape. I hate the shoelace magnet! Yes, I’ll be the biggest geek on the water but hey, the fish won’t care. Right now I use the black caps designed to go on the bottom of chair legs on both ends of my cork grip. Drill a hole a little smaller than the shaft, cut a slit for the hook keeper, and slide it on. This changes the shape of your grip from a 1/2 to a full well and protects your cork from shreading. Another cap goes on the butt end. This protects your reel from mud, asphalt etc. Thanks for posting, Wes

    About 10 months ago at 71 yrs old I purchased my first fly rod combo, a Redington Original freshwater 9’ 5wt. Living in central Illinois there are no trout to be found so I set my sites on bluegill and bass. We have ponds, small creeks and lakes. I also signed up for fly fishing lessons last November. Unfortunately the fly shop is 125 miles away. That’s why your videos are so helpful. I truly suck at fly fishing yet I can’t seem to get enough of it. I obviously don’t do it for the number of fish I catch. Last month I bought my grandson a Zebco fishing setup and a tub of wax worms then we headed for the lake. In 45 minutes I caught one trout compared to his 12-15 bluegill. I honestly lost count. So no, it’s not the fish that are hooked, it’s me. Anyway, to get back to your video series, thank you! In four months I’ve met one other young man starting out and an “Older” fart driving by in his pickup. Your’s is one of the few channels I have subscribed to. The others are on golf and the ukulele. 🤷🏻‍♂️lol Thanks again for taking the time to share your knowledge. Wes P.S. Here’s one of my favorite creeks. I'm from a galaxy far far away... when you say Great Lakes you mean in that area as opposed to stillwater fishing in the lakes themselves? It was just that you were talking about swinging wets with that switch rod so I guess you meant rivers in that general area? I have a 9' 10wt for murray cod but although the streamers are big and so are the fish I feel I should use the 8wt that I use in the salt. I don't know how the Murray cod compare to pike... they are very heavy fish but I suspect are a shorter (but tough, straight into the snags) fight than pike but I guess I'll have to head up your way to find out, those pike are cool looking fish!

    • @greenhornflyhorn
      @greenhornflyhorn Před 8 dny

      @@Alex-zs4vb2lt5c i have no experience with murray cod but from what I have heard they’re strong fish! Pike don’t run(rarely do they)but will thrash and sometimes dog you down. You’re 9’10wt would definitely work. Early spring and fall time is great for larger fish. Right now it’s more musky that you will catch which are like pike but grow much larger. 10-12wt is the key to throwing massive flies that will make them “eventually” eat the fly. Great lakes area is an incredible fishery, it has tons of moving water and still water opportunities. Lots of cool fish too! Good luck out there and thanks for sharing 🤘

    One of my biggest issues with fly fishing is that a lot of the time you got to spend money to learn you don’t like something. Hip packs, vests, packs of all kinds, what rods, weights etc. What I have learned so far is that a 6 wt if you are trout fishermen will cover you on lakes and rivers, whereas the 5 wt is excellent but a little wind at a lake and suddenly it lacks that power. 4 wt is awesome for dry fly fishing but lacks punch when dry dropping or even going with a small wooly bugger. Well, the first question you have to ask yourself, do I like to fish? As a kid I got into fly fishing by using a tear shaped clear bobber and attaching flies to the leader. So that is pretty cheap way to find out if you like it or not. If you're unlucky enough to enjoy it, yeah, gets expensive fast. Then if you really unlucky, you'll want to tie your own flies...that hobby can break the bank.

    Wild Fly is THE BEST fly fishing channel on YT. This video is weird, but figured I’d comment to help you out.

    I've been tying flies for 55 years. I tie flies as a hobby to relax and learn new techniques. I also tie my own patterns to fish with. There are good fly tying channels with tiers who are skilled. These people know how to design a fly suitable for specific applications, how it will fish, and how it will swim. They know fly fishing, materials and proper techniques. These channels are worthwhile watching even if the flies are designed for a different environment or species than you fish for because the content is valid and you can learn from them. I subscribe to those channels. Other channels range from half decent with some good content to terrible with self-proclaimed experts who don’t have a clue. You can tell real quick if a video is worth watching to the end.

    Why is there not a list in your description section of this video? I love this as a beginner fly fisherman, but i want to see at least the actual names (rather than hear them...) and preferably even links...
