6,000 feet in 9 Miles: Rivian on Silver Canyon Road to White Mountain and Bristlecone Forest
Driving the 2022 Rivian R1T Quad Motor up the very steep Silver Canyon Road outside Bishop CA to the White Mountain Trailhead and exploring the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. Started the route from the Bishop Rivian Adventure Network fast charger with 85% charge, dropped to 55% getting to the high altitude White Mountain Trailhead, but only lost another 4% over the 39 miles down to Big Pine, ending at 51% SOC.

Towing a 16' Arima boat over 800 miles on the Rivian Adventure Network (RAN) fast chargers to cruise in the Puget Sound in Washington state. Overall energy consumption was about 1.4 mi/kWh (700 Wh/mi). Equivalent to getting 47 MPG in a gas truck, and using the RAN chargers is free at the time of the video.

Location is Middlefield Road in Mountain View California. Rivian software version is 2023.10.2.

Fun vid. Were there any sections that challenged the Rivian at all? Or was it mostly (reasonably) maintained dirt road all the way up?
It was definitely really rocky and steep, the truck handled it no problem, but I wouldn't want to try it in a less capable vehicle. It's not rock crawling though, just steep.

Thanks for the video. Really hope Tesla is just sandbagging the charge rates while they get used to the 4680’s. The CT *should* be capable of 350kw, but if that starts dropping significantly after 26% like in this case, then that doesn’t help a ton; hopefully in 800V mode the curve dropoff is less steep.
The pack being 4680's has nothing to do with its charge rate. Even at a 3C rate it would charge at 340KW no problem. If anything they just made the charging curve conservative.
Nice and good test.
Caveats: - Based on videos from other channels, Cybertruck charging would have been much faster if I arrived at the charger closer to 0% SOC (but also typically on a roadtrip I don’t like to run all the way down to 0%, in case of unforeseen issues). - This is not a true 800V V4 supercharger, others have noted that it’s 400V V3 charging hardware with V4 charging posts/connectors. - Driving conditions were ideal for maximum efficiency - with any less optimal weather or less drafting effect from traffic, efficiency would be worse.

where did you charge for this adventure? was there a Rivian charging station near moab?
At the time in Moab there was a 50 kW Chargepoint CCS charger but it sounds like that has been shut down. A lot of hotels do have J1772 chargers.
I wish I can wiggle my nose and get 6-8 RIVIAN Ran Network locations in Utah. I'm sensing a lot of red tape to get these approved and installed. The R1 line is meant to live in Utah.
There’s no red tape getting a charger installed in Utah. Tesla has 2 supercharger stations in Moab now. The state funded a number of DCFC stations well before most other states prioritized EV infrastructure.

Not a lot of DC fast charging, but there are a good number of hotels and campgrounds with 240V outlets, J1772, and/or Tesla destination chargers

@@joekeays I found some good options at hotels in Kanab, Escalante, and Torrey. It changes day to day but I think PlugShare should have the most up-to-date info.
Why did you pull in that spot to charge your truck? Went on the end of any of the new Tesla high-capacity charging stations. There is a charger set up for a Tesla X or Y model towing a trailer that’s so they don’t have to worry about backing in To the other charging stations

The Rivan's speed limiter was a huge factor. 110 seems to be its top. It would be high 10's without a speed limiter.

I just completed the White Rim over the weekend with a friend in his Rivian. We charged it overnight at Dead Horse and the. Did a 3 night trip. He returned to Moab with over 20% battery.

How was the trail condition? I'm planning on running it in about a month and wondered if the storm down there recently made the trail worse.
I did not find it particularly challenging. But washouts could get really bad with another flash flood maybe causing closures. There were a couple places that were pretty narrow last week in high exposure sections.
In case you see this, heading to White Rim on the permit in March. I didn't know there was a charger at Dead Horse. Or was that just a standard plug? Do you know if he has a Max Pack? I start at 100% around 310 miles of range on my R1T.

is the outboard a 4 stroke, 90 hp? how many gallons it used one-way or round trip ?
It’s an ETEC 90 hp. Used 12 gallons round trip - usually get around 6 miles per gallon.

I'd like to do the Flint Trail, and wondering if you would try it based on your White Rim experience. "Down" from Hans Flat, out to Hite? (I doubt there is a charger in Hite, but then back up to Hanksville perhaps. That uphill to Hanksville would be the problem.
That sounds a bit tougher. But it might be doable if you can top up at a campground with 50 A plugs in Hanksville or somewhere else that’s a good jumping off point.

Growing up with a family that had a True 10 car (4 sec 1/8 miles on racing fuel) and seeing these electric vehicles go this fast...goddamn. I bet they never saw this coming. EDIT: Also, the True 10 car caught fire basically every other trip down the track.
The Lucid is super impressive. It's almost as fast as the X Plaid based on ETs.
