Good Lord where did the time go
Later on I think I'll try to round up all the spotty flow charts I made and publish them, per some viewers' requests, but at the moment I can't quite figure out how.
Thank you all so much for your input, attention and time. Some day, when I find another mystery game worthy of this level of effort, I would be open to doing this whole thing over again.

Honest to god a fantastic video series. Thank you for bringing this game to many more eyes. Including my own! I had a wonderful time playing it after watching part one. My sibling binged your playthough and was my custom help system as I played with some friends. The first thing they told me was that there WAS a chase scene and "I'll know" when it's gonna happen so i spent 90% of the game in crazy suspense lmao! I figured it was matthew after reading his bedroom(?) diaries about how close he was to Sofia and made the same connections you did in part 2. Here are some of my own similar game recommendations: The Forgotten City and the Outer Wilds...and obligatory Ghost Trick recommendation. Tunic I also suggest, while not a mystery game it will have you filling pages with crazy puzzle notes and uses the fact it's a video game to the fullest, a lot of "THAT WAS THERE/I COULD DO THAT THIS WHOLE TIME???" that i love, like the sewer entrance or the hidden panel location. I truly wish there were more games out there that required a pen and fat notebook. Lastly some things I picked up on about clues while watching part 1&2 for the umpteenth time: The slim jim being in the church could suggest how matt was able to break into Henry's car and shove it and him into the lake. And Bernard's crazy museum house is kinda explained as I believe in one of Charles' earlier diaries he says that Scott is making for an excellent hunting partner and could replace Bernard. Although still weird to have Bernard make hunting the theme of his house. The shattered axe case shows that the axe must have been taken by someone who wasn't Bernard as we see with the knife that Bernard did use as a murder weapon, he could have just unlocked the case instead of smashing it open. Again, thank you so much! This video series has been such a wonderful and hilarious experience. Looking forward to seeing you lose your mind over Her Story and Obra Dinn!!!

This was amazing! I had to snuggle my cat when the reveal was happening for the killer as it was 1 am and even though I knew it was coming, the music had my heart rate up. I also wanted to say that I know you have said you're a writer. If you ever wanted to become a journalist, I could see you doing that amazingly as well. I'm glad you and your family are all safe, and I look forward to more videos from both of your channels.

i no hints got to the final chase scene but because i had been playing on an oldish laptop with my trackpad running away became impossible, i keep meaning to return and finish with a mouse or a controller but i havent yet. i really enjoyed tpk but that shift at the end wasn't my vibe, i also hid behind the desk for a while lol - i also played the whole game in 2 sittings one of which led to me being up all night so its fair to say i found it really engaging.

Things I walk away with from this game 1) i friggin love it 2) eff that dart puzzle When that last sequence hits WOOF i experienced panic unlike anything I've experienced in any other horror game. If you run fast enough in the sewer ... I'm not sure if the killer is actually chasing you. I stood by the door to snap a photo and homie just never came. Love this game, thank you so much for bringing it back to my attention so I played it again. Time to try and delete it from my memory so I can play it again in 5 years.

1:35 I'm fresh out of part 1. Let me try to predict these mysteries using what you've shown us so far . . . . Scott Brooks' parents are Sofia and the husband (Vivian's husband). They had an affair, but the husband didn't know Sofia got pregnant. Vivian found out about the affair, but because she was infertile, she decided to make a deal to keep the baby. Then they found out Sophia had given birth to twins: Trisha and Scott. Vivian kept blonde Trisha but gave up brunet Scott. Dr. Johnson helped cover all of this up, and Father Matthews must have found out sometime later (which is why he visited her in the hospital). The unmarked grave is Sofia's. Dr. Henry Johnson was probably killed by Andrew Reed. Andrew Reed killed himself by trying to perform an at-home exorcism of Sofia's ghost, just to knock over a candle in an alcohol-soaked room. Sofia is the person in the photo. Trisha killed Vivian (based on that long-ass theory I posted in the first video). :3 21:10 Ohhh, Vincent was the name of Vivian's baby, back before she had the miscarriage. :( So maybe that's the unmarked grave? And the reason everyone's getting into this topic at all is because they're all trying to tiptoe around Scott being Trisha's brother. 27:49 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 You re-Hunch Bunch'd them 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 56:39 This is funniest, most genuinely delightful thing I've heard all week 😂😂😂😂😂 "Okay. So they wanted a male baby. That could be because of a patriarchal tradition of inheritance and lineage... or... because there's a cult." 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Covering all ends of that scale of possibilities!! 💖 1:04:12 HALFWAY??!! Ohhh boyyy - either I have an unwarranted amount of confidence in my theory, or there's a whole plot that hasn't been hinted at ALL coming up, because I can't even guess what's left to reveal that'd fill an entire third act. 😰 1:05:27 ... Wait, are you serious? It was actually the priest? Really? :c Oh. 1:16:14 I agree with not faulting them. In the real world, obviously you need the exact code in the right sequence. In a game, considering they knew the answer but not the format, I wish there'd been a few correct answers to account for varying date formats. The mystery isn't supposed to be the formatting anyway, just the date from the plane itself, and they already solved that. 1:25:16 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Okay, yeah, the locked playground box does give me the evidence I need to believe it was the priest. The legal expenses were especially convincing, back when you pointed it out. I'm a tiny bit bummed that Trisha didn't murder her mother (🙃) but a grieving priest going on a murder spree is a pretty happy ending too (🙃🙃🙃 just celebrating all sorts of fun stuff, aren't I). ... But how awesome would it have been if I actually called it with Trisha? 😝 1:27:12 I glanced at the right page before the video zoomed in. I think it was Wren (the witch; I got folks mixed up) who noted that the flowers on the grave were fresh. So it had to be Sofia's grave, since Dorothy (or Matthew!) wouldn't be leaving flowers for Vincent. D: Does this mean Sofia never had a grave? And that either Matthew or Dorothy built a little one for Sophia themselves? 1:28:18 Legit the most dramatic trombones and use of red text 😱 Like that episode of LOST in the bunker where they finally decide to stop entering the button - fantastic reveal. I got a little pit in my stomach from it 👏🏽

Ive enjoyed watching this series so much! I remember watching Gab Smolders play this game a while ago. I did a disservice to the game by having it mostly in the background while i processed books when i worked at a library, so i got confused on some of the details and whos writing what letter etc Outside of horror puzzle games and nancy drew, it is kindve hard to find detective games that really scratch that itch for looking for clues. Like one of those early ending solvers did, meta knowledge is hard to get around. Say youre playing an action rpg, or even action horror; big room telegraphs ambush. Once you internalize that knowledge, you see those patterns everywhere. Wren noticing interactable doors/gates had a ui pop up, or finding all of someones letters earned a steam achievement are in game examples of this. Once that happens, you learn it and it influences how you play. I hope this inspires many more games (that arent just clones) to really try and create an interactive mystery Another recommendation for a mystery sortve game is The Bed We've Made!

1:20:06 I'm making a guess here . . . . . Sofia is Scott's mom, and the mayor (Vivian's husband) is Scott's dad. 1:25:37 Hmmm - just remembered Vivian was infertile. So maybe not as an affair? Maybe... there was that kid that was five years older, right? Derek? That wouldn't make sense. There were two kids that were the same age: Trisha and Scott. I think Trisha was born from a surrogate (Sofia), and Scott was born from an affair with somebody else. 1:29:15 So we've been introduced to the killer, and we've heard the name a few times already. ... I kinda want to say Trisha, because if Vivian left Scott at the shed and was still alive, the only other person who'd conceivably be on their way to that shed at that time is Trisha. Maybe Vivian disapproved of his status, even if her husband didn't? Maybe she faked her pregnancy to her husband so he never knew *she* wasn't pregnant, and the doctor was in on hiding that secret? And then Sofia - the surrogate - had twins, and Vivian kept the blonde one, giving the dark-haired one up for adoption. Then Trisha and Scott grow, start getting close, and Vivian is like "ew gross lol" and tells Trisha, who panics and murders her mom. And then - because Trisha and Scott are both dead - I guess some sort of suicide pact took place. Holy shit, I'm so excited. I hope that's actually the answer. I'd be absolutely pumped if I got it. I'd still only get half-points though, since I'm not finding these clues myself 😅 1:35:44 ... oh right. Okay it's not Trisha 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 1:37:10 👹 Okay NEVER MIND. Trisha's back on the murderer-menu, boys.

Great series! As a game designer, I think this game would benefit from an in-game hint system. This way the nudges can be in sequence, user initiated, and without leaving. And solving early correctly should be a special, improved and/or funny ending. There are a few games that allow for ending the game in the first scenes (Far Cry does this multiple times). It can be very memorable!

  • @kiwidylandeklerk

I almost didn't finish the game after the final chase sequence started, but it was actually cause the game glitched instead of being scared. For some reason when the chase started my character could only move backwards and very slowly. Luckily when I restarted the game it fixed itself, but at first I thought it was somehow intentional so it was a good thing I tried again before putting it down for good, haha Also, I suspected Mathew early on, but only because I didn't trust him since he was a priest and figured that would be an obvious twist villain so it doesn't really count. Because of that I can't remember when I actually knew for sure that he was the killer since he was always in the back of my mind

After watching this video I gave A Hand With Many Fingers a go, and I can firmly say that while the gameplay concept is very good, but I really, really did not care for the conspiracy that it was about, my lack of interest in it made it seem like I brute forced my way to the ending simply because my only thoughts were "is that all?" for most of it

  • @space_spoons
    @space_spoons Před 6 hodinami

My second and final comment since I’m just finishing the video. How I feel like the game could’ve fixed the ending would have instead been to add more chase scenes during the game. It just felt too abrupt to have ONE suddenly at the end. My friends had suggested a chase scene in the hospital, where as soon as you’re out of the hospital, it would end, and the only way you’re allowed to get back in would be through the sewers. That would also give you more reasons to go into the sewers. We ultimately gave the game a 6.5/10 mostly due to the ending, and my friend who is also a 3D modeling game designer was not a personal fan of the graphics 😅

A ghost that wants you to solve the mystery and get out alive. THAT’S why “SHE IS COMING FOR US” was on the wall?? It would explain why she is the ONLY ghost we see.

woag that's actually kinda crazy. If we're going into the craziest conspiracies then we also have to ask why the candles didn't melt in the fire? There's a part of me that wonders if maybe... somebody broke into the house after the fire and conducted a seance in the ruins? That would be especially freaky. But yeah Andrew summoning Sofia would go hard lol

SPOILERS** - - - - “There is no guy in a hoodie!!” … me the whole time, smuggly WAITING 😈 When I played this, I did it live on Twitch. The finale startled me so badly the first time I experienced it, I was thrown into a state of panic as soon as I saw the health bar appear. I enjoy mystery, but I’m horrible with horror. ESPECIALLY ‘surprise’ horror. I had my suspicions I was being watched, but this was something else. I questioned wether or not I could even finish the game at all. I considered just leaving it there and watching the ending on CZcams, live. My audience was so invested though, and at the time there weren’t too many playthroughs on CZcams to even scrub through, so I KNEW I had to do it, for them. For closure. I actually needed friends to join me in a call just to direct me where to go because I was in such a state the entire time. :”) Despite the turbulent ending, I really enjoyed the game. Thanks for making this series!! I’ve loved every second of it.

I consider myself an avid fan of horror games, and consider horror to be my favorite genre, that being said, from the moment I first stepped into the inn and the music hit me, the shear atmosphere hit me like a ton of bricks and I was looking over my shoulder all the time, and when the hospital jumpscare happened, uhh boy let me tell you, I almost quit. It was something about it not being a horror game, but a mystery where you needed to be meticulous in solving things, then suddenly having this atmospheric music, and s jumpscare, I knew somethings was completely off, so I thought as a horror experience, it did a great job.

as regards the game marketing itself as a horror game, if it had done, i simply would not have bought it and played it, even having bought and played it, i remain steadfast in my refusal to play out the ending, and stick by my decision to get an annoying email saying 'are you sure you got all your facts right' yes dorothy, i am sure i got all my facts right, because they are right my ultimate opinion on the game is i love what the game wanted to be (putting the horror stuff to a side for one moment), an open world non-linear mystery, i would love to play one of those one day, but i do not think i did play one when i played painscreek, i played a game where i was led down a path of (to be honest) very clunkily written expository diaries connected by nonsensically distributed keys interspersed with puzzles, which were sometimes quite poorly designed if all the diaries are read, i don't believe you can come to any other conclusion than matthew being the killer, i realise that's a bold claim to make given one of our detectives in this video (but i am a little confused as to why she didnt lock in, still torn by bernard despite knowing bernards motive to kill scott), however i stand by it the diaries are so obsessed with spoon feeding you the information, everyone basically announces who they did and didn't kill in their diaries, i wanted to deduce that stuff! please let me deduce that stuff game! at least three or four times during this game i would come to some realisation and pat myself on the back, then a little while later i'd read a diary that just says it and would go, well, what was the point in me even expending the effort to deduce it!! 😭am i in an open world game or a theme park ride!! unfortunately, its also not a game that rewards further thinking about after you've solved it, as you'll just notice more and more things that don't make sense, a game all about the plot like this needs to be *really* tight, and as you highlight, steven moss just makes no sense, in addition to him being knocked out in the morgue and left alive (which is entirely bizarre) there's the fact he's clearly gone through much of the daisy chain of key hunting that we have in this game, so why are all the keys back in the daisy chain, why has fathew matthew who is determined enough to cover up his guilt to stay in a ghost town by himself for years and guard the place, limit his interventions with the intruder to jump scaring the player by switching off the power, why not either kill the player earlier or have already destroyed some of the documents or evidence? there are other contradictions and contrivances, like scott knowing things before he should etc. but those two are the big ones neither of these problems is intractible, for problem 1) get rid of steven moss, the only thing he provides is some of the worst delivered diary exposition in the game, my god the 'e' clue diary 2) get rid of fathew matthew from the town, this could actually work in the games advantage as our detectives were fairly uniformly keen to exclude dead people from their guilt calculations, he could either be killed off or there could be a letter saying he's gone on some new missionary job forever, in answer to fears this would make the end less rewarding i am reminded of the perfection of obra dinn, almost all the guilty parties in obra dinn died years before the start of the game, and it is still utterly spellbinding to solve its the developers first game of course, and it had a lot of promise, and some great moments to be sure particularly in the early game, i'm both glad it exists and that i played it i am excited to give scene investigators a go, which i believe may scratch the itch i am looking for better

I waited until this third part to come out and write this (novel of a) comment-- first of all, as someone else from Northeast Ohio who experienced that storm, I'm really glad you and your family are safe, even if it did set you back in recording parts of this video! I originally had your first video video in this series recommended to me after watching some point and click adventure games during work, and clicked on it out of curiosity. I had bought The Painscreek Killings back during the height of the pandemic, and when a friend pointed out that there was a crouch function + the realization someone was definitely in the town with me (I had gone to the cemetery first and seen the fresh flowers) I did the fastest alt + F4 I could muster and never touched the game again. As much as I love everything mystery, I'm not a horror enthusiast-- but this game has always stuck in my mind to come back to. Another friend warned me this game does include a chase scene, but it's only once-- and knowing that but not knowing when it happened, I at least felt prepared enough for it to dive back in. So seeing your challenge I went back and played the game. Primed to never trust the clergy due to the enormous amount of JRPGs I also play, I became convinced in my suspicions of Matthew Brooks around Act 2 once I was able to piece together the timeline of when Matthew said he had to go speak with Andrew, and all those involved in Sofia's death died back to back. However, as someone who reads a lot of mystery novels, I'd like to point out a lot of The Painscreek Killings also invokes The Knox Decalogue and Van Dyne's Rules For Mystery Writing, both of which are staples in "avoiding cliches for satisfying mysteries" -- which in turn have created their own cliches. For example, both the decalogue and Van Dyne's rules say the butler is too obvious of a suspect and should never be considered the killer or written to be one. TPK both adheres to and subverts this-- Bernard isn't Vivian's killer, despite the game trying to point you to such, and if you're aware of mystery genre rules like I have you may have crossed him out simply due to being the butler to begin with. However, he is Scott's killer, which isn't part of the question you're asked going into the game, but it is a piece of the puzzle. In that way TPK both adheres to and subverts mystery novel cliches. I think it's good writing. My only fix to the disappointment of being beat over the head with the true answer re: Steven Moss and Matthew Brooks outright confessing is to have better utilized that leave Painscreek early bit. I think if EQ Studios had truly leaned into that and allowed for multiple different endings, perhaps there could be a sense of accomplishment in getting a secret ending before Brooks all but confirms it with his own madness. I am excited to see what they make next! I have not played the Scene Investigators demo. I actually went to school for forensic anthropology and have a Master's degree in it. It's not what I do now, but I am still tangentially close enough to crime scene investigation in a way (I am a money laundering/fraud analyst.) If they make it as open ended as TPK I can't help but wonder if there will be sequence breaks by people who have an education in forensics, or those who just consume enough of the genre (because as much as television gets incorrect, it does get some things pretty on the nose.) (That said I have a problem with Vivian's cause of death being listed as exsanguination because it would more likely be written to be blunt + sharp force trauma to the cranium given that weapons like axes and machetes just cave your whole skull and brain in, she'd be dead before she'd have bled out but whatever it's FINE it's fine.) Anyway, thank you for the video and for your entire channel, I have plenty of content to consume when working now. Now that you've gotten over your fear of anime women, I am going to be that person who recommends Umineko No Naku Koro Ni. It is a visual novel, so there's no gameplay until a series of puzzles in the very last book, but it has voice acting, music, animations, etc. It is basically Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" but with witches, and part of the reason your TPK video captured me is Umineko basically asks the same question. It is neatly divided into a Questions Arc and Answers Arc (to the point of being called that officially) and by the end of the Questions Arc (which is episode/book 4) you have all the information you need to solve the mystery. The only caveat is that it's VERY, VERY LONG. If it were the only LP/read along you did, it'd be the only thing you'd do for months. But I do think you would enjoy it (barring the anime women fear.) Again can't wait to see more from your channels. :D And sorry for the long ass comment LMAO

My playthrough, I figured out Matthew was the killer at around act 3 but he was my primary suspect for a little bit in act one because of those hospital check ins. My ending unfortunately glitched really bad and I'm wondering if it's my fault. I missed the two bottom drawers in the police station so I never got into Steven glove compartment. I then cheated to find the attic, listened to Matthew's confession then... Peacefully left the church through the front door and left Painscreek via my car and got the early leaving ending.... I feel a bit robbed but at the same time I'm a bit mad at myself for missing that. I even had a system to make sure I didn't miss any drawers by leaving them open after checking them. Honestly, I have to agree to character select, at least to some degree. I think the end chase scene was an interesting idea, but I also think it reveals a limitation to this kind of game. Do you want an immersive deduction style puzzle game or do you want an on rails "murder-mystery" story driven experience with puzzles. I think EQ either secretly wanted the latter or were concerned the former would go over poorly with players. EQ's follow up game emulates more of what I wanted from TPK. There is no big reveal, no tape recorded confession. You submit your accusation and the game just tells you if you are right are wrong. I found that I enjoyed more because it seems like EQ challenged themselves to tell their stories through more visual clues in addition to notes and journals. I hope EQ continues to make games like Scene Investigators and that if they tackle a project like TPK again that they do so with the design philosophy if SI. Despite what you say, I do think the game is marketed incorrectly. TPK is more I'd a story driven walking Sim with horror elements than a detective game. If you play Obra Dinn or Scene Investigators I think you'll feel the same way. I enjoyed TPK as a story driven game more than I enjoyed the mystery. As someone who didn't solve the mystery before entering the attic i couldn't help but feel i was cheated out of the chance to review my notes and put the pieces together. My approach was to exhaust all my leads so I can form a theory with the most possible info.

    • @vote4holt

I agree that the ending definitely removes the player’s agency in solving the mystery, and then it becomes a horror game. Maybe I’m a little blinded by my bias in that I enjoy the ending all the same, but you’re right that it’s a departure from what it originally was. If Scene Investigators has that more brutalist vibe to it then I must say I’m excited to check it out and challenge myself! Same with Obra Dinn. It’s also nice to hear from someone who really enjoyed Scene Investigators, possible even more than TPK, because I’ve frequently heard people say it was a letdown. EQ tells me that people either love it or hate it, there’s no in between

@@vote4holt I think that people were let down by SI because it's multiple shorter episodic mysteries instead of one longer overarching thread. That said, I preferred it because each level is essentially a mini-TPK without the answer spelled put for you. But it incorporates clues like bullet casings, blood splatter, and damaged walls in addition to text to allow the player to write their own theory about what happens. Only if you get a perfect score on each level does the game tell you what actually happened. I think there is a game that combines TPK and SI that if EQ made could occupy yhr same conversations as Outer Wilds. Obra Dinn is just a pure deduction puzzle game. The way the gamr conveys info to the player is completely different and cant compare much to EQ's games. But the gameplay loop is essentially eliminating possibilities until there is only one possible answer left. But Obra Dinn doesn't really have an immersive story like TPK.

I think both the developers want for players to not use guides is valid but also it needs to be understood that the game needs to be near flawless for that to be doable. Some of the issues with TPK is down to mistakes or just poor design, such as the darts puzzle. But others are philosophical differences on what mysteries are and how much support a game should give to the players. My own play through (and Votes too) wouldn't have needed a guide if there was a resident evil 2 style use of the map to show if a room was "cleared". Maybe this becomes more difficult when rooms have differing levels of completion depending on the acts. I get why the developers would see this as too much help for a true mystery. But when it comes to a roadblock in the mystery and my only option becomes slowly trudging to every location again hoping to find what I've missed, I'm gonna weigh up the value of potentially wasting hours against the personal feelings of "cheating". Ultimately I felt that while I used a guide at a couple of moments in the game, I never had help for the mystery itself, only at parts where it felt like the game got in its own way. As such I feel like the mystery worked for me but the game failed. Still an amazing game, probably my favourite mystery/detective game I've played, but it's flaws are so prominent it stops it from being arguably "perfect".
