    I wonder if the output shaft being not supported may be the governor sealing rings are not sealing as they should and there is not enough pressure to shift the 2-3 shift valve. I had that happen one time that a C4 transmission would 1-2 shift but not 2-3 shift. Replaced the sealing rings on the output shaft and it fixed the problem.

    I'm betting the modulator valve was the first problem. Years ago I had manual shift kitted ford valve body that never had the vaccum modulator connected. So I decided to remove the modulator valve. It delayed the shifts by a bit and shoften the 2-3 shift. I put it back in. It obviously still has some effect of blocking/or allow fluid to certain circuits.

    Another good reason why silicone sealer or RTV has no place in any transmission. If the gasket doesn't hold then RTV is not the answer!

    Most people don't realize just how good these old transmissions were. With a few little lube and shift timing tricks the FMX would stand up to anything a 400 or 727 would. I ran one in M/P class behind a 428 in a 67 Fairlane and never hurt it. 3200 lbs and ran 10.60's. Not fast by today's standards but it was damn fast back in the mid 70's.

    I have a Ford van with a 4r75e. The van has 99,756 miles on it. I'm second owner. The tail shaft housing busing wore through damaging the housing and driveshaft yoke. The transmission operates fine except for the roar of the damaged tail shaft housing. Fluid condition is bright red and not burnt. could have had a fluid flush and fill. Should I suspect more internal damage to the tail shaft or transmission? The original owner was Fritolay. They used it to service vending routes. I doubt it was over loaded. It is a base model so no tow package. I'm beating my head over this as it's a first for me. Usually Ford transmission grenade on me and need a complete rebuild with hard parts or operate perfectly.

    That is exactly why that safety spring is in there which was told to us at Ford tech school. However, since the later Ford TV cables have a return spring around the cable at the tranny linkage side, if the cable falls out of the throttle body, the cable return spring will overcome the internal safety spring causing it to go to the idle zero pressure position anyway. I think there was an added reason for the internal spring. The spring pushing against the back of the TV valve in the valve body is very strong. The linkage safety spring counter acts that strong TV valve spring and the TV cable return spring making easier to push the throttle pedal for driver comfort. Anyone who leaves off the safety spring will notice how much harder it is the push the gas pedal.

    @badshoeproductions Před 2 dny

    Hi Jay, I wonder if slotting the screw hole in the spring roller detent allowing it to be adjusted forward and back, could work as well? I think so but my concern would be if someone else later worked on the unit not knowing and removed it for cleaning or whatever and put it back in wrong, oops, that would not be good. Bending the internal link like you did, probably is better since it won't change if removed.

    Can this cause the car to stay. In reverse (as in wheels move in reverse) regardless if its in drive, reverse, L1 or L2? Mine is doing that after replacing the shifter shaft seals which required dropping valve body.

    At 10:06 into video, when installing the spring/ball assy. under the shift quadrant selector? I learned this trick 40 years ago from a dear mentor. 1) JT-6/Vaseline is your best friend use it liberally on the spring and ball.... 2) Use the concave end of an old pushrod to hold the spring/ball compressed. 3) While holding the spring/ball compressed, rotate the shift quadrant allowing it to push the rod off the ball, and engaging the ball. And you are done... simple huh?

    I started following you on your C-4 tips and rebuilds. Since I have a 56 292 sedan that I got running but do not know if the trans is ok I might be looking at a potential rebuild. These trans look simple enough for me to rebuild except for all of the external tubes. You have explained them in detail. I know it is difficult to record while actually working but I like how you break away to do 2 handed or boring jobs. I think most of us understand. Great videos and I hope you do a video on disassembly, inspection and rebuild of an air-cooled torque converter.
