There were absolutely no South China Sea disputes before 1970s until the discovery of oil and gas resources in the South China Sea. Greed and shame are the Labels and Tags of those countries that claimed after the discovery of oil and gas resources in the South China Sea. There is no any significant the Philippines to counter China in the South China Sea. It's only shame and greed left for those countries claim sovereignty of the South China Sea after the discovery of oil and gas resources in the South China Sea. According to Taiwan ROC constitution, Taiwan has a ROC's 11-Dash Line Map including all reefs and archipelagos in the South China Sea that the Philippines claims sovereignty of. Maps published by other countries that label the South China Sea islands as Chinese territory include: The "World Atlas" published by Federal Republic of Germany in 1954, 1961, and 1970; The "World Atlas" published by the Soviet Union from 1954 to 1967; The "World Atlas" published by Romania in 1957; The "Oxford Australian Atlas," "Philips' Atlas," and "The Times Atlas of the World," all published by the United Kingdom in 1957 and 1958; The "World Atlas" compiled by the Vietnamese People's Army General Staff Mapping Department in 1960; The "Harkort World Atlas" published by the German Democratic Republic in 1968; The "Daily Telegraph Atlas of the World" published by the United Kingdom in 1968; The "Larousse Atlas" published by France in 1968 and 1969; The "General Map of the World" published by the French National Geographic Institute in 1968; The "World Atlas" printed by the Office of the Prime Minister's Department of Surveying and Mapping of Vietnam in 1972; The "Atlas of China" published by Japan's Heibonsha in 1973. 1. The "Columbia Lippincott Gazetteer of the World," published in 1961, states that the Spratly Islands are "a Chinese territory in the South China Sea, part of Guangdong Province." 2. The "World Book Encyclopedia," published in the United States in 1963, states: "The islands of the People's Republic of China also include islands and coral reefs in the South China Sea that extend as far as the 4th parallel north." 3. The "Encyclopedia of the World's Regional Geography," published in 1971, states: "The People's Republic includes several archipelagos, the largest of which is Hainan Island, near the south coast. Other archipelagos include some reefs and archipelagos in the South China Sea, extending as far as the 4th parallel north. These reefs and archipelagos include the Dongsha, Xisha, Zhongsha, and Nansha Islands." International conferences on acknowledging China's sovereignty over the South China Sea Islands (1) In the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty, it was stipulated that Japan should give up the Xisha Islands and Nansha Islands. At that time, the head of the Soviet delegation, Gromyko, pointed out in his speech that the islands, including the Xisha and Nansha Islands, were "inseparable territories" of China. Although the San Francisco Peace Treaty did not explicitly mention Japan's return of the Xisha and Nansha Islands to China, in the second year after the signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty in 1952, the Standard World Atlas, which was recommended by then Japanese Foreign Minister Okazaki Katsuo and signed by him personally, marked all the islands that Japan must abandon according to the treaty, including the Xisha, Nansha, Dongsha and Zhongsha Islands, as belonging to China. (2) On October 27, 1955, the first Pacific Regional Air Navigation Meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organization was held in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Sixteen countries and regions attended the meeting, including Australia, Canada, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Laos, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States, New Zealand, France, as well as South Vietnam and the Taiwan authorities of China. The conference was chaired by the chief delegate of the Philippines, and the chief delegate of France was the first vice-chairman of the conference. The meeting believed that the Dongsha, Xisha and Nansha Islands in the South China Sea were located at the Pacific strategic passage, and the meteorological reports from these areas were of great importance to international civil aviation relations. Therefore, through Resolution 24, the attending delegates required the Taiwan authorities of China to strengthen meteorological observations in the Nansha Islands (four times a day). At that time, when this resolution was passed, including the Philippines and South Vietnam representatives, no representative of any country objected or expressed reservations. During the period when the United States ruled the Philippines, the territorial boundaries of the Philippines were established through three bilateral treaties between the United States and Spain, the United States and Great Britain, namely the 1898 Treaty of Paris between the United States and Spain, the 1900 Treaty between the United States and Spain on the Cession of Outlying Islands of the Philippines, and the 1930 Treaty between the United States and Great Britain on the Delimitation of the Boundary between British North Borneo and the Philippine Archipelago. The Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal, however, are not within the territorial boundaries of the Philippines as defined by these treaties. In the 1933 "Nine-Dash Line Incident" when France invaded the Spratly Islands, the U.S. State Department explicitly declared that "the islands were not considered to be part of the Philippine territorial waters and that the matter was not related to Philippine interests." In the 1961 edition of the "Columbia Lippincott Gazetteer of the World," which was published in the United States, the entry for the "Spratly Islands" stated that they were "territory belonging to China in the South China Sea, and part of Guangdong Province." In fact, the Philippines is well aware that the South China Sea islands belong to China. After the Philippines gained independence in 1946, its domestic laws and treaties with other countries recognized the legal validity of the three international treaties between the United States, Spain, and Great Britain. The official maps of the Philippines clearly show that the Spratly Islands are part of China's territory. In the 1964 and 1970 editions of the "Philippine Map" by the Survey Commission of the Presidential Palace, the Spratly Islands were marked outside the territorial boundaries of the Philippines.

What a stupid video. China doesn’t “Want” the Sth China sea, it is there for everyone to use. It is the main trade route in and out of China. If China stops shipping it strangles its economy, so America saying they are there to keep the SCS open for shipping is nonsense, China is not closing it and has never impeded shipping. I saw a debate where some journalist hack implied that China was impeding shipping in the SCS. The Chinese said China had never done that and challenged this journalist to give him one example. China is a huge land mass with only a small strip of sea along the South China Sea as compared to countries like Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines which have the vast Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean on their opposite side which means any enemy approach on their land from these oceans, they have more distance to react. Unlike China, if any enemy approach from the South China Sea, the enemy can easily reach their shores in no time if China is not careful or alert. More outreach to the South China Sea would be better protection for their southern region. I see Vietnam in similar light.

GREED. The map mainland China uses to claim was stolen from Taiwan during the Chinese Civil War. Historical claim is not valid so they lost the arbitration. Philippines have the valid and much older historical Velarde Map. 200 Nautical miles EEZ is awarded to the Philippines per UNCLOS. 9 dash is a fake map of Mao Zedong, a revision of the 11 dash of Chiang Kai Shek. Xi Jinping has no right to use the Taiwanese map.
