On board 43 054 & 43 058 (Paxman HST), Part of a DVD I did - we begin our journey entering Normanton Station, then travel via Goose Hill Junction, Turners Lane, Calder Bridge, then pass the remains of Wakefield Belle Vue Shed (on the left), then Oakenshaw Junction where the line once went off to the right to Sheffield via Cudworth, then Crofton West Junction, turning right up to Hare Park Junct...
Too many to keep in service, the expense
fantastic video.look carefully on the wasteland on the left youll see the filled in turntable.normy station used to have a massive fireplace too!
Start Old Royston Bridge. Still go fishing just left other side first bridge
Dont know where that is right at the end on single line up top Above 2 lines??
36 years later and scenes like this still sicken me.
When We had good,,1980,,1990, like,N,C,B, good,, Railway Jobs For Work Man And, woman,,we, need good, labour, working Shafer MTB
Really interesting and sad at the same time. Living in Rugby, there was always people who you knew who had a relative who worked on the railway in some capacity or another, during the 1970's and 80's. I wish Rugby celebrated its railway heritage a lot more than it does.
Nice video of steam at Holbeck. Brings back childhood memories of seeing Jubilees, Clans, Britannias, black 5, 8fs, Plus many more. The only Diesels were Peaks, and an odd shunter, and class 20.31,25, So sad but as they say progress has to come.
What a difference in the lineside vegetation in 30 years
If I remember correctly, if you got the distant signal for Cudworth North off,the distant signals for Cudworth South and Station boxes were also off. Complex slotting. The only similar example was Wellingborough
2:43 Ah, the sound of vacuum brakes... 😊
I used to walk past there in the 80's what a bloody mess, only a stones throw from Leicester City centre. Now it's housing I think. Look out for webbed feet and hairs on the palms of your hands.
Those trees have grown a lot in 13 years.
Love trains really relaxing 😁
Why was the foot crossing removed at Normanton and replaced with a totally unnecessary footbridge? What shocking waste of time and £££! It only crossed one track and at very slow speed. And how long before that ridiculous 20mph speed restriction is removed from Doncaster Road bridge. It’s been like that for absolutely years. It’s a fairly gentle curve so it makes no sense.
Worst crossing ever can't see trains cumming gate set far back surprised no one being killed fast trains go by no warning whistles from trains didn't here the train filming blow his 😡
I see Holbeck via duct was still open
That,s ,fuckin sad !!!!!! , all those classics cut up , and the shit thats now !!!!!!!!!!!!, shove em !!!!!!!!.
Hope they have redoubled that track now as that red light took ages. Wonder who made the idiot decision to remove the other track? I do love the Yorkshire accent!

12:55 The chimney just off centre, I used to work that mill, the toilet was on the fourth floor and one day whilst taking a whizz and looking at the trains through the broken window I realised I came from a railway family and thought I would keep my eyes on any vacancies to get me out of the sh*t job I had. Several weeks later (on a Thursday in the evening news) I saw an ad for TR boys, I applied and was given Ashburys box. I loved it, I then got too old for the position and moved onto the platforms and gradually hated it, I should have stayed in the boxes.
I boarded this train back in 1981..... marvelous.
Nearly the slowest run over ever
Leeds was a great place to live and work in the 1980's, before it got totally yuppy-fied. The station then was a pleasant place to linger, waiting for a train, now you get rushed around by train company workers who have been drilled in crowd control.
All it takes is for your front wheel to get caught in the gap between rail and concrete and you sir are clouted
That gap you are talking about between rail and concrete, is at right angles to the bikes wheels. Still stupid though.
DID ANYONE SPOT THE 2WRONG THINGS THE LINE WORKER WAS DOING? WALKIING ON THE SLEEPERS WERE HE COULD SLIP ON THEM AND WALKING WITH HIS BACK FROM TRAFFIC AND ANY ON COMMING TRAINS BEHIND HIM COULD BE HEADING ROUND THAT BEND
Sheer delight. Thanks.
Could do with clearing a lot of the vegetation track side.
Great rare footage . I remember as a kid them digging railway up :( we used to bike over from darfield to where wath marshalling yard was as there had been loads of humps left for us to ride up and down on the bikes ! Too young then to obviously appreciate what we were losing ! I’ve never been able to find footage or even pictures of wath marshalling yard ! Plenty of tinsley!
Lovely to see the Stockport dmu working, and by a 104 in blue. Fantastic video thank you.
Very different to today!
Are you still at Newton heath Skeff? Top link now I would imagine
Not seen that before, Dan!
I used to compute from Donny to Sheffield on that line in the late 70s. Coming home at night, when the steel works were open, was like a a train ride through the fires of Hades!
Is the driver whistling the theme tune to Men Behaving Badly?
It's the Odd Couple opening theme czcams.com/video/kDrfHj3j398/video.html&start_radio=1

Amazing how much the railway in Leeds has changed since 1989. Used to travel regularly from the crappy old station; fun to see it again after all this time.
Somebody’s lost a lot of fuel!
Lol he was wistleing convoy 4:40
Is it still 75mph through Normanton in this direction? Doesn’t feel like it. Normanton needs a full and complete upgrade. The track layout is hideous, dog-legged and slow. Why was the MML shut when so much of it was still needed for coal and sand trains? Absolutely crazy.
They said because of subsidence it was too costly to maintain and had many temporary speed restrictions. It was still a faster better route to me though
@@cedarcam Bloody accountants yet again! They never do the railway any favours!
@@nigelkthomas9501 Nothing changes up here does it. The Northern power house Ha believe when I see it They closed this line and Woodhead both well used lines and left us with poor alternatives but will they upgrade what we have been left with No.
Wow cool seeing what the route i catch looked like
He was wisteling convoy lol
Soo then.. 0.00 to 0.15 is Kilnhurst up to B6090 road bridge. 0.19 to 0.50 is Swinton station to wath rd signal box (Ragby?). 1min to 1.30 manvers coking plant. Watching this brings back the heavy industrial Stink of Tar distillers and Coking Plant. 🤮. Great to watch thou!!

Must be around 1989 as there is overhead wiring at Leeds station but a 141 in original livery can be seen near the start of the video.
Where was medowhall station
This route was the 'opposite' side to Meadowhall going via Don Valley and Nunnery joining the 'old rd' route
Brilliant bit of footage, I was only 8 in 1993 but some of the sights I do remember. Wish it was much longer, happier times.
I was 1
That tiny spur has obviously been there for ages but surely it can't be any longer than a gronk 🤣
Not as realistic as TSW2 :)
Want year is this from?
It says on the video caption *Filmed from a DMU on 15th March 1993*
EWS: You should probably have put some wipers on it. Alstom: Que? Oh, si. Minuto.
After the train comes to a halt at 09:30, on top of West Green Way, with the Ardagh glassworks in the distance, there's a change of shot. Where is the line from this point onwards to the end of the video?
Its coming off the Cudworth Branch in the Opposite direction, near Oakenshaw Jn, but the train turns left down the Chord towards Kirkgate, joining the line from Hare Park.
All the industry that these lines used to serve has gone: no wonder they've been singled or closed altogether
