This Yz is one of the thirstiest bike ive owned! A Ferrarri or a Bugatti could not do what you can do on a dirt bike. This is what makes a dirt biker the happiest, not a lot else matters. I cant resist a jump at sunset on a 35 year old CR. She flies nice but lands harder than the YZ First time i ridden 2 bikes at my nearest MX track and i was completely shot after today, the Yz ran out of fuel and the CR and me were too. Happy days. Cheers, Volksquadman

I owned a 1989 RM 250 which had a great suspension with the USD forks but average power with a new engine for that year, I noticed the picture of your 1989 RM 125 had regular front forks didn't the RM 125 come with USD forks like the RM 250s, I thought the US bikes did .
I liked your narrative except I disagree with your assessment of the YZ490. I did some vet events in the early to mid 80’s and the 490 was generally the best setup until the 1985 CR500 came out. The KTM big bores were not even competitive until the mid 90’s, and by that time Honda and Kawasaki had quit developing their 500’s. On the motocross track the CR500 was simply the best combination from 1986 through the end of its production.
Hi JHM. You will have to forgive me for the 490 comments, the 490 i bought was a pretty ropey, well used ex beach racers bike. I was about 21 at the time and it felt like i was broad slideing everywhere,. Just wrong tyre choice for where i rode on muddy tracks. I love the 490. It was pretty much an all rounder for most of the decade. Look what Hakan Carlquist and Leif person did on them. The KTMs i had a lot of success on in 86 & 87, getting sponsored by JCB transmissions and an engineering company. I tried Hondas but found the back end harsh, Northern tracks were always muddy a lot of the year, the KTMs i felt were far more stable in mud at speed at the time. The 85 500 KTM had revvs but broke frequently, They had sacrificed reliability for lightness e.g.hollow ally gear selector shafts!! rubbish. But when it was together , it won. Loved all the Cr500s, but not many got past both my KTMs. The 89 was the best i reckon, i still had to strip the Showa usd several times until they stopped their nasty habit of packing down on fast continuous bumps, after that, i felt it could win any race i went in. I beat the Welsh enduro champ in a 3 hr hare & hounds race on it, he was not happy, me and the CR were tho!
your life was near the same as mine on the other side of the planet,im 51 only broke collar bone, you had better Sussex ,but i had tone of bike all similar years, bikes in order 1981 xl 185 , then IT 175j ,84 cr 125 , yz 490 k , 86 kx 125, 87 kx 125, 89 cr 80, 88 cr 250 ,90 rm 250, 95 rm 250, 99 yz 250, 03 kx 125 , 07 cr 250 , 07 crf 250 , 07 ktm 250 sx, the last three bikes were stolen, cost me near 40,000 in bikes alone and my toyota hi ace van, thay were my last bike and i lost it all never seen again.
Great set of bikes there RS, always glad to have a banter on anyone of those bikes, i feel your pain of stolen bikes, an 87 XR600, 89YZ250 and a beaut of a TS185 were pinched. Built like an old tank, simple electrics, mind you ive welded the outriggers, a few sets of pads, same discs. Just put an new exhaust on and a water pump. Didnt need a pump, was just getting a little noisy in the mornings, barely any movement in the bearing.
You got to twist the throttle on a lot of different classic bikes
Sorry for late reply Rich, thanks for the comment pal. I realise the more the years go by ive been so lucky (apart from the broken bones) cos not that many rode a lot of these. Have a look at Kaplan America if you want to see lads riding fully restored ones, real good lads having a ball on exact same models.
Anyone remember Darryl Schultz, he rode the 250 series and I believe he took 1st in 1979?
wasnt he one of Magoos mates, remember reading in a U.S. magazine he had a lot of injuries, very fast.

87 cr125 was my first real dirtbike great times when I got my 92 cr125 and free riding began hitting huge natural jumps in 5th pinned and hoping for the best... lol great memories

Wow what a blast from the past I started racing in 1987 with a kx 80 then a 125 and then a 250 what a time to be Alive not a care in the world and the music was awesome how I mis them days the worse thing about getting old is you remember your youth

You are spot on about what a time to be alive in 1987, You rode some of the best bikes of the century and listened to music todays kids can only listen to 2nd hand. i would say the worst thing about us getting old is the creaky legs & arms from all the fun we had mate, great wasnt it...
Did all that , started on a RM 100 and rode it in school boy racing, but didn't race , just rode. Got a brand new Honda cr 125 in 84 and went racing, raced ktm husqvarna Suzuki and Ktm again. Happy days, did my knee when I was 17 , tried to get back but couldn't, keeped dislocating my knee, 😅😅😅😅 HAPPY DAYS

Great to watch, even saw faces i remember in the background, i was it bit more to the West, West Wales Motocross club, all the welsh clubs held a round of the Welsh champs ....good days, did the H and H, Enduro etc..... as we all did back then, anything just to get out and ride...and on second hand tyres experts always had for sale. Passed on my love of off road to my daughter who then did 14yrs of racing.
Good memories Richard, you just made me think of the times i bought second tyres because they would be good for a couple more events and when we could afford new uns for a bigger event, you would have all the extra confidence. good to see you passed on your love for bikes on to your gal.

My first bike was 83 cr60 raced cma at 9 years old. Had a blast! Home track copetown on.

Dead right MacMan -i bought a used '77 model when I was 18-and used it to practice on for racing motocross because it had a reg and I could ride it home. I won my first ever trophy on it in a Welsh endur0 in 1985- but it was so old I was embarrassed about it then-all the posh boys took the piss out of it ) im kinda proud of the fact now-it won the hill climb section and beat 'em all, boy they were heavy though. I only got good at riding it through mud through fear of getting stuck-you will know that's the truth as an XT former owner!!-great bands and great times in 80's- no smart phones or bullshit like today. Now i mostly rebuild 80's bikes, cycle or ride across Spain with a sleeping bag and fix lorries if I get too skint. You never forget an XT eh?- especially the twin shocker one!!-what a sound.
XT 500 was a very good bike in its day i grew up on one and yes very heavy it sounds like you had a great life seeing metallica and GnR live and racing bikes what do you do know days?

I raced a 1978 RM 250C2 in 1980 Got the masher in 79 as a 14 year old I was the only kid in the 250 class.Thanks for the memories LOVED the Euro Yammies (white n red) here in the states only yellow/black was to be had.
Aye Dave- I always thought the U.S. Yammies looked the prettiest, my pals YZ465 always suffered from tank discolouration-from the petrol after a few yrs. I loved the sound of mine, although it would kick me up the arse if you hit a bump at speed without the front end up in the air. But The look said 'CROSSER'- eh? Late seventies beauty!!!-and sound!

I can imagine-never used a neck brace before though-prob would have helped in numerous past crashes though-there is nothing like a new bike to make you disregard safety though eh?- just get on and ride! I had a YZ250W- had it nicked at the end of a season though- it was great for supercross style tracks but always needed a fresh top end to get a holeshot, i won a few races on it though- i know its a daft question- are they still two strokes dude?
haha when i got it i went straight out the farm with it, went flat out. Worst thing ive ever done because ive never rode a 250 before and i wasn't wearing my neck brace. Lets just say it didn't end to well.
I bet it is- a YZF or a YZ? The 80's bikes seemed to change so much each year escpecially suspension and brake wise- but the power was hit and miss depending who had the good motor for any given year- even Honda got it wrong some years- the 85 CR250 had no top end power is one example springs to mind and the 87 KTM 125 was rubbish- but the 84 was a screamer-an 85-500 KTM was a screamer for a 500 but the 87 was a fkn tractor, the early Big YZ 490s felt like they were long pigs. Any lemons now?

Hiya Scott- you are right- they are reliable-well misunderstood bike- it was the 1980 learners Cortina/Mondeo (showing age)- i have just sold a red one a built- featured in one of my other vids-(old farts in sheds)-ive sold five this year- it breaks my heart but they fetch f.. all, i can sell C90s for £200 quid more with far less tyre kickers involved.-I love your ss50 vid chasing your broth haha- i blew my five speeds gearbox, I had a fizzie but hit a saab head on-never liked Saabs since!!
great video, that's some trip on a 250 superdream! I recognise the superdream with the fairing on, have seen you on it in Arbroath. I live in Dundee but commute to work in Arbroath on my silver 250n. I've so far done 11,000 miles on mine with no breakdowns or any serious problems - just shows how reliable these old superdreams are!
