    Should never use the toolpost to trim the side of the tip down to size. It should be done with a sharp razor blade. The tool post tool will pull the layers apart.

    • @MapleStreetBilliards
      @MapleStreetBilliards Před měsícem

      I must respectfully disagree. Heat is the main cause of the layers delaminating. This can be caused by a couple of factors. First, cutting the tip too slow. If the cutting tool stays in one place for too long, then the tip will start to overheat, which is when the layers can start to pull apart. The second reason is using a dull cutting tool. A dull cutting tool will more or less rip the tip rather than cut it. This will also generate a large amount of heat and can cause delamination. I do like to use the razor after I have removed the majority for the excess tip. In my opinion, it is the best way to cut the tip to the same diameter as the shaft or ferrule. Thanks for commenting.

    Why don't they have removable tips?

    • @MapleStreetBilliards
      @MapleStreetBilliards Před měsícem

      @stevevenus1 A short answer to this question would be that quality pool cues need quality tips and also ferrules. The tip needs to be affixed to the ferrule, and the ferrule needs to be securely attached to the cue in order for the player to get feedback, aka "feel," out of every shot they take. Thanks for commenting.

    How did you get that vault plate to stay there without a very small hole through it?The ones I’ve done wouldn’t stay because of air pressure,and what material is that,it didn’t cut like tomahawk?

    • @MapleStreetBilliards
      @MapleStreetBilliards Před měsícem

      @Dugnew After I apply the epoxy and insert the vault plate. I apply pressure to the vault plate using the flat face of the tool post. You can see that at the 12:03 mark. The shaft will sit there under pressure until the epoxy cures. Normally, they will set for at least 12 hours. I will also note that this shaft's threaded insert was open, not sealed. Even though it was filled with foam, it might have allowed enough air to escape as I inserted the vault plate, preventing the back pressure. That said, I have also replaced the ferrule on a Cuetec Cynergy shaft, which was sealed, using the same type of vault plate, the same installation method, and had no issues with that one either. The material I am using for the vault plate is cotton phenolic. It is incredibly light but extremely strong. Thanks for commenting.

    • @MapleStreetBilliards
      @MapleStreetBilliards Před 3 měsíci

      The simple answer would be that it is all by feel. I use the cutting tool to bring the tip down to just a bit wider than the ferrule. That is what I am doing when I am using my fingernail. I am deciding how much of a lip I want to remain. After that, I use the razor blade to trim the tip to the same diameter as the ferrule. Thanks for commenting.

      @MapleStreetBilliards thanks for your reply, I always wonder how it all works out. I just got my new cue lathe, and I always wonder how to be accurate as I am afraid I might cut too deep. I see some have digital readout on their lathe, and they can see how much in millimeter they are cutting, but mine does not have that feature.

    • @MapleStreetBilliards
      @MapleStreetBilliards Před 3 měsíci

      @warrente66 I would suggest getting a piece of wooden dowel and putting a ferrule on both ends. Then buy cheap tips like Le Pros or Triangles and some cheap layered tips(but don't buy them too cheap as the cheap layered tips are prone to delamination) and practice on those. There are a couple of upsides to this. First, you get some practice installing a couple of ferrules. Second, you can practice all you want, and you don't have to worry about damaging an actual cue. After you are comfortable with the dowel, move to the cheapest cues you own. I can tell you that all of the cues here in my house have brand new tips on them. I wanted to be as confident as I could be before I ever considered working on someone else's cue. Congratulations on the new lathe!

    • @warrente66
      @warrente66 Před 3 měsíci

      @MapleStreetBilliards thanks for your advice, that is exactly what I did. I worked with my 2 house cues and I practice with those, installing a elk mastet tip. However, I think I crack one of my wooden shaft because I tighten it too much as it would slip. I put on a plastic collete, but it still slipped. Did it happen to you before?

    • @MapleStreetBilliards
      @MapleStreetBilliards Před 3 měsíci

      @warrente66 I have had carbon fiber shafts slip on me. Usually, what I will do if that happens is put a piece of painter's tape on the shaft where the collet will sit. This helps the collet hold onto the shaft without having to over tighten the chuck.

      Thank you very much! I just use rubbing alcohol to clean the ferrule first. • @ronsk8rr
      @ronsk8rr Před 3 měsíci

      @selrahcnoved I'm sure Maple Street will comment on this also with their expertise but, the Zan hybrid, which to me plays very firm and I have personally tried the Zan premium soft and medium (Revo 11.8) and they all are just a little too hard for me and I like a true medium. With that being said, everybody likes a different hit, and every tip is different. All my customers that had a Zan installed by me love them, though.

    • @MapleStreetBilliards
      @MapleStreetBilliards Před 3 měsíci

      @selrahcnoved Just like @ronsk8rr said, tip preference is very unique to the individual. What I can tell you is that I prefer the Zan Hybrid Max, but I happen to like harder tips. If you like soft playing tips, then the Premium soft is probably a better choice. Good luck in finding the right tip for you. I hope these responses have at least helped you a little bit. • @MapleStreetBilliards
      @MapleStreetBilliards Před 3 měsíci

      You can scuff it a little, yes. You don't have to dig into the tip with the scuffer. Just make light scratches in the tip and try to chalk it. If it isn't taking chalk, lightly scuff it more.

    So everytime by replacing the tip, they grind the ferrule as well? I mean about 2 mm gone

    • @MapleStreetBilliards
      @MapleStreetBilliards Před 4 měsíci

      2mm is a very large amount when it comes to pool cues. When I trim off a small layer from the ferrule, I am only taking off 1 or 2 thousandths of an inch. That is a miniscule amount of material. Yes, I do have to remove some material from the ferrule, but I do my best to remove the smallest amount possible. Thanks for commenting.

    • @capacheto
      @capacheto Před 3 měsíci

      It's called facing off. Need a new clean square surface to adhere the new tip to. It's a very small amount, the material coming off of the tool makes it look like more than it is. On my own cues I put a sacrificial pad on the ferrule so future tip changes only require facing off the pad and not the ferrule.

      I am using a Shars 250-000 OXA quick change tool post. I just recently upgraded for a cheaper 250-000 that I purchased on eBay. I am very happy with the Shars. The quality and finish are top-notch. I purchased this one from Amazon. It has interchangeable tips. Here is the Amazon link: Taytools 468907 8 Piece Set Live Revolving Center MT2 Taper for Woodturning and Wood Lathes a.co/d/fvR48xV. I wanted to try skipping that step in order to save to life of the ferrule. The tip did stay on this shaft, but I have already had trouble with some other tips staying on. From my personal experience, I will no longer skip this step. Congratulations on the lathe! Thanks for commenting!
