This is my channel. It is mostly about me, me bike, the rides I go on and the gear I use.
I don't take much interest in cycling super fast, in pushing myself to the limits or beating personal bests. What I'm looking for is to move through the world, to be awed by it, to travel slow and take in every forest clearing and mossy hollow.
I love the freedom that bikepacking affords you to let your mind wander, to mull on the mysteries of the world, to write or poem or to just go blank for a while.
I hope you find something here to enjoy, please subscribe if you do. Once my views hit 'social-media-star' level I'll be quitting work to become a full time bikepacker, spoon carver and wandering poet so if you'd enjoy watching me do that then hit the button, hit the bell and come along for the ride.

It was months ago that Alan and I first discussed doing a ride this weekend. We discussed it, agreed it was a good idea and then did no more planning until the day before when we had a hasty zoom call to throw route ideas around. Has anybody say out loud what we all truly think of Alan? He's so funny and cool. And his fantastic retro bicycle is so much better than these modern monstrosities. More of Alan, please!
I'll let this one slide but any more of that kind of talk and I'll be blocking you from this comments sections! Insubordination and insurrection of the highest degree and such behaviour will not be tolerated ;)
Listen up folks, don't miss it! Alan's Channel is now officialy open!🎉🥂
Keep up the pressure and that might actually be true one day ;)
@@JethroJessop It's true as of yesterday actually. There's a video there, and you're in it, by the way. Missing a juicy blackberry by just a millimeter😉 Go see for yourself!😀
@@Anna-Ess Ah yeah, he sent me the link actually and I didn't even twig that it would be live live live. That trip was years ago! Now keep bugging him for new content and everyone go and subscribe!
A great vid fellas. Really nice countryside and a more adventurous route than I’d have taken. I’ll go off tarmac onto trails, gravel roads etc, but not the out and out ‘hike a bike’ routes you seem to prefer. So, well done both, I don’t feel like I’m missing out though ha ga! Thanks for sharing.
I'd rather not have to get off the bike if given a choice but I'm happy to do so if it keeps me off roads. I enjoy feeling like I'm out in the wild so a few rugged patches are to be expected and they make for good memories (and videos) ;)
Another great video love it, man
Thanks. It was a great ride, I'm glad you enjoyed coming along :)
Much smoother riding. Lessons learned from the previous day?
As much luck as judgement that we hit clearer trails. A smoother day for sure, if not as adventurous 😉
lol, bless you both......do you guys not use Komoot to plan a ride? Looking forward to the next video boys
I never got on with Komoot. It seems to want to do everything for you which I don't trust. I've tried asking it to plan routes in areas that I know really well and it never comes back with what I would call the best and it's not great for making fine adjustments yourself. I use RideWithGPS to plan in advance then tweak as needed on the ride. I really enjoy the planning part, going over maps, checking the terrain and spotting nearby features. Been a while since I tried komoot though so maybe it's better now.
Very good , I like the sound of off road cycling but …… still makes for great viewing 🚲👍
Off road all the way for me. I'd rather push through a km of mud than be overtaken by a single truck
My darling wife thinks Alan is a "young smoldering Johnny Depp" ... Still, a view is a view...
So Alan gets Johnny Depp while i have garnered two comparisons to Alan Partridge. I gotta find a new riding buddy 😉
Great stuff as always. I think a trip down there might be on the cards before summer is out. I must get out of Wales soon! It's hard as it's all on my doorstep! Elan Valley this weekend. Looking forwards to the Cairgorm Loop. Looks to be great route
Wales could keep me entertained for a long while. There are plenty of good rides round this way but you have to plan more to avoid towns and main roads and all that. Much harder to find routes that feel like you are really out in the wild. Just back from Scotland now. It was amazing! I have a tonne of footage to go through but will start editing soon!
Alan's first introduction was much more fitting. And, yes, I know I'm encouraging him. Suck it up. 😂 On the serious side, the countryside looks much nicer in the sunshine.
Everything looks better in the sunshine. It still amazes me how much difference clear skies make to a ride! Alan doesn't really need any encouragement to be honest. He's like this all the time, even when the camera is off. It's exhausting 😉
Great to see you two on a trip. Great to see Alan. That was quite a track! Hell yeah it was bikepacking! You guys packed some things on a bike and rode somewhere😂. Maybe on the next trip we can see the nano in full wood flame😉👍🏼. I went on a little solo backpacking trip this past weekend and my sawyer squeeze pooped the bed on me so thank goodness I had the nano so I could use the methylated spirits sparingly when it was raining and burn wood even in a sprinkle to boil water to make it safe to drink. Always good to have a wood burner around… especially a nano because it requires such a small maximum diameter twig to run. Hey.. take care sir and we will see you soon. NQU
Good old nano to the rescue! I've just come back from a trip in Scotland but we passed No Fire signs on every gate so no twig burns sadly. Not sure what the next trip will be but maybe I'll do some more camp cooking videos soon ;)
Most of your route looked like a dream! I’ve been riding my Ogre on quite a bit of single track lately and I can’t believe how well it handles it. Love the video! Alan is cool and all, but you’ll always be the star! 🤩
Finally, a voice of reason recognising Alan for what he is - Robin to my Batman, a sidekick, comedy relief from my wisdom and insight. Alan, I hope you read this one and take note! Glad you are enjoying the Ogre. I'm just back from Scotland where we rode a lot of pretty technical single-track which was eaten up by mine! It's an awesome bike!
That sounds like a great trip. I look forward to seeing you slay some Scotland single track!
Alan is like Gromit (as in Wallace & Gromit), he doesn’t say much, but he always gets you out of trouble 😂😂
I don't need that freeloader to get me out of trouble! Though this video may actually suggest otherwise ;)
Looks a great couple of days. I completed the last two sections of the KAW yesterday and today. Yesterday I went along some of those trails. Fantastic time. Though rather hot through the common ! Good luck with your Scotland trip !
i recognised a few sections from our KAW trip as well. In fact we even recreated a shot from the series for the truly dedicated to spot ;)
Hey ho Jethro brilliant days ride!! Should Alan start his own channel i fear he would break the internet he is the GOAT. Look forward to the Scottish adventure 👍
That's the plan. He goes to the moon and I ride his coat tails all the way!
I like Alan, I think he's so cool 🙃
Oh stop it. This is exactly what I was talking about! 🤪
@@JethroJessop 😂
Jethro, since you love Bike Packing, you should think of areas you can turn it into a business to guide or help others that may take an interest in what you are doing too 🥰
I have daydreamed about something like this but never in any serious way. I like the idea of putting together routes and helping get other folk out but it's a big responsibility, to have someone pay to take on what would essentially be my opinion. Might become a reality one day though!
Nice couple of videos. You should persuade Alan to do the Cairngorms with you. He's bound to have a suitable bike in his collection. Seriously though, I would love to see you two take on a serious overseas tour together. Somewhere unusual, say, Cambodia or Ethiopia or Chile or somewhere. That would be epic viewing for sure.
Sadly Alan couldn't make the Cairngorms trip. A pity because we lucked out big time with the weather and had a fantastic ride! We have talked about crossing the water to ride somewhere foreign but I doubt it would be anywhere that far afield. I'm already flying far more than I'd like to going back and forward to Sweden so future bike trips will ideally be served by train if not setting off from home.
Hey your riding my local paths. Wonder what routes your going to use. Me 10 minutes later... Nah am all right.
It was mostly really good riding. We just encountered a few setbacks. These are what keep things feeling adventurous 😉
Another great video Alan 👍 looking forward to the Scottish adventure, not sure this other guy will be as good as you though Alan 😂
Yeah that other guy is just a burden. I can't even remember his name! ;)
frist rule of alan, dont talk about alan
Don't even think about him!
Does Alan still have his obsession with masonry?
He didn't mention it. Maybe that was a passing phase.
Reminds me of “ Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves”where Sherwood Forest stretched from Nottingham up to Hadrian’s wall 😮😅.. The juxtaposition of characters within…😅😊.
Prince of Thieves or Men in Tights ;)
@@JethroJessop spot on, you got my drift…😂😂😂
commando is a perfect movie
I'd not seen it since I was a kid. It was quite an experience to rewatch I have to say 😉
Over the top cocaine 80s Hollywood at it's finest.
@@lazerblastoid Alan took the wind out of it by pointing out the continuity errors regarding the damage to the Porsche after the first chase scene 😉
yup, i noticed that when i was a little kid in the 80s. i just figured it was one of those toy cars or He Man figures whith the flippy damage bits
@@lazerblastoid Now there is something I haven't thought about for a loooooong time
We subscribers must all stand together in solidarity to stop Alan from usurping your channel. He's becoming too likeable. Content creator's rights have been infringed on here.😲
Likeable. That is one word you could use though I can think of a few others ;)
@@JethroJessop Ooh...ouch! 😁
You and Allen are always entertaining. Another great vid! Although, not more "Dude, Where's My Horse?" Every youtuber and his dog use this. I've heard it so many times it makes my ears bleed. Please stop :)
Do they? i've not come across it elsewhere but I probably use it enough to drive people to distraction single handedly :) There is so much bad music in the YT library that I tend to just reuse the decent ones over and over. I would love to sit down and record a load of my own tracks to use but I just never seem to find the time.
Last item was gold! Can relate. I wanted the Chair Zero, but it was way too narrow for this lady's hips!😂 Bought the Helinox Ground chair instead, which is better fit for my butt, but very low and not practical to sit in when cooking etc.
To be honest even the zero is not the greatest for cooking and stuff. It tends to slump me back a bit. It's good for lounging which is nice but I often find myself back on my knees when I need to cook. Glad you agree with item 6 though. It's an important one but very easy to overlook!
Yes I used to do the same thing as you
No way - just watching this now having completed the route a couple of weeks back and it looks like I camped at exactly the same spot on Drunkie! Love the vids, and love that your pace is closer to mine than most of bikepacking CZcams.
That was a great spot! I remember that night very well and only wish it had been a little bit warmer so I could have taken a dip 😃 My pace seems to be pretty set now I think. After years of riding I'm confident I can do 60km a day on pretty much any route and am happy to do less if a nice camp spot presents itself. It's all about the journey right? Why rush to the finish line? How did you find the route? It was pretty wet up there until recently wasn't it?
Hello, Alan.
Stop encouraging him!
Hi 👋🏼
Bravo young men!
Thank you :) I'm glad we delivered!
What a good mate, bringing you a choccy bar. Excited to see what other adventures you get up to this season while I watch from a cold New Zealand.
He is a decent fellow for sure! I'm just back from five days in Scotland (though not with Alan) which was epic. I've not been through the footage yet but it should yield some good videos over the coming weeks!
Alan AND a new Thuttocks, 🎉 what more could we ask for. My last video also suffered with tech issues. Thanks for sharing what you can. Jolly entertaining 👍
Bloody gremlins. They get everywhere! Fortunately I only lost a few shots and was able to work round it. Would be a bummer to lose anything more than that though.
..still owes me the money for that Tunnocks!
@@Alan_s_Channel I'd watch him, he's a slippery fellow... Don't let him palm you off with some wooden beads, they're not real currency, I've tried 😔
@@Cobwobbler I thought those beads seemed a bit soft… he told me they were made out of masonry leftovers!

@@JethroJessop Ah, but what happens after the Apocalypse?
@@Cobwobbler I won't survive the apocalypse. Way too soft ;)
I'm sorry & really surprised to hear about your saddle sores ,After all the touring you do .Some tips I've learnt since having bad sores after doing a very wet LEJOG was Saddle cream in the day & Sudorcrem in the evening.I stopped using padded shorts & just use seamless boxers .I ditched my brooks saddle a got a specialized power saddle & a Cain creek ee silk thud buster .This works really well for me .The trouble with padded shorts is once they compress it's another thing to rub .If you still want to use them ,use a different make every other day so the seems don't rub in the same areas .
Did I say I had saddle sores?? I honestly don't remember but I was exaggerating if I did. A slightly bruised arse is the worst I ever suffer from and I've not had actual saddle sores for many years. I also have the eesilk and it is great! Got an ebay bargain and have been very pleased indeed with how much difference it makes!

Thanks for this series. Already watching your more current vids but now found the Denmark serie. I’ll be riding the route 1 in August so this is a nice preview. Looking forward to the shelters. Can you remember what month you were in Denmark?
Think it was May when I was there. The weather was decent though I got rained on a few times. It's a great ride, you will have a fantastic time!
Thought you were going into Tunnockgate territory for a moment! You really did travel through the wilder parts of North 'Ampshire
I didn't even know there were wild places in Hampshire but we seemed to find the best of them!
YESSSS!!! The damn good duo is back!!!
Just one of the many ways that people refer to us ;)
Absolutely mental weather. Great fun though!
I agree wholeheartedly with both those statements!
You don’t use clipless pedals and cleats then? i.e. Shimano mtb type clips and shoes. For better pedalling and walking? There are other types of course, but I think the Shimano Deore XT would suit you? I use the XTR, but that’s just cos I am loaded and money is no object! I assume you’ve given them or something similar a try, I was just wondering on your thoughts! Thanks for a great fun vid both.
I did use SPDs for a year or so but I never really got fully comfortable with them. They definitely help in terms of power delivery but when you get off road and the trails get rutted and rocky and technical they just become a liability. I toppled sideways on hidden obstacles one too many times and went back to flats. I tried those pedals that are SPD on one side and flat on the other for a while but just found I was on the flats so often it wasn't worth it. I tried toe straps too but had a similar experience when going off road. I see you can get magnetic systems now. That's an interesting idea but too expensive to try on a whim.
Good you’re out enjoying the countryside and your riding. Well done. Thanks.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank's for watching :)
