🌴 well I just bought a motor today, the guy I bought from said it was a 9.9 johnson , but the motor is blue and the cowl is white with Johnson decals ,I don’t know if some one put a Johnson cowl on it or what , he said it ran when he used it but it sat for 2 yrs ( don’t know if He ran the gas out be for putting it away or if it sat with gas in it ) , the engine seems pretty clean for a 50 year old motor I’m thinking it’s around that age , do you know how to find out what year it is on serial numbers ? It says it’s a model # 9622A 🤔

I wanted you to show how to set the points...not only talk about it. Do I need to turn the crankshft to get the 0.020 gap? Right now, I have no gap on any of the points....Also, I'm missing the copper washer on the crankshaft. Is that of any importance?

That looks like it has the wires(2 green wires) so you can put a rectifier on it to charge your battery.

all the comments about the water pump ha ha ha these motors dont have a telltale at least not from factory and i wouldnt trust the temp sensor in the head they go bad after all these years best bet is to put a temp sender on head run a wire to dash put a temp gauge in very easy to do very inexpensive

You are supposed to run your water hose off the inlet at the back of the motor because you can burn out your impeller water pump by using the cups on the lower unit. It happened to me.

I have same motor. I can’t get a compression tester to fit. Bought a leak down tester kit but the spark plug well is too narrow to fit it. Do you have a link for me for one you used? Thanks

What did you hook the red wire to when checking for spark? I saw you clip it onto the plug, but what did you hook the other end of jumper to?

Worked out, put a new pull rope, new Impeller, lower grease, then found out the power pack was bad , replaced, took it out ran like a top, still running strong! Thanks .

Why did you not clean those "dirty" lines up? Why did you not replace those brittle fuel lines to and from the pump? Why did you not ground both spark plugs at the same time (using crocodile clips and wires) so the CDI unit would not be at risk of blowing up? Why did you not take every electrical plug and connection apart and clean them...as corrosion is the worst thing for an engine used in a wet environment? Why did you not immediately disassemble the leg and check the impellor before it shattered and drove all those bits of rubber up into the head and cooling passages?

would be nice to see how you filled and bled the system.

I've just brought a 1978 75 stinger back from the dead too. Those old OMC engines will run forever if they are used, and serviced. I love them.

Do these motors work without the CDI box

i have a question that I'm am baked with. 1986 40 hp j40eslcde. has good spark. 150 on both cylinders, carbs rebuilt. still won't run. sprayed some fuel in cylinders and nothing at all. any suggestions. thanks

Thanks for taking the time out of your rebuild to video and post it for the rest of us. I'm in the beginning stages of tearing my motor down, and i have a similar situation with low compression. I had planned on doing the exact procedure that you detailed to get the compression higher, so your video was very helpful. I especially like where you checked the head for warpage and corrected it at home, without having to take it to a machine shop. My only question is whether you checked your reed valves? I've seen where they can bend open over time and not seal completely. Dangar Marine had a good video on how to correct this, by simply removing them and turning them over. Anyway, thanks again for adding this video to the collective knowledge database of CZcams!👍👍👍
