Chimney Rock – Place to visit on the Oregon National Historic Trail
Rising more than 300 feet above the surrounding landscape, Chimney Rock is visible for miles. Its grand spire served as a marker for trail travelers on the Oregon, California, Mormon Pioneer, and Pony Express national historic trails. Inspiring awe in those who saw it, Chimney Rock was mentioned in more emigrant diaries than any other feature along the Oregon Trail.
This Nebraska icon continues to inspire awe and curiosity in visitors today. Thirty minutes’ drive east of Gering and Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and just south of the town of Bayard, is the Ethel & Christopher J Abbott Visitor Center. There you can explore the history of the overland migration through interactive exhibits, and artifacts on display. Discover the realities and misconceptions that surrounded and influenced the meeting of Native and emigrant peoples, and try your hand at packing a wagon for the journey.
Visit the History Nebraska site for information on hours of operation, programs, and fees: history.nebraska.gov/rock/

My ancestors here married and grew families with off-continentals, moving to Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado of their own accord and at their own pace, becoming passably white enough to enjoy all white privileges right under noses of the white governments despite outlawing of intermarriage-laughing at how easily we have fooled them all.

Andrew Jackson was the last president to actually pay off the national debt. He should be honored in that sense but as far as how he treated us Native Americans is a completely different story. Lets not get it twisted that the man did good things economically.

Indigenous Peoples is the term that should by used. Happy Thanksgiving to all who have had to endure hardships such as this. We should be trying to find ways to right the wrongs of past generations, not trying to "cancel" history. Thanksgiving is supossed to be about honoring their histories... that means acknowledging the wrongs, not suppressing the truths.

I live in Tennessee and I always hate when people bring up "southern hospitality" when the southern folk were the ones who benefited off of the removal of native Americans. Makes me sad to see what the natives went through because of greed. From a latina with native blood to my fellow native brothers and sisters, they tried to destroy us in all of the americas but they couldn't wipe us out completely❤ we're still here.

I live 20 miles north of Anna, Il, where the trail passed through. Last week I visited and photographed the Camp Church site. I'd long known the TOT passed through southern Illinois, and that stretch was probably the most difficult part of their journey, but this was the first actual site I've visited. My mother is from OK City, and it's been in the last few years we conclusively learned we have a breath of Cherokee in us. That blood was likely introduced in the 1850s in Oklahoma. This is one piece of American history I hope is never repeated...
