    Thank you for the info. I am in the process of relaunching my business, but with a different product. When I started this a few years ago, I did not have much success. I had my friends but outside of that it was hard. I accounted for the fact that my products were more made to order which is difficult to sell, but also it was more for special holidays/occasions which is hard to sell with too. Then, it cost a lot to make the tutus or costumes and used a lot of time. Launching a new product with a shortened business name I believe will help. Shopify and TikTok are great for getting your products out there as well since Etsy is so saturated. lol my new product has such a higher demand and marketing ability too. I think it’ll be More successful. Your video is helping to organize things too

      For sales tax, since you already have your state permit, you still file when due - even if you have nothing to report. If you don't have any sales for last year, I wouldn't file a Schedule C until this year.

    Can you also include in the videos the answer to the following question , if for example your business is in the state of Michigan and other states start buying from your online store which is located in the state of Michigan, when or if you have to pay taxes to other states because buyers are buying on your online store from other states ! Or when does nexus also come into play from outside of state purchases ! These questions will really help me and others like me who are really confused and frustrated and just ready to give up on e-commerce! Thanks for the idea! Digital products are subject to sales tax in about half the US states with sales taxes. So you really have to see where you have nexus and then determine if your state charges sales tax on digital products. To be clear though, this video is about income taxes - which will apply to your digital goods regardless of what's going on with sales tax.

    • @paperandspark
      @paperandspark Před 3 měsíci

      Marketplaces will remit and collect on your behalf yes. You still can cross a state's economic nexus threshold though and have to deal with that state's sales taxes if you are selling somewhere other than a marketplace, which is why you may still need to track your sales by location.

    You are a lifesaver!! One question - I bought a ton of supplies to just have fun making crafts at the beginning of the year before I planned to actually sell them and set up as a business. Since I was just buying supplies to have on-hand, I didn't save the receipts. How do I denote that in my raw inventory? I know in one video you said to estimate what you paid, but do you have to do anything separate for the items you don't have receipts for come tax season?

    • @paperandspark
      @paperandspark Před 4 měsíci

      For tax purposes I would never recommend estimating what you paid (it's ok when trying to PRICE your products though). Generally for tax purposes, no receipt means no deduction - which means if you enter it on your spreadsheet it's got a cost of $0.

    • @paperandspark
      @paperandspark Před 4 měsíci

      For tax purposes/cost of goods sold, you want to enter it for what you actually paid - including any discounts subtracted out, including any sales tax you actually paid (you may have to divide that up amongst items on your receipt!).

    • @paperandspark

    @susieq9849 Před 5 měsíci

    Okay now I am confused. If I have an e-commerce POD business that I use 5 different sites to sell on, do I need to purchase 5 different spreadsheets from you? Or, could I not "save as" the entire workbook for each site I sell on and import *csv files into each from the sites reporting? Sorry, very confused as to why I would need to buy specifically built workbooks (which you don't offer but 1 of the sites I actually sell on) if I were to buy the sellers spreadsheet workbook. Wouldn't I own the right to use it and save as I see fit? Not trying to be obtuse or confrontational, just genuinely confused.

    Your video was great. However, there is still something I do not understand. I would appreciate it if you could help me. I am currently a partner in a multimember LLC established in Florida. Our company is physically located outside the US and we sell online through Amazon and Shopify. The Amazon platform has collected sales taxes in all states for us since our first sale and paid them to those states for us, but shopify has not started collecting sales tax because we still have not reached enough sales by following the threshold values according to the states. For this reason, since we did not have any nexus, we only received a certificate of registration from the state of Florida where we are established. In this context; In the state where we are established, we generated a total revenue of 2000 dollars in a total of 5 sales. For 1700 dollars, which constitutes 4 of this, amazon itself collected approximately 50 dollars of sales tax and paid it to the state on our behalf. Since we had 1 sale of 300 dollars from Shopify,we did not collect sales tax because we were below the threshold value. Now how will I enter the values of "gross sales", "exempt sales", "taxable amount" and "tax due" when filling out the online form during the sales tax filling.

    • @paperandspark
      @paperandspark Před 5 měsíci

      Hi there, Shopify is not a marketplace - so it will never automatically collect & remit sales tax on your behalf, like Amazon does (because Amazon is abiding by a different set of rules as a marketplace facilitator). It's your responsibility to set up Shopify to collect sales tax on any sales in which your business has a nexus in. If you have a PHYSICAL NEXUS in FL because that's where your business is established, then it doesn't matter when/if you reach that state's ECONOMIC nexus. Now I'm not totally sure if an international company with their LLC established in FL constitutes any physical nexus - you need to figure that part out first. If it does, then it's on you to have your sales tax permit in FL, set up your Shopify to charge your FL state customers properly, and pay that on time. Again - if you have any sort of physical presence that constitutes nexus in any state, it doesn't matter if you have hit that state's economic nexus or not. Make sense? On your sales tax forms, your marketplace sales are usually reported as exempt or nontaxable. Only your in-state sales that were subject to sales tax would be reported as taxable.

    • @paperandspark
      @paperandspark Před 5 měsíci

      I would probably list whoever you actually paid for your label (so if you bought it through Etsy, I'd list Etsy as the vendor). You could put all your packaging under the postage or office expense tab - whatever your preference is!

  • @warclassics
    @warclassics Před 5 měsíci

    Hi Janet, do we need to manually enter shipping amounts when we sold items with free shipping?

    • @paperandspark
      @paperandspark Před 5 měsíci

      Think of your shipping as two pieces - one is what the customer pays you for shipping, which would be imported in from your Etsy CSV as part of your revenue. When you offer free shipping, that is $0 in this case. The second piece, which is totally separate from the first, is what you actually pay for shipping - you will enter that on your yellow postage tab. It is an expense.

    • @paperandspark
      @paperandspark Před 5 měsíci

      A 1099 is not something you would need to file in any instance - it's something you would receive. $600 is the threshold amount for payments processed for 1099Ks. Interest income is actually a whole different animal, with different thresholds and on a 1099 INT instead.

      You can treat those just like any other inventory - just mark them as used or sold and the cost will flow to your cost of goods sold

      Yes you can - some of those things are considered inventory and shouldn't be deducted until you use and sell it

    I started my business in September 2023 but put the date as of January 2023 and no data was entered until July. Is that ok?

    Hello! Please give me some advice. I am trying to file my taxes on turbo, and I do not see a 1040 form. They're asking about 1099... do I fill out that part? What is a 1099 vs 1040 form? I'm just so confused. I have an LLC but it's an independent LLC, and I did not make more than 500 as I started in November of 2023. Can you help me on any advice?

      A 1099 is something you may have received for the work you do in your LLC, not something you fill out on TurboTax. You will use TurboTax to file your Form 1040 (personal taxes) and potentially a Schedule C for your LLC.

    Great Video. I have question on COGS pertaining to using manufactured aluminum to produce products . I received product as 10 foot form from my vendor, cut it down to 6 foot to send to an end user. My manager stated the reaminng 4 foot material is considered scrap, since the Bill of materials extracted it in a printed production order. I question this, saying the remaining 4 foot material can be in fact, used for a future 4 foot order (Which we do sell). What is the proper way to leave the reaminng 4 foot material in or out our inventory ?

      When you initially enter the 10 foot purchase in your inventory, are you able to enter it in units - say by the foot? Then ideally you can mark 6 feet as used, with the cost of the remaining 4 feet staying behind in your inventory.

      @paperandspark I think I meant to say Cost of goods manufactured. Rather than sold. I was questioning my managers view point stating the ERP software creates a production order to yield a portion of the aluminum. The manager states the reaminng is part of the Cost of goods manufactured or should be scraped . I believe the yield cut could be created to a new "part #" and therefore get pulled from inventory the next order. But when we do a full inventory the computer counts the full pieces of aluminum tubing. I'm wondering from an Accounting standpoint point of view are we not counting the remaining tubing properly or should the remaining cuts be converted to a new part # ?

    I have used Chat GPT to generate my listing content and it turned out not only informative but also funny. And I like that you can have it regenerate for a different take on the message.

    I plan on using payhip to create my website to sell digital products.Does your spreadsheet tools support this

      I don't have anything that imports in directly from Payhip. I believe it connects to PayPal and Stripe though, so you could use the PayPal Seller Spreadsheet I have to import in your PayPal sales and then manually enter in your Stripe sales if needed. paperandspark.com/product/paypal-seller-spreadsheet/
