How I grow a $200 blueberry in Texas |What not to do!
zhlédnutí 147Před 3 měsíci
I live in the San Antonio area of Texas and have been trying to grow blueberries in the ground. Unfortunately it has been a failed experiment and has only yielded a few blueberries over the year. My advice is to stick to containers.
I let this compost sit for 1 year. Here’s the result

Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
@@sanantoniogardening keep up the good work . It might come in handy real soon.
@anthonypaparo1975 thanks and I hear you.
Found this video today. It’s true. Not many out there filming gardens in or near San Antonio. Thanks for posting
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
I understand what you mean about the tomatoes slowing down. I had one in a pot and when it got to the point where it looked sad, I just moved the pot into the partial shade and it seems to be doing much better.
Same here. Hopefully they bounce back when things cool down.
So impressed with your cucumber. My cucumbers are being eaten by something. Maybe I should try the Japanese cucumber variety.
Thanks for the comment. We have been getting 8-12 cucumbers a day consistently. I would recommend trying the Asian variety next year.
San Antonio gardener here. Figs are going crazy. Wait until they are slightly soft before you pick them. I quarter mine and put them in the dehydrator. Add nothing to them and they are a sweet snack during the day time. Great job on your garden!
Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.
So hot, I use shade cloth in the the garden your garden looks great love the figs Yum!
Thanks for the comment. Hopefully we get some cooler weather soon.
I've seen cooks make refrigerature jam from figs. Some add a strawberry flavoring. Both are good. Pick your figs when they just start to ripen or the squirrels will get them! Let the figs ripen on the counter. I planted my fall tomatoes last weekend after putting up shade shade cloth.😊❤
Thanks for all the tips. I’ll try that out and let everyone know how it goes.
@sanantoniogardening Your welcome, fellow San Antonian!
Nice video. My mom used to substitute fig in any recipes that called for dates -- date bars, filled oatmeal cookies, etc. Delicious.
Thanks for the tips. I’ll look into that.
Congrats on the squash! Cant keep the vine borers off of mine
Thanks. They got most of my other squash.
Wrong
Thank you for the thoughtful comment.
Your channel came up on my feed. You’re not the only content creator in SA. Many of us are around, and have been growing for decades. We don’t usually pinpoint our city location. Very nice garden. Thank you for sharing your journey. Keep cool. Keep growing.😊🫘🌱
Thanks for the comment and it’s nice to know that there are others out there.
Hey man! I've been looking for a san antonio gardening channel
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment
How tall do these get?
Mine is about 6’ right now.
Nice assortment!
Thank you
just saw a video from last year and jumped to here! lots of progress! really encourages me for my start up garden here in SA. thanks for sticking to posting! great updates and thorough. congrats on your journey so far.
Thank you for watching and the words of encouragement.
Thank you for starting this. I'll be following from the Jefferson area off Babcock and Fredericksburg rd
Thanks for watching
How far can you dig down before you hit limestone/rock?
It varies in my yard. It’s somewhere between 6”-24”. Thank you for the comment.
@@sanantoniogardening lucky you! I am lucky to get 2-4” of soil up north of canyon lake! I am adding loads of dirt n compost to my backyard, then building raised beds
That’s the way to do it. If you have a lot of time you can also drop tons of wood chips and mix with coffee grounds. In a few years you’ll have a thick layer of top soil.
Omg... I'm in Schertz also! My plan is to get rid of 99% of my front lawn... it's been crispy since May 😜. Just found your channel so I'm going to see what I can find here to help that process out.
Thanks for the comment neighbor. I have gotten rid of 95% of my front so far. My plan is to add some more drought tolerant win fall and will make some videos.
I think I’m your neighbor

Wow 🤩 everything is looking great!!
Thanks. It’s slowly coming together.
Aww man!!! 😆 I just put one in the ground 2 weeks ago. I guess I’ll dig it up lol
I would recommend putting it in a pot
Hey AJ, thank you. Would you have any starter nodes i can buy to start a cane plot here in texas?
Hi. I bought my starters off Etsy but some friends told me I could have went to an Asian supermarket and found some pieces. I would recommend checking out a market near you.
Wouldnt this compost become very acidic since both coffee grounds & oak leaves are acidic?
Thank you for the comment. I’m not sure about the acidity. I’ll have to do a ph test next time.
I love your round bed! I have extreme dry heat in summer. I tried planting potatoes in part shade and they did not do well. When I planted them in full sun they did much better. This surprised me since our heat gets up to 115°. I start everything as soon as the danger of frost has passed.
Thank you for the comment and best of luck in your garden.
Wow 🤩 everything looks great! Your sugar cane is growing beautifully ❤
Thank you
An, you the man bro. You’ve always been an inspiration. I too am a compost nerd. I picked it up on my time in Oregon. Now my compost is a year to year endeavor in Las Vegas. I’m such a nerd that I moved my compost from house to house in Las Vegas. I use red worms in my compost and they proliferate and break down the new organics I constantly add. You’re brilliant brother.
AJ, not An, lol
Thanks brother. I appreciate the kind words and have enjoyed watching you grow and evolve in many ways. It makes me proud to see that and any compost nerd is a good friend of mine. Keep up the good work and post some of your stuff online so I can see what you have going on. Thanks again. My best to you and the family.
Hopefully you wore a mask while cutting those rail road ties! Very very toxic
Thanks for the comment. I should have worn a mask but unfortunately I didn’t.
Never stack anything like he did ! Right though the back window.
Thanks for highlighting that. You are right. I should have been more careful or have a headache rack installed.
Poor danger ranger haha
Thank you for the comment
Ass
Awesome! Can’t wait to see the finished project 😊
I’ll keep you posted.
I would have offered that cool old railroad tie wood up to local woodworkers or gardeners for their creative projects instead of wasting it at the dump. A good power wash and come creative cutting could have turned it into some really neat raised beds or yard art!
Thanks for the comment. Most of the wood was rotted and not much to salvage.
The retaining wall was there holding all that dirt away from the oak tree if you allow dirt to get around that root collar that tree will rot and die
Thank you for the comment. I am replacing the retaining wall with stones.
This is awesome! 💚💚💚 We need to make one too, with all the debris around here. Best food for all your flowerbeds!
Thanks. I’m hoping it does wonders in the garden.
Looking nice! Everything is popping back up!
Thanks. Love this time of year
Just a correction: THAN not then
Thank you
It looks amazing!!!
Thanks. I’m very happy with the result.
Awesome!! 🎉
I lived in Schertz, Tx until I was 10 and our neighbor had a pomegranate tree - I loved eating them ... they also had a huge mulberry that's fruit was delicious - - Thanks for prodding my memory
Thanks for watching and the nice comment. I’m glad I could bring back some good memories.
I'm here im San Antonio as well and curious how yours has faired. My two gran nain plants dont look like they made it despiye trying to insulate them over the winter, but I have two blue javas on the way.
Thanks for the comment. Mine died back over the winter. Waiting to see if it bounces back. I’ll keep you posted
@sanantoniogardening I'm curious if it made it through the winter? Any updates?? Thnks
Thank you for the comment. The banana plant grew back no problem. Thanks for asking
