Grace in the wilderness
Under the pandemic, life is tough. For some, it is tragic. For most of us, it is disturbing. So, how do we get our bearings? In this video, I take up the ancient metaphor of the journey in the wilderness, and apply it here and now. In so doing, we give ourselves permission to grieve for what we have lost, and we open ourselves to new experiences of grace.

Domestic violence and the church
zhlédnutí 72Před 3 lety
In recent years, the Anglican Church in Australia has recognized the growing problem of domestic violence. This includes recognition of the prevalence of domestic violence in the church. In this video, I present a summary of my work in this area, which culminates in my book 'Violence, Entitlement, and Politics'. The video raises questions that are addressed in detail in the book. My concern her...

Misogyny and Jesus

Shame is disempowering. We may have acquired it from our family of origin, but it is also a structural problem. Misogyny, for example, is widespread, and inherently violent. It is a source of deep shame. In the Christian Scriptures, Jesus subverts the purity code, which categorizes people as clean and unclean. In the story of the hemorrhaging woman then, Jesus subverts misogyny. In the process,...
Justice and the strong man

Justice is the key. Moreover, Jesus of Nazareth was engaged in the politics of his day, because of his concerns about the poor. Out of compassion, Jesus critiqued religious and political institutions that exploited the poor, and normalized poverty. So, justice is the definitive measure, and the end of the Jesus movement. On that basis, they risked everything. Dr Steven Ogden is Research Fellow ...

In the twenty first century, we need to foster a new sense of community. This will entail a celebration of both diversity and the human spirit. In the Church, the Feast of Pentecost is a celebration of the spirit and human diversity. The feast is depicted in the second chapter of the book of Acts. It is often treated as history. And, in so doing, we kill the spirit. What if we read Pentecost as...
Quarantines, vaccines, and empathy
zhlédnutí 100Před 3 lety
Under the pandemic, we need good leadership, and good leadership is wise, strong, and empathic. Sure, tough decisions have to be made, but without empathy, tough decisions can be cruel. So, what is empathy? It is the capacity of a friend to sit beside us, and feel with us. Christianity, for example, was founded on an empathic God. Christianity, in fact, needs to reclaim divine empathy. Moreover...

The issues of sexual harassment and violence are widespread. So, how do we begin to address these matters? Obviously, it will require community support and a range of strategies. In the Gospel of John, there is a group...
Spiritual not religious

There is an important distinction between religion and spirituality. On the one hand, religious institutions have played an important role across the globe. In the face of the myriad of global problems we face...
The death of God

Life is complex. It has its moments of success, failure, and loss. So, what about faith? Historically, the Christian God has let us down. Yes, the God who is king or judge has failed. The idea of the death of God reminds us of this empty legacy. However, the death of God is the beginning of faith. Stripped bared, we place ourselves in a position to identify traces of hope.

Australia is embroiled in a controversy around sexual violence and abuse. Invariably, violence and abuse entails treating women as possessions. ALL followers of the original Bible WERE WHITE INDO EUROPEANS. The Hebrew people ALL came from the Caucus Mountains and later out of North Africa where all Indo-European, Caucasians come from . Mount Ararat, where Noah landed is in the Caucuses. North Africa was almost EXCLUSIVELY Caucasian before the Birth of Christ. THERE IS A REASON THAT CHRISTIANITY BEGAN AS A CAUCASION RELIGION and was spread throughout the world BY Caucasian men. Where were all these so called non-Caucasians in the early Church?? So White people just started following and worshiping someone from another race and all the other non-Caucasian followers just disappeared? This is like saying we are ALL American Indians because there was nothing but American Indians on the North American continent 1000 years ago. Even Ethiopia was almost exclusively Caucasian as was Egypt. All the proof in the world has been unearthed proving this. ALL of earliest Mummies of the earliest dynasties of Egypt have red and blonde hair and DNA that exists in the highest levels today on the British Isles. You are a Marxist and either a liar or a moron. I guess when the Muslim Hoards or Genghis Khan slaughtered and displaced millions of Caucasians they weren't racist??? You are just an uneducated, brainwashed tool.

Your inbred racism makes you say things that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. You just don't want to say that Yeshua (upon whom be peace) was a Black man but he is , you see. Even in the Bible he is described as a Black. His skin according to the Bible is like burnished brass. When you burn a brass it turns black not olive. Israel is an African country bcuz Israel was and still is on the African tectonic plate which means it's on the continent of Africa ( Google that and learn). Plus the founder of the country we call Israel today was a Black African man who's name is CANAAN. In Gen. 10-6 it says: THE SONS OF HAM ARE CUSH, MIZRAIM (the founder of KEMET (egypt), PHUT AND CANAAN. This are all Black Africans and the Bible itself is an African history book. Europeans are not known for their spirituality my friend. Europeans were the ones who went to the land of Yeshua (upon whom be peace) and destroyed the temple of The One True Creator. They the "white " people are the same people who tried to kill Yeshua (upon whom be peace). If you don't believe me go and look at any picture of the crucifixion and you will see that the Roman centurions who physically "crucified" Yeshua (upon whom be peace) on the cross were all "white" men. To call Jesus a racist is the most foolish thing i think i've ever heard. Secondly, all of the Jewish ppl i've ever seen are light skinned inlcuding a good friend Rabbi of mine, and if Jesus had/has olive colored skin like so many say it was probably from being in the sun or God's way of saying all races are equal. Yes, he was way more likely to be Black than Germanic… but he could have also been Olive colored. Justifying a skin color that we can’t tell from scripture should force us to see the spiritual importance, as we will all be one people in the kingdom, all able to speak the same language. If we truly come from Adam/Noah, then we are one people, and color is just a modern day distraction that The evil one wants to deceive us with. Whether Black or Olive, he was the messiah. Whatever color he was, he transcends race to be King of ALL people. If him being one skin color is important to you, that’s absolutely fine, as I support that idea over him being a white guy any day, and I think it’s wrong to portray him in the way the Europeans do but I think it’s wrong for us to focus on skin color of the messiah regardless. Now, that being said, I do believe in some of the Israelites being Black. I hope we have a revival of the POC community returning to their beautiful Israelite culture and returning to God and certainly away from the gangster rap culture that SOME people idolize before their belief in God.

Do you expect me to believe after the English convicts acquired the country of Australia and you, being a member of an all white church for years. That you honestly saw no wrong doing of your country until your grandson made a statement about his friend.

I commend your sincere efforts to address, educate, and offer positive suggestions of possibilities of reversing racism. Throughout the ages, to many critically important documented, recorded factual information have been hidden, destroyed, rewritten, exaggerated and distorted, changing HISTORY into “HIS”Story. Why are portraits of the original Jews as Black people worshipped in the Vatican, yet they provide the masses photos of Jesus and Disciples as Blonde hair and Blue eyes. ? Too much historical evidence has been purposely unavailable.

Sarah Abrahams wife was white with blond hair. It says she was fair but in the dead sea scrolls it says that she was light of skin. That is why pharaoh wanted a 70 year old woman in his harem while he could get 100th., 20 yr old most beautiful virgins. Also Abraham did not want to take a woman from the Canaanites, For his son Isaac, So he said to Eleazar you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” Genesis 24: 4 but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac. Eleazar had to travel to his family in Mesopotamia to get a wife and was not supposed to take one of the Canaanite woman. Later after Isaac married Rebecca the same happened to Isaac as had happened to Abraham with Sariah. For the same reason Potiphar's wife wanted Joseph in her bed because of his unique appearance. Jesus most likely was of white skin. In the oldest pictures of Jesus He is white of skin. First of all Jesus was the Son of God but in His Human appearance looked like the Israelites the offspring of Abraham and Jacob. Revelation 1: 14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; When Jacob blessed Ephraim and Manasseh the sons of Joseph Jacob gave the main blessing to Ephaim by crossing his arms and led his right hand on Ephraim. He blessed Manasseh to be a great nation but Ephraim to be MANY nations. The blessing to Abraham is not fullfilled with 14 M Jews on the earth. The many nations are right here the 10 tribes of Israel. They came to England first and also to Scandinavia and over the Caucasus and then were called Caucasians because of their light skin. www.hope-of-israel.org/caucasiantribes.htm The "Caucasians" of Today Are the Lost Tribes of Israel! Why is it that Christian Israelitism is always under attack by all manner of groups? When you study back through both secular and Scriptural history, there is no other answer than to accept that Israel, though yet blinded to their identity, is alive and well in the world today and can be found in the Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian, Germanic, Celtic, and related peoples. Research where are the 10 tribes of Isreal. The are the white people in the western world. It is the blessing to Abraham and later the Blessing of Jacob to Ephraim that he will bring forth MANNY nations and Kings. That can not be the 14 M Jews in the world today.

The first century Jewish writer Josephus (37-100 AD) penned the earliest non-biblical testimony of Jesus. He reportedly had access to official Roman records on which he based his information and in his work Halosis or the “Capture (of Jerusalem),” written around 72 A.D., Josephus discussed “the human form of Jesus and his wonderful works.” Unfortunately his texts have passed through Christian hands which altered them, removing offensive material. Fortunately, however, Biblical scholar Robert Eisler in a classic 1931 study of Josephus’ Testimony was able to reconstruct the unaltered testimony based on a newly-discovered Old Russian translation that preserved the original Greek text. According to Eisler’s reconstruction, the oldest non-Biblical description of Jesus read as follows: “At that time also there appeared a certain man of magic power … if it be meet to call him a man, [whose name is Jesus], whom [certain] Greeks call a son of [a] God, but his disciples [call] the true prophet … he was a man of simple appearance, mature age, black-skinned (melagchrous), short growth, three cubits tall, hunchbacked, prognathous (lit. ‘with a long face’ [macroprosopos]), a long nose, eyebrows meeting above the nose … with scanty [curly] hair, but having a line in the middle of the head after the fashion of the Nazaraeans, with an undeveloped beard.” This short, black-skinned, mature, hunchbacked Jesus with a unibrow, short curly hair and undeveloped beard bears no resemblance to the Jesus Christ taken for granted today by most of the Christian world: the tall, long haired, long bearded, white-skinned and blue eyed Son of God. Yet, this earliest textual record matches well the earliest iconographic evidence.

The Bible states exactly what happens to the Hebrews (Deuteronomy 28, plus Christ IS Black Revelations 1:14-15, and see The Countenance of God Revelations 4:3 and Solomon also stated that he was Black and Handsome Song of Solomon 1:5-6). Many of the Hebrew customs are still followed in African today, those people in Israel are NOT Hebrews and funnily enough if you speak with one, they may actually tell you the truth! czcams.com/video/V1so2dkrXw0/video.html

It is no coincidence that the reflection you offer about institutional religion is indeed deeply profound because it is the truth. As a parish priest, I encountered many people of religion (they come to church) who were people of little faith. As you said, the opposite is also true. Our invitation is to renew spirituality and appreciation of the sacred within the world. This is both the challenge and the call of the new emerging church. In this liminal space, the fear of uncertainty draws us more closely into the shadows of the cross. It is where we belong, it is where we have always belonged. Dietrich Bonhoeffer himself scolded many a Christian who had found comfort in 'cheap grace'. There is nothing cheap or comfortable with living a life in touch with the divine.
