Rust Bluing a Post 64 Model 94 Winchester - Can it be done? - Gun Restoration - Laurel Mtn Forge
zhlédnutí 41KPřed rokem
A While back I acquired this Winchester Model 94 Post 64 that was ugly as all sin. A great little shooter, but lacking in just about every other department. So, I took it upon myself to really dig in deep to try to find a solution for all of us regarding what we can do to refinish these beyond Durakote, Cerakote, or painting them. Hope this provides some value to the communtiy, and hopefully yo...

Some time ago I acquired this Savage model 342, and at the time I had NO IDEA just how involved the repairs it needed to bring this back up to snuff. Designed and sold in the 1950-1955 Range, and more than capable of being an accurate and capable firearm for game. This one particularly appears to have been carried in every kind of harsh condition. So, join me in going deep into a definitive gui...

    Hey nice video ! Can I replace the rust bluing solution product by a bluing product such as aluminum black or Perma Blue from Birchwood Casey and do the exact same process ?

    I am pleased that I found your channel, I once worked for Westley Richards so I do have some background in gun making and in my opinion you have the best channel for anyone wanting to restore an old gun up to an incredibly high standard. I love buying guns that have been neglected and bringing them back to their former glory although some of your methods are new to me at 75 I'm still happy to try them. 🇬🇧

    That was a lot of hard work but in the end it certainly was worth it. Came out great. Does anyone know when they stopped iron plating the receivers? I think I have heard that it was before 1970 but I was just wondering. No way I would ever want to do that much work on a gun and I could only imagine what it would cost to have that done.

    Looks good, only negative I got is you don't have to break in something that's already broken in, even new just use it & clean it is all that's needed for break in

    38 Long Colt is not heeled, unless you are think of 38 Long Center Fire, which is a little shorter and DOES use a heel based bullet. 38LC uses a hollow based bullet.

    I've been told by many experts NOT to reblue the Pre-64 Winchesters as it devalues them. The new blueing causes the gun to lose its authenticity.

      It all depends if you're an original no finish kind of guy or a refinish as well as possible make it look decent and use it kind of guy. Most of your money does seem to be in as original as possible

    I have done rust bluing on 4 guns so far using Bob Veasey's 'Rust Blue,' and the process I use isn't as involved as yours and produces an equally satisfactory result. It is better to use a rust blue specifically formulated for what you are trying to blue, as it takes to rusting easier. I use the process Mark Novak shows in his most recent rust blue video with Bob Veasey, and it seems less involved than the process you show. I add a bit of Everclear as a wetting agent, and I don't have to worry about streaks and runs as long as I don't add far too much

    HomeDepot has a 10 foot section of black iron pipe 3/4 inch for around 32. they will cut and tread for you free.

    It is important that you let people know the central importance of 150% degreasing before applying the rusting solution. I just finished the second application of bluing to a No 4 MK I, and I never card off the frog hair after first applying the rusting agent and it turns out the same. Also, I use a makeshift accelerated 'ripening' chamber I cobbled together out of a U-haul wardrobe moving box, a small space heater, and a Walgreens vaporizer to bring the heat above dewpoint (110% necessary if using low pressure steam, as condensation on the metal will cause runs) and about 100% humidity. It works a lot faster than 3-4 hours. Great save though!

    Hey, curious, I see where you are using Laurel Mountain Brown and Degreaser. I have never used this before. This appears to give a blue/black look instead of brown. Do you have to apply more coats to obtain the blue/black appearance?

    • @BLWRK
      @BLWRK Před 4 měsíci

      Yes, so, Bluing steel is just a (relatively) more refined finish than browning is. Browning, as a finish, is the exact same process as bluing, with the only difference being the final boil at the end. When the "brown" or rust is boiled, it converts into bluing. Hope this helps!

    My first experience with the 350 Remington Magnum was back in 2000. I went in a local gun store and noticed a brand new looking rifle for sale.. it was a Remington 700 classic chambered in the 350 Remington Magnum. The price was $549.. so I put it on layaway! You could still find ammo for it.. basically due to the 673 coming out in 2003! I actually picked up the 6.5 Remington Magnum in 2005 in the 673 guide gun. First group at 100 yards.. three shots covered with a dime! That was with the 120 grain Core-Lock factory ammo. Anyways.. I sold everything in 2008 due to separation/divorce! I have more firearms nowadays.. but neither of those two! I do love 35 calibers.. so.. I have a 358 Winchester 35 Whelen 350 Legend and a 357 magnum rifle ❤ Thanks for sharing this brother

    In 1964 Winchester did not make the decision, the new owners, Olin Corp. did. Cost cutting just like AMF did when they bought out Harley Davidson back in the day.

    what is fudd lore?

    • @generalgreevus8773
      @generalgreevus8773 Před 5 měsíci

      Fudd refers to boomer gun owners, they'll have outdated viewpoints and beliefs in wives tales about firearms. Such as no one needs an AR-15 or handguns like a Glock in 9mm with 15 round magazines as well as giving out terrible advice for self defense. They fervently believe .45 acp is the greatest caliber and 1911s are the greatest firearm which is where the meme of .45 acp being known as God's caliber comes from. Also .45 acp being called .45 aarp.
