Warrior Bishops: A History
In the middle ages, martial prowess and piety were esteemed above all else. The warrior bishop was the physical embodiment of the medieval ethos: a literal soldier for Christ who fused religion and warfare.
Let’s examine their development throughout the medieval period, from peaceful additions in Rome's legions to fully-armored generals leading armies into battle...

Homeschooling is the de facto form of education for mankind. If you were born before the early 1800's, you were probably home educated. I guess Tytler didn't anticipate that the "voters" would become "money" (eg., corporations are people) and those with money would see to it that they receive all the largesse - that, despite not paying as much into the treasury as those who don't have money. A little simplistic to say that late 20th century American "wealth" was due to collapse of USSR and US geopolitical position. What about manufacturing and labor collapsing due to US business moving to low-labor-cost countries?

Add to this, in spite of what we are being told, indications are the Earth may be going into a cooling phase. This may have helped end the Bronze Age and coincided with the fall of the Roman Empire. Hope Elon Musk can get an independent colony on Mars before it happens, but I’m not optimistic. Good luck.

WHAT THE CHARACTERS OF THOSE IN LEADERSHIP OR THE "TOP" DECIDE & DO IS THE ONE THAT SHAPES HUMAN CIVILIZATION. HOW THEY THINK CAN MAKE OR BREAK. THE BREAKING MAY COME FAST OR SLOW.... AS ONLY GOD KNOWS. IN OUR MODERN WORLD TODAY, THINGS CAN BE SO FAST THROUGH TECHNOLOGY & YET, THE EDUCATION OF THE HUMAN MIND CAN STILL BE SO SLOW LOL! OLD WAYS, BAD HABITS, PRIDE & PREJUDICE REMAIN. REAL CHANGE THAT SHOULD & ONLY COMES FROM WITHIN IS STILL SO ULUSIVE. THE HUMAN MIND WOULD RATHER LOOK FOR ANSWERS IN A BOOK WRITTEN BY SOMEONE, EVEN IF THAT BOOK WAS WRITTEN AT ANOTHER TIME & PAST RELEVANCY. YES, THERE CAN BE SIMILARITIES AS HUMAN BEINGS ARE STILL THE SAME, THE WORLD IS STILL FILLED WITH IMPERFECT HUMAN BEINGS. MAY GODLY WISDOM LIGHT & GUIDE.

This is a good point. To me it seems like the "fear of crime" probably causes the "rise in crime" because as people are more afraid of it, they push the government to solve it. In turn, the government efforts cause literally everything to become defined as crime, ergo "crime rates" go up.

Another nonsense Toynbee video, purporting to draw from history to make a political point (nearly always a right wing one). There is supposedly a lack of "great men" to lead the "masses". It is BS, civilizations don't "die from suicide" or decadence or boredom or "inequality" or barbarians. If you want a solid, well researched, but *_apolitical_* analysis of how and why complex civilizations collapse, read Joseph Tainter. His argument is brilliant. There are any number of proximate causes to the end of a particular civilization, be external such as barbarian invasions, climate change, internal strife, whatever, but the overall trend seen almost everywhere is that civilizations become more complex as the grow and age. Every time a problem is encountered a solution is needed and that solution always adds complexity. That complexity has an energy cost and when the marginal increase in complexity exceeds the benefit for a given civilzation, then that civilization is spending its capital and becoming weaker. Eventually the civilization becomes so weak that the next crisis is fatal, whatever it is.

its the purchasing power of the dollar manipulated to go down...thomas jefferson said if we let bankers manipulate our currency our great grand children will wake up homeless on the continent their forefathers founded. another thing is the stupid property tax which you will have to pay. example grandfather buys house in 1965 for $18,000 dollars, ends up paying mortgae for 30 years where he pays over 100,000$ dollars. plus taxes every year on top of all that. after mortage is paid off in 1996, still has to pay between $2000-$5000 a year for property tax for that house. years down the road the 95 year old wife thats on social security barely can make ends meet every month. it gets to a point that the property tax cant be afforded anymore and the gov takes that house. if a house can be in your family for over 60-70 years and it can be taken from you because you cant pay $2300 property taxes for that year its time for a revolution. do you know what the definition of a mortgage is? mort - means death, gage -means pledge. so your mortgage actually means death pledge. The problem is the purchasing power of the dollar needs to be reinstated away from the “fiat debt based create money out if thin air” to be like it was years ago before creation of the fed. You always hear politicians say “we need more good paying jobs” that is not the answer. I have had jobs some good paying and not so good paying… heck I have had 2-3 jobs st one time. and still not make it week to week…the problem is that the purchasing power of the dollar must be reset so one spouse can work where the other one can stay home and be with the kids and watch the home and give proper discipline which with one income that takes the pressure off of the marriage and you will make it in life…for example in 1972 a father can work one job mom can stay home and raise kids. And you still could have one car on the family with a small yet decent single family home America and any other nation falls when the 1-5 percent of the population has 90 percent of the wealth. Check out other nations: France Rome Spain, etc… same thing always happens. Then that society just disintegrates into all sort of perversion and then it collapses…

Civilizations are born, they peak, and then they die usually from a combination of greed, ecological overshoot (humans destroy their own habitat) and overpopulation. Prior to collapse. institutions become corrupt like the Supreme Court in the United States. The court was corrupted by the wealthy. The Republican party was corrupted by Trump. Even though the US Government was warned in 1987 by Dr. Carl Sagan and Dr. James Hansen that climate change posed an existential threat to humanity, the US Government did nothing...they didn't even lift a finger. This is hubris. Hubris topples civilizations. Whenever humans over reach and claim superiority over Nature, (Titanic, Hitler, World Trade Center) Nature always corrects them with abundant suffering.

I think this theory overlooks the pressures from the masses that are historically exerted upon the status quo and ruling elites, and that are responsible for real change and growth. The peasant revolts in medieval Europe, the French Revolution, the abolitionist movement and slave revolts in the US, the successful slave rebellion in Haiti, the civil rights and antiwar movements in the US and elsewhere, the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, the current anti-imperialist and anti-colonial movements in Africa -- the list goes on and on. Real change comes from the bottom, not the top. The ruling elites respond to those pressures. If they respond wisely -- as in abolishing slavery and Jim Crow -- the civilization grows. If they respond unwisely -- through autocratic crackdowns, surveillance and police states -- the civilization ultimately collapses. But the ruling elites are, either way, the responders, not the creators.

(The American Founding Fathers also had a few of the weaknesses of their society, weaknesses that they did not yet know how to fix, including one that was waiting for a last American Founding Father, Abraham Lincoln, but this should not prevent them from being considered philosopher-kings, for they were pioneers, founders of a new civilization, pioneers in a hard, rough, turbulent process of building up a new civilization! Rather like Charlemagne and his predecessors Pepin I and Charles Martel!)

Well, here's the thing: the wealthy are the governing authority ! In what nation do the poor or working people actually control the government. Sure, that's what the communists claim, but their so-called 'worker's party' is just a front for the rule of dictatorial party elite who are the wealthy and powerful in those countries. In liberal democracies as well, it's always the wealthy (only this time, overt Capitalists) who pull the strings. They are the wealthy donors who fund the political parties, who pay the political lobbyists, who influence greatly the politicians, and help to get them elected and keep them in power. So, this whole idea that there is an underclass of the masses that somehow gains control of the government and becomes hopelessly dependent upon it through their voting to give themselves free benefits at the expense of the nation as a whole is PURE AND UTTER BULLSHIT ! How many civilizations have collapsed because of the greed and corruption of the wealthy elite at the top got to such a point that it wrecked the nation ? See the Roman Empire where there was never any real democracy, or the great civilization of Egypt where there was never any social welfare benefits for the poor and the enslaved working for the Almighty Pharaoh night and day until death to erect his palaces and pyramids, or see the Russian Empire and how it collapsed from the greed of it's Czar and his aristocratic elites. Indeed, with the possible exception of the Soviet Union, you would be hard-pressed to find a nation or civilization that collapsed because of its social welfare programs. But, in reality, even in the Soviet Union, it was always a corrupt and wealthy party elite that had the real power and pulled-the-strings. So, even there, a case can be made for blaming the collapse, not on the dependence of the masses upon the government for 'free benefits', but instead on the corruption and greed of the wealthy party elites who had dictatorial powers, and where the whole idea of democracy was a sham. The idea that the people in the Soviet Union voted themselves 'free benefits' at the expense of the nation as a whole is just ABSURD ! No, you should always look at the greed and corruption of the wealthy for the causes of societal collapse, because everyone knows that in every nation that ever was, is, or will be, THE WEALTHY ARE THE POWERFUL and THE WEALTHY ARE THE GOVERNMENT.

  • @davidannderson9796

The late antique world (Byzantium in 5th, 6th Century, etc.) was not a dying civilization. It was a dying Empire. The civilization lived on in Baghdad, in Bulgaria, in Kiev and Rus, in Ottoman Istanbul. Civilizations change. That does not mean that they are dying. The late antique world only died in one region- mainland Italy and western Europe north of the Alps. Because there, high Classical Civilization was young and had been patronized by the dying Empire, and died with the Empire that patronized it. A Roman Empire that died in those lands long before it died in the east in the world of Constantinople. Civilization in Spain, Sicily, Tunisia and north Africa was handed off to the beautiful Visigothic and Vandal successor kingdoms, and in time to the Arabs. It did not die there, nor did it die in Ravenna in mainland Italy, which handed off its civilization to Venice. He is right on the first point. Fear is the enemy of lots of things. Fear should be taken as a warning to be taken rationally, and thought over calmly and rationally, and nothing more. I have not yet reached the third point. I look forward to it!

I will add one more thing: 'Vigor, energy, vitality: all the civilizations- or civilizing epochs- have had a weight of energy behind them.' But that energy is a living energy, and like any living energy, it ebbs and flows. Like a great river, sometimes it surges in a great flood of life, and sometimes it waits out its dry season until the rains come again. Like the seasons this life energy, which in the human community can be measured as economic energy, ebbs and flows in great cycles, renews itself, renews itself more effectively if we know how to help it grow. This energy has its winter, its great spring renewal, its golden summer, its fall and back to winter, and its spring of renewal that comes again. Ask the Buddhists. They know. Ask the Taoists, They too know. And if we help it grow, and help it heal, those great cycles of renewal will be stronger, those golden summers last longer, the winters be less harsh. Help it grow. It is measured in economic energy, and is connected to all the processes of civilization, from government to education to the health of our own minds and the strength of the community. We are now, right now, in a massive surge of renewal, but that surge is difficult, for it is yet young, and it is a renewal following the worst crisis in the history of civilization, which took place between 1914 and 1945. The renewal in our age is very complex, and some local parts might be declining even as the whole is growing. In 2024, we look back at a local decline in the last 40 years in America, once the source of the great surge. But at the same time, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania have been reborn. China has been reborn, and continues to grow and heal. The Chinese government is practically boy scouts today compared to what it was in 1965. India is healing, and growing. Japan and South Korea, and the Eupopean Union, lead now, especially Japan and South Korea. India will take the lead real soon, and we can scarcely imagine the wonders that will follow, for India's potential right now is immense beyond imagining. The United States of America yet still contributes. The surge continues to grow, in India, in China, in Indonesia and other places besides. The world is one unit now. America will not be left out.

Great video. But be aware of the danger. The critical weakening blow upon Christian Orthodox Byzantium came from Western Catholic Crusaders in 1204. And there was also fratricide against protestants in the West. A great Warrior Bishop does not allow himself to be goaded into random destruction or a futile war. And that is why I am opposing our involvement in Ukraine, and Taiwan, and Israel (a Western Crusader state which is even more confused than the original, and just as doomed).

I know, right. How bad must Barack Obama have been that the US chose Trump as the next president after him.
