Interstate 777 is coming to North Carolina. Because North Carolina has a lot of auxiliary interstates.

Not at this time, but I have thought about it. Currently, there is a maintenance project on I-26 on the North Carolina side. It shows up on the most recent Google Map street view, so it is still ongoing and probably won't be finished until 2025. The last time I visited I-26 was in the 1990s shortly after the Tennessee section opened. At that time it was signed as US 23 and was intended as a bypass for the original US 23, a winding two-lane road through the mountains. I actually had a chance to drive on the old US 23 going into North Carolina. When the North Carolina section opened after 2000, the roadway became an extension of I-26. I would like to visit the area sometime in the future, but it would probably be after 2025.

Can Interstate 40 meet Interstate 5?

@@kennypalermo9071 Probably not, I-40 was used to be the end at I-15 in Barstow. I-40 did not meet I-5 west of Bakersfield.

Yes, it is intended to connect directly to US 52. Eventually, US 52 between the beltway and Interstate 74 near Mt. Airy will be designated as I-74. In the meantime, It will be interesting to see how the NCDOT configures it for the short term.

There will be auxiliary route of I-74 and it is future I-274 as of west loop around Greensboro North Carolina, and some stretch of future I-274 is under construction.

I think that work on I-73 is finished for now. If I-73 were to be extended to Virginia -- which would require converting existing US 220 to interstate standards -- it probably wouldn't happen until the next decade. IMHO. 🤔

Yes and no. There is a temporary link between NC 74 and US 52 in both directions, but the connection is not finished. In the coming weeks/months?, there will be road closures until the actual link is completed. My guess is that the link won't be fully done until spring, since the contractor can't get much done in the winter. Currently, NC 74 West (beltway "northbound") uses the collector-distributor lane from University Parkway to reach US 52 North. US 52 South connects to NC 74 East (beltway "southbound") using the opposing lane of the beltway. Eventually, the lanes of US 52 to the north of Rural Hall will be reconfigured to connect directly to the beltway. That means that a driver coming from the direction of Mount Airy on US 52 South will naturally enter the beltway (heading "southbound") unless they exit onto US 52 South. If a driver is on NC 74 West approaching Rural Hall (beltway "northbound") they will enter directly onto US 52 North. This arrangement will facilitate future I-74 between the beltway and Mount Airy.

The projected completion is Spring 2027.

All of the flyover ramps are open but construction is still going.

Department of Transportation has reached a significant milestone on the I-40/I-77 interchange project in Iredell County. This morning, all travel lanes in the project limits are open and in their final pattern, about ten days ahead of schedule. The $260 million contract was awarded five years ago this month to Connecticut contractor Lane Construction, Corp. The project includes widening approximately 7.4 miles of both interstates from four lanes to eight lanes, and constructing a partial turbine interchange, initially planned to be flyover ramps. Bridges over I-77 at East Broad Street and Davie Avenue have also been replaced. “This critical phase of the project will improve traffic flow through the interchange and this region," says Division 12 Engineer Mark Stafford. “The original interchange was built back in the 1960s, so we need these improvements to serve drivers for years to come." Though the traffic pattern is in its final configuration, work will be ongoing through spring 2024. Contract crews will complete punch list items and other work restricted by seasonal limitations like installing the final riding surface, final pavement markings and markers, and rumble strips.
