“Chicago’s temperatures in the winter often reach negative digits”. Very incorrect, Chicago only averages four days per year where it gets to zero degrees or below. Please do a little research.

Having lived here for 1/2 a century, I can tell you LA is getting worse and worse…well CA in general. The crime is terrible, taxes are horrific, rent is too high, traffic…let’s not even go there, the homeless situation is unbelievable, etc… Maybe in the 60’s LA was great, but now…nope. You nailed it at the end though. The ONLY reason to be here is that it doesnt get cold and especially because of the beach. THAT is the happy place. If you can battle the traffic and fight for that 1 parking spot left, you will reach the happy place. The only fond memories I have of LA are at the beach (just dont go to Venice, too many homeless). As an avid outdoorswoman, the weather is perfect for that, but the crime can keep you home. Sad. Try Griffith Park hiking trails. They also have night hike groups. Good luck kid. Too bad we cant turn back time in LA.

L.A. is a paradox, the good and the bad. How it balances out depends on the person. There is always risk. The freeways suck, the weather is mostly great. Too many homeless and crime is noticeably active. L.A. has changed since 2020, not for the better. Oh did I mention the weather ? The real La La Land ? Evolving into a John Carpenter movie. However, for some determined people a slice of the Cali dream may still exist, for others a Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

Oh my dude.... the Kook is beloved for the defacement value. Locals are generally not kooks, or only for a short time as children. 'Decorating' the Kook is a coming of age act, or just fun on a weekend night. Kook sits in front of the San Elijo Campgrounds, which, with the exception of Cardiff Reef, Barneys, and Pipes surf spots... is definitely a safespace for kooks to learn surfing. Swamis is one of two or three spots in SD that can hold 20ft+ waves, no kooks there please, or at any spots north of Moonlight Beach, which will all remain unnamed here.

Ah Los Angeles, like New York another Democrat run city and now mega shit hole! I spent 64 of my seventy years in SoCal, 26 years were in Orange County where I grew up and the remaining 38 in North Hollywood after getting married. While there have always been crappy parts of LA and even Orange County they are nothing like today. In the early 60’s my parents used to drive into LA from OC to shop at the large department stores and it was truly magical as a child visiting these stores that dated from the 1920’s and 30’s with the beautiful wood paneling and marble floors. It was hard to imagine better place to live. Unfortunately now both OC and LA have turned into social dung heaps with the influx of homeless, which the Democrats seem to encourage with their free handouts and the total lack of enforcement of regulations to keep riff raff from setting up shop where ever they please. I spent the last twenty five years of my career working for the railroads in the LA area and the increase in the homeless encampments along the railroad right of way was very dramatic in the last couple of years, the only good thing was that occasionally a passing train would clean up some of the problem when some poor drug addled soul would wander onto the tracks and get reduced to hamburger. There has also been a drastic increase in vandalism of signal equipment along the tracks by homeless zombies looking to score some metal to take to the local recycling center to get more drug money. We finally had enough and sold out in April of 2021 and moved to a state where at least some social behavior standards are enforced. Two months after we sold our house Mayor Garshitti installed 100 tiny homes on Saticoy Street and our old neighborhood has turned in to zombie central.

Speaking as a third generation Los Angeleno, the Westside is the only place I would consider. I grew up in the Beverly Grove area, moved to Santa Monica and then Beverly Hills for a while and finally bought in Mar Vista 30 years ago. I have seen a lot of change. Much of it not for the better. One constant is that visiting other parts of LA still makes me appreciate the Westside.

I was an older teen in the late 70s and lived in a small LA suburb not too far from Hollywood. Almost every Saturday night, my friends and I would drive to Hollywood to catch a movie and just hang out. At the time to us, Hollywood Blvd had an air of excitement to it, much different to the quiet town we lived in. Were we just too "young and dumb" to be aware of any dangers that might be lurking on the streets? Or was it really not that bad? I don't know, but we had fun.

I'm glad all of the commenters love Chicago food, but after being downtown a decade (and suburbs since birth) I have to disagree. Nothing beats NYC authenticity and LA food is fantastic as well, especially if you like Asian food. I think our green spaces and having 2 airports connected via train to our city are some of the best perks. Summertime Chi is never boring.
