The Story of Bakelite
By the 1920’s, inventor Leo Baekeland’s Bakelite was being used around the world in all manner of industrial and consumer products. As part of Baekeland’s General Bakelite Company publicity campaign, author John Kimberly Mumford (1863-1926) was commissioned to write, “The Story of Bakelite” published by Robert L. Stillson Co. Color Printers, New York City in 1924. It remains today a fascinating look into the creative marketing of Bakelite and a window into early 20th Century industrial America.
The Connecticut-based actor John Edward McDonough (1954 - 2021) reads selections from the book. “The Story of Bakelite” was one of McDonough’s last performances. He had a distinguished career performing on national television and on NPR’s Prairie Home Companion. He was a longtime member of the Hartford Stage Company, Co-Founder of The Company One Theatre, and the narrator at many Hartford Symphony concerts. His distinctive voice is familiar to many as the reader of popular audiobooks.
Also living in Connecticut, director John Maher, film editor Craig Mikhitarian and composer Marty Fegy collaborated to bring the reading to life. Marty’s wife, Louise Acker gives the introduction.

Dear Dicki: What a grand surprise to find you in full technicolor (again), reading about Bon Bon with memories of her in Yonkers and at Camp along with photos of your teen years at Camp. I loved seeing Bon Bon's paintings and video of her as a healthy and classic hostess of our prime pre-war memories of Camp. I wish you had included the color photo of the full length painting of Bon Bon overlooking the living room - so majestic. I took the photo several years ago and sent copies to you and your cousins. We lived in Scarsdale across the street from St. James the Less where your wedding to Gerry in 1939 was the first wedding I attended. My mother El was a big fan and friend of dear Tiss. I sent you a birthday card on your 100th birthday. I hope you received it. Love, Bruce Walker (88) in San Francisco Nov.16, 2020

Fascinating! Thank You. Does Nancy Byck have any recollections of L.V. Redman? hoping to learn details of the transparent red phenolic as seen in examples Nancy shows in the film. Redman held a patent for "Redmanol", which is still highly regarded for its qualities in his early pipe-stems, pre-dating his joining Bakelite as research chemist. Wondering if Redman was responsible for what's known as cherry-amber Bakelite? or contributed to refining Bakelite's transparent red - early pieces said to be brittle - while still quietly holding patent to his product? When will the full film be available for the public to view?
