    im thinking about building a 8w x 12L shed out of cord wood. walls would be 6ft high and to the pitch would be a total of 8. how much material would i need for this project. and do you strip the bark off of your wood or can i leave it on there?

    • @bobbobson4607
      @bobbobson4607 Před 2 lety

      I can't tell you how much you need, but I can tell you to strip the bark and get the cambion layer under it off the wood too. If you don't you'll be inviting insects and fungi's.

    • @CordwoodConstruction20
      @CordwoodConstruction20 Před 2 lety

      Take the bark off as soon as possible when it is in 8 foot lengths. calculate th sqare footage of your walls. Divide by 32 and the number you get is the number of single cords you need. 100 sq. ft. of wall ='s 3 single cords (8' x 4' x 16").

    I have white oak , Virginia red cedar , and Texas Elm , does the wood have to be dry , or can you use green wood. E, Texas

    • @CordwoodConstruction20
      @CordwoodConstruction20 Před 3 lety

      The wood needs to be dry to 12% moisture content. The best wood for cordwood is softwood. So the cedar would work well.

    I just wonder if it is a good idea to fill the insulation gap with recycled polystyrene. There is plenty around me, just should collect from the warehouse. That is resistant to worms too. The logs I can tread with borax, but the insulating sawdust?

    • @CordwoodConstruction20
      @CordwoodConstruction20 Před 3 lety

      If you could shred the recycled polystrene so it is in tiny bits, that would work the best. The sawdust is treated with Type S hydrated lime. Some folks have also added borax to the insulation mix.

      @@CordwoodConstruction20 Thank you, perfect!! For first glance it might look a strange idea to mix this classic green building technic with a modern artificial insulation material. However, I think that at the end, upcycling polystyrene instead of treating it as garbage is quite green and economical. I hope gridding polystyrene into black pepper size is not a big deal. I will find the solution for sure to have my dream home.
