Custom 38mm Avionics Bay for Featherweight GPS Tracker
Carson designed a new 38mm rocket designed for a long burn on F10 motors. Given the small size of the rocket, an estimated apogee near 1K meters, and single parachute deployment, the chances of keeping eyes on this thing are relatively low. To help with recovery, we’re using a Featherweight GPS tracker, mounted in the available space in the nose cone, which also helps with aerodynamic stability. Carson designed a custom 3D-printed sled to carry the tracker and battery. It uses a threaded insert in the nose cone for easy and secure mounting.

Adding another installment in this series. The first two surprised me with the number of views received. I share a quick update on our 2020 Kia Telluride EX, Wilco Hitchgate Solo, and Thule cargo carrier. How it has worked out over the years and four trips to Death Valley NP.

I posted a video last year about our new Telluride and the inaugural trip to Death Valley. That got a lot more views than expected, so I guess it was helpful for some people. Adding an update one year later, with a couple of updates that may be interesting. Take care.

Overview of the Wilco Offroad Hitchgate Solo (High-Clearance) spare tire carrier installed on a 2020 Kia Telluride. Includes two RotoPax fuel canisters and the license plate kit. I thought this might be helpful for people trying to understand the fit for this combination.

360 tour from the top of Elephants Back near Carson Pass, which is about 30 minutes south of Lake Tahoe. The mountain is 9,585' (2,922m) and is located in the Mokelumne Wilderness in Eldorado National Forest. More details here: www.summitpost.org/elephants-back/337629 Corrections from my voiceover: The knobby peak to the northeast is Hawkins Peak, not Jeff Davis peak.

Adding to the library of videos about the 2020 Kia Telluride, but adding a few details about our experience with a 1,200 mile road trip to Death Valley. Details about what we did with the wheels and the temporary rack system. Definitely check out the Primal Outdoors channel for excellent, long-form videos about using the Kia Telluride for overland travel. The rack system is a temporary solution...

Giving gravity a high-five in the Marin Headlands. This is the most beautiful descent I know, but with an 18% grade you need to trust your brakes. (from Dec, 2016)

Awesome stuff guys! definitely wanna see some launches
Thanks for the Video, I put a Solo High Clearance on my truck, but was curious about how the Plate relocate panel looked etc. Looks good to me!
Hi, nice video. By the way what’s the brand of your roof cross bar?
Those are the OEM Kia crossbars. They stand pretty high, but neither Thule/Yakima/Rhino had fit kits for the Telluride when we bought it. If we were to do it again, we go with one of those to be a little more low-profile. But the OEM ones work fine.
Does the tailgate stop automatically if you try and open it with the spare tire hitch
Can you open the lift gate when the wheel carrier is closed position? If not, whst happens if you accuse you hit the ‘open tailgate’ button, does it stop or will it break trying to open?
No, you can't open the lift gate with the carrier closed. I think if you accidentally opened the lift gate, it would hit the carrier and then close again (depending on the vehicle). I haven't done that yet, and don't plan to try it out 🙂
Did you consider any other tires?
What size Cargo Box did you end up going with?
Finally, I agree smaller tires are better
Do you have self leveling rear susp?
Hello Matt, do your Telluride has self levering? If so, how does work?
Nope, no self-leveling on the Telluride.
What size is the cargo box? Is it the L (16cubic) or the XL (18 cubic) version?
We went with the Thule Motion XT XL Roof Box. It fits a lot of gear, including my long-ish 190cm skis.
Matt, is that spare tire your second spare? You still have the one under the trunk?
Yes, this is an additional spare, though it's the one I would use first if needed.
Super helpful!! Thanks for the video!
Looks amazing but totally worthless as an AWD or 4x4. This doesn't even have 4 low gearing...or downhill decent assist so you are dead coming down a steep hill on ice and snow... so don't think about driving this to ski resort in a real storm. Believe me I live on a mountain peak and 4 low has saved my life endless times. At least the palisade, pathfinder, forerunner, Taureg, etc. have either low gearing or downhill decent assist control. But most people see AWD and think they are good to go... but they are clueless. This is a beautiful vehicle though if you are just looking for a city street SUV that looks cool and runs well...
Thanks. Good to see the side view for clearance. I need to have the same modularity. The vehicle must transform from offroad vacamobile to grocery getter. So no crazy Arb bumpers.
Looks great. Can you confirm the part # for the hitchgate?
Kia aren't good cars man it's new so it's gonna be nice for a while sell it before 100,000 miles
KIA Killed In Action
I'm very happy your Kia Telluride is working out for you in your family. I've had my Kia Telluride 1 year now as of January 2021. It is not a Flawless vehicle but I've enjoyed every minute of it. God bless stay safe.
please make car drive video of kia telluride please
Such a dope vehicle. Wish it came with a little more ground clearance stock. Kia did a really great job. Glad you’re enjoying it.
Kia's got to offer an offroad version of the Telluride, for people who like to go, not rock crawling, but off the beaten path now and then.
Could you show us how it performs in deep soft sand
Awesome looking to do the same shortly
Going to the dealer to purchase a Telluride tomorrow if the deal is right. Looking forward to seeing more modifications.
Can I know where you ordered it from? Thank you
This is cool man, I got a 100 series and I love seeing different rig off-road looking forward to more videos
How long did it take to get the hitch from Wilco? Appears they are at least 2-3 weeks behind on orders. Looks like a nice set-up. Thanks!
My wife and i have the 18 outback and need a bigger vehicle for the growing familly. Took a 2021 telluride out and wow we were thoroughly impressed with it. We are considering buying one with all the features you get in the kia there is no comparison on the market.
Thanks for the review, doing more Overlanding with the family and have been looking for a tire carrier that will support my new wheel and tire package, with options for spare fuel. Think I'm giving this one a try. Subbed, keep em coming.
Do you have lock nuts on your spare, just asking as i'm looking into the high clearance as well ?
Have an SX in Dark Moss. Will be dropping down to the 18's as well. Have been considering the Continentals. How are you liking that combination?
It's been a good combination so far. I was a little concerned about road noise when we moved to an A/T tire, but it hasn't been an issue for us. Still very happy with our choice.
Hello what is the size tire you used??

Like those wheels. What width and offset?
Great video! Any mechanical or electrical issues during your ownership?
