Arguably one of the most profound ways in which Sir Robert Menzies shaped modern Australian was by helping to lift homeownership rates from 53% to 71%. Defying a Labor Party that decried the creation of ‘little capitalists’ Menzies forged a property owning democracy where the middle class he championed grew so large that Labor had to reorientate itself to court its votes. But since the 1960s, g...

WOW., I have read 0rwell "1984" huxleys "brave new world", These are my two go to references, What we experienced through C19 times is what has been brewing since these books have been written. There has been many books and films based loosely about this subject. Yes there have been film made with the same tiltle as these books yet there are many that have very different titles yet are the same subject "Hunger games" just to name one. I totally agree with this presentation as a society we have been blindly pushed to be lemmings. Thanks for this presentation and a well thought out facts.

Robert Gordon Menzies would be called a “leftie” by current Liberals. He gave us Commonwealth Undergraduate University Scholarships, years before Whitlam. He provided Science Labs for Catholic High Schools. Tax rates for high earners were twice those today. He saw education as a sovereign investment in Australia. Since then, we have turned into a quarry controlled by multinational companies who take all the profits overseas. Howard, Abbott and Morrison did this, at the direction of the IPA and Murdoch.

Jonathan Sumption and Thomas Sowell. One British, one American. They have extraordinary and clear minds and both are exceptionally brave. They challenge the powerful elites in their respective countries, and using only their intellect and their humanity are able to expose the shallow and crude lust for power among those who seek election. high office, and power over us. Both are despised and feared by the elites, but loved by ordinary people needing explanations for our current travails. Neither advance solutions, but I hope they both continue to apply their great minds to identifying the forces at work that are undermining Western democracy. Thank you Lord Sumption, thank you Professor Sowell!

An excellent paper. Regarding that key issue of balancing national security imperatives and civil liberty concerns, one could reasonably infer from your paper that in 1950-51, Menzies got the balance wrong. The Communist Party Dissolution Bill was, in large measure, modelled on the Smith Act in the US. Both were excessively draconian.
