Because the engine in our plane was still being overhauled we weren't certain we would be able to make the show. But thanks to the generosity of friends and a last minute change in aircraft, we were able to make the flight from Oklahoma to Oshkosh for AirVenture 2023. Even though it was a different plane, last minute change of plans, and head winds to and from OSH, we still had a great time and...

@@skylarpihl6475 we just landed! So yes!

Great job, good radio calls!
Entertaining.
My friends and I are often looking for new destinations for lunch. Sure would have appreciated some shots of the restaurant, comments on the food, menu, etc. Thanks!!
Catch a fish. They shouldn't let you depart till you catch an 18" rainbow.
An old guy trick to mitigate turbulence is to use rudder only to level the wing. When a wing drops and we startle and use aileron only or do not lead rudder to bring it back up, the nose yaws first before rudder we apply rudder. Step on the ball is a late fix and things get rough. What is moderate turbulence to aileron users is light turbulence to rudder only users. This rudder, correct yaw rather than adverse yaw, technique is especially helpful on short final (especially through trees). As with gusts at altitude, we do not want to turn and thus need absolutely no aileron. Dynamic proactive rudder to nail the centerline (straight line) will speed a wing a bit but will not cause the wing wagging of aileron usage. I consider 24 a no go around runway. Since full flaps and power/pitch deceleration coming into high ground effect is default for me, touching down very early (even using soft field technique) is no problem. Go around can be very dangerous here going into higher terrain and trees and dam. Considering terrain and trees, I also consider only one way out...down drainage (again generally default.) Another default, very useful here, is the basic level in low ground effect takeoff (think soft field technique which is generally the best short field technique because of the free ground effect energy. The bluff is tall, but level in low ground effect we can easily be at cruise airspeed by the end of the runway. Neither Vx or Vy is appropriate on long runways because they both forfeit free ground effect energy. When low, where airspeed and not altitude is life, zoom reserve airspeed or maneuvering airspeed makes the outcome of the maneuver far less in doubt as do Vx or Vy energy state. Turn down drainage over the wire rather than try to outclimb terrain (the bluff.) Maneuvering airspeed will make this comfortable and safe.
I'm based at KBPK, right beside Gastons. Please everyone monitor 123.00 on your second radio because, KFLP, KBPK, and the Valley are all on that frequency and for some stupid reason Gaston's on its own frequency and there have been lots of near misses. With that being said, Gastons always fun to land at, but guess since fly over it all the time I take it for granted!
That’s solid advice from a local! It’s a good idea to at least monitor the airports you’re operating around and definitely keep an eye out for traffic. Those two are super close to each other!
@@CaptScafe its 6 miles between FLP and BPK on pretty much same heading 23/22 Rwys and then valley is right between, then throw in Gastons which people will leave and cut right down the middle in bases and crosswind for both airports and be on 122.8 instead of 123... makes interesting around here for sure. Gotta keep your eyes open!! But def love buzzing in there once in awhile.
Just starting my tail wheel training. Super excited to learn it!
Good luck!

Love your channel. You have the camera angles perfect.
Thanks! It's a work in progress for sure.
Awesome video. Hey I'm looking into buying the headset she's wearing. Is it clarity aloft and do the ear pieces have to get replaced from time to time?
They are QT Halo's and are similar to the clarity aloft, just less expensive. But yes, the ear pieces have to be replaced periodically. The headset comes with several options for ear pieces to best fit you and replacement ones are very affordable.
Another great video, a tail dragger too! Keep up the awesome work. Can I ask, the earplug type headphones you 2ic wears, do they have noise supp or is it just "put up with the noise"?
She uses the Quiet Technologies Halo. They are essentially ear plugs instead of traditional ear cups like most other headsets.

Merry Christmas, happy flying!
Thanks! You too!
Watching your flying and enjoy the interaction with the co-pilot so important. 80 now to old to fly, but the desire is still there. Thank you young pilots for making the time to post your flights.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
The best approach to Oshkosh on the net. Very intense and well flown and the co-pilot did a great job making sure your flight was cleared of other aircraft, great job.
Thanks! It's nice having a second set of eyes looking for traffic!

Just found your channel and enjoy the flying and might add no music makes these a great ride along video. Thank you for sharing your flying life with us. Got my PPL in 1973 and did fly into the 1990's but a heart attack and a triple bypass ended my flying now 80 but have not lost the desire to fly. Looking at the Areo light 103 as a way to get back in the sky, maybe just to old? Or forever young?
I think forever young. As long as you can still drag the plane out and see where you're going then maybe the 103 is a good way to go.
Pure flying and no music make your videos more pure and enjoyable thank you. Will your co-pilot get her pilot license some day or is she already qualified. That would be great.
She doesn't have her certificate yet but it wouldn't be too difficult a task for her. Maybe someday.
The lack of shitty music made this video a joy to watch, thank you!
I subscribed because of that
@@ohwell2790Me too.
Thanks for watching! I like making videos that show the actual flying/audio instead of a flying montage to music.
Very nice! 👏 Great landing!😮 Good to see another video from you two! See you in the next one! 👍

Nice video. You guys have inspired me a lot. Family and I have done a few nice breakfast runs in So Cal area. 2 months ago we bought a C150J. Owning a plane is awesome.
Thanks for watching! Owning a plane is very rewarding at times. Other times it can be a real pain but it's definitely worth it!
@CaptScafe That's what I am afraid of. I paid 30k for it. Needed a transponder and IFR capability, so invested 16k for the avionics and estimated another 7k for other stuff. It's been in the shop for 8 weeks, and so I'm getting anxious to finally fly it.
Just a simple GO POKES! Enjoy your videos, from a former Flying Aggie.
Thanks for watching!
Is that a fresh paint job? I don't remember it being so shinny! Nice!
It was last painted in 2009 so it's not exactly "fresh" but I do my best to keep it clean. It was also down for 8 months waiting for an engine so I had plenty of time to keep it polished.
Hello neighbor. I fly out of DJ Perry. Enjoy your videos, but they would be even more interesting if you include activities at your destinations and a little less XC cockpit pics. Show us the other planes and interesting people at PNC. How about the food? Destination videos will help to encourage me and others to want to go there too. Keep up the good work. See you at the monthly fly-in breakfasts at 1K4.
That's good feedback! Thanks!
Very nice!👏👏🎉
I've made that exact flight! That's always a fun approach. Nicely done.
It was extra fun on this day thanks to the wind! Next time we'll pick a day that isn't quite as bumpy.
Thanks for all your sharing over the years
Thanks for watching!
Just got woken up by these obnoxiously loud planes on a Saturday morning. Why would you fly over suburban neighborhoods?
We taxied for THREE HOURS from 0805 till 1115 from the south 40 to depart in 27L
Unfortunately, I've heard a lot of people say the same thing. Just good (or bad) timing with so many trying to get out at once.
Can you get fuel at OSH before you depart?
Yes, fuel is available at OSH. But it takes a bit of planning because it's not likely you'll get it right when you order it. Usually, you order fuel and it shows up sometime in the next few hours when they finally make it around to where you are parked.
@CaptScafe That's good to know. Not sure when I'll have the courage to go to OSH but it us definitely a bucket list item.
@@Low-N-Slow Absolutely, we started with full tanks. But after three hours of taxiing, I am glad I only had to fly to Lake in the Hills (3CK) for my next stop.
Very cool, thanks! What headset is your co-pilot wearing?
She’s wearing the Quiet Technologies Halo.
Who are these idiots who keep stepping on FISK frequency?
Nice job and nice video as usual. Thanks for sharing!

@@CaptScafeThat thing is nuts! 🤯
What day did you arrive? I was there Sun-Sun. I hope to meet you both one of these years.
We arrived Friday evening and left Thursday morning.
@@CaptScafe Nice arrival!
If you guys are coming to the WR fly-in this year (this coming Sat) and need a place to stay in Claremore, just let me know. I am one of your subscribers.
Thanks! I'm not sure if we will make it this year or not. Still waiting on our engine to get back from overhaul.
I too fly out of 1k4 and enjoy your local destinations but it would be more interesting if you show points of interest at your destination: Where did you have breakfast? How was the restaurant and food? How about the marina at Cedar Mills, cabins for rent, etc. Less of XC flying, instrument panel, etc. and more of why you went there and what you liked about the destination. Thanks! Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the feedback! Maybe someday I'll take the camera with me when we go places outside the plane.
Did you sell 79879?
Definitely not! The engine is being overhauled at the moment and being upgraded to 160hp. But it's taking longer than planned (part shortages, shop delays...etc). So I've been flying in other airplanes to stay current and proficient.
@@CaptScafe Ahh nice, I think when you bought it it had something like 1000 hours or so on it. When I bought it it was 800 hrs. Did it make full TBO or did it start making metal?
Nothing really wrong with the engine when I pulled it at just over 2200hrs. I could tell it was tired but it wasn't making metal. We just decided not to push our luck and we wanted to upgrade engine/prop to get back (or gain) some speed without sacrificing takeoff/climb performance.
@@CaptScafe That is good news. I know Mike Bush says run them until they tell you to stop, but I wondered how long she would go. The guy who owned her before me over in Ohio only flew like 10 hrs a year and he owned her for 10 years or so. I think you made the right call. Enjoy the new engine and prop. Mike
Thanks! We look forward to the upgrade and it shouldn't be too much longer before we can start flying 879 again!
Niiice!🎉
