Taken from 'Inglorious Revolutions II: Act of Union'. The Union occurred against a backdrop of European dynastic wars, English economic repression and, partly as a result of the above, Scotland’s abject impoverishment. But the bankrupting of Scotland was not solely the result of decades of royal neglect or hostile English trade policies. Like the Union itself, the final nail in the coffin of Sc...

Anglo Saxons? Nothing to do with the Highlands...you mean Scots and Picts?
I think you misunderstand. Scots - Anglo-Saxons- were in the Lowlands; the south east of Scotland which became Alba. The “Highlanders” of this age were, as far as we know, Pictii. There is no conclusive evidence to make unqualified statements about who was where so long ago. We can theorise, but not state as fact.
@@UtopiaPlanitiaStudios No, I absolutely understand who the Scots were in that era, I have nearly every book written on the topic😬 The Scots and Picts united to create the kingdom of Alba with Strathclyde as a sub kingdom and Deira having shifting boundaries to the south.
@viking_training_system Right, so what's the objection? At no point do I say there were anglo saxons in the Scottish Highlands.
@@UtopiaPlanitiaStudios You stated the kingdom of Alba was created by the Picts and Angles.
@@UtopiaPlanitiaStudios I suggest you read From Pictland to Alba by Alex Woolfe for starters. Also, the Pictish kingdoms were focused in Angus, Fife and Moray.

I've heard to this day at Clan Gatherings here in CALIFORNIA "Never trust a Campbell".
I mean, it may have been a fair rule of thumb back in the day, but I think it's probably best consigned to history. There's enough division in the world without perpetuating arcane, irrelevant prejudices.
Nice one Sam. Your a master at alternative routes to these high places! Watched your videos for a long time now and still think these munro adventures are the best!! Paul

They made their own a thousand years prior. Besides, even in the depths of starvation, they probably wouldn't have considered it edible.

descended to Hidden Valley yesterday... An idea of doing it in Winter feel RIDICCULOUS! I did two winter ascents of the easiest Munros (Ben More, Stob Binnein) and I promised myself to NEVER DO THIS AGAIN. Had some close calls in low visibility as well. Conclusion: I will only climb Munros when it's nice weather, clear skies.
Yeah time and again folk underestimate the ferocity and severe challenges of winter on the Munros. When it's bad you may as well be in the Alps. I watched two people downclimbing into the Lost Valley in spring last year when there was plenty of snow left - hard, windblasted snow prone to avalanche - WITHOUT CRAMPONS OR AN ICE AXE. Absolutely mind-bogglingly stupid and irresponsible behaviour. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. By dumb luck they made it down...just. You're absolutely right, if unsure or especially if you don't enjoy it, it's definitely better sticking to the more clement seasons!
@@UtopiaPlanitiaStudios downclimb there without crampons in Winter??? That's just plain stupid!
Awesome man. Lost world climb is a classic. Met him in 1994 alongside Chris Bonnington at Glencoe just before climbing Ben Nevis in a winter storm. Didn't appreciate it as much at the time, but it slowly catches on. I did not know that he climbed in Caucasus. Could have had a great time just like we did with Chris.

My 13th great grandfather was James MacDonnell, brother of Sorley Boy. We ended up in the American colonies. So much pain. Even my dad shared in the pain of being of this lineage. So much lost. Just heartbreaking. Pain doesn’t stop because your family is relocated. Again, absolutely heartbreaking. Never home. We can never go home
Criminally under-rated amount of views for the sheer production quality
Beware the weather. Started up Bidean nam Bian (this was 45 years ago) in pleasant weather. Around 40 minutes in and the fog/cloud came down, fast. Socked in. Got a bit lost, came down to Hidden Valley. It was like Gormenghast with the fog and the moss on the rocks. Utterly magic, but make sure you have the kit; Bidean can bite.
MacDonald here, from Sunderland, im guessing some of my ancestors settled here during the civil war when the Scots were fighting the royalists
Just a quick point on the semantics here as I know it's confusing. In Scotland, Royalists were mostly Scots (English-speaking Lowlanders: 'Albannaich' in Gaelic). The Gaels (Highlanders) were the traditional opponents of the Crown. This changed in the early modern era when the 'wrong' king - William of Orange - displaced James VII, whose supporters -Jacobites - included many Gaels; indeed, the Jacobite army at Killiecrankie was predominantly comprised of Highlanders. But yes, it's quite possible your ancestors were forcibly relocated from their Highland territory as part of the Highland Clearances.
the outer wilds theme tune was a surprise 😂
Great video thanks for sharing. The ‘MacDonalds’ viewing this video will love this wee true story; Alastair Campbell, the very twisted & hated Spin Doctor of PM Teflon Tony Blair, you know the British Prime Minister that ordered the invasion of Iraq, murdering millions of innocent people. Well, Alastair Campbell was chucked out the Clachiag Inn, Glencoe. Where there’s a Sign over the Door; ‘No Hawkers or Campbells’ I’m from the West Highlands, a Presbyterian loyal to the Court of St James & our British Royal Family. This is the most in depth account of the Glen Coe massacre I have ever heard, and I say thanks for the research and posting. One only has to visit the area briefly, to get a hint of the atmosphere; which I have more than once. I would recommend this and the dramatised version, featuring James Robertson Justice..
I should add the viking families in the Macdonald family go back to Antiochus the first antichrist in the book of Daniel.. its a crazy history them vikings had

Well worth the wait. Informative, insightful and entertaining. More detail than I’ve seen anywhere else on Darien which was an unexpected bonus, albeit quite a bleak and sobering chapter in our history. Kudos Sam, love your work and you deserve a much bigger audience.
That's extremely kind of you, thanks. It's good to hear Darien hit as intended, it wasn't pleasant to research but a key part of getting at why the Union occurred. It's just really sad. The unforgivable decision to send a second expedition was at least a case of corporate manslaughter.
@@UtopiaPlanitiaStudios Darien is just a tragic saga in our history. Poorly represented and exploited by the union driving the misguided attempt to develop our own colony and break the reliance on the oppressors. The second colony attempt was a desperate act of hubris, but that doesn’t excuse the tragic negligence of the outcome and the ironic impact it had on strengthening the union.

I think there are some bias around the glorious revolution. Although as said it wasn’t excepted as a whole but the GR was the nail in the coffin of monarch absolutism and the start of parliamentary supremacy which I think was ultimately a good thing
Thanks for watching and for your excellent comment. The progress made in the 1689 Bill of Rights - primacy of legislature over the executive- was definitely a good thing. The whole faux-invasion thing is what we’re ridiculing: William was forced to accept being constrained by Parliament to his great frustration. As mentioned in the film, the ideas the Jacobites espoused were on the wrong side of history. This progressive movement towards more democratic ways of government is expanded upon in Inglorious Revolutions: Act of Union which just went up last week. :)

What?
6:00 - I don't think that is a fair summary of the Reformation. Talking about indulgences as "catholic tradition" is like talking about whoremongering as a catholic tradition just because some popes whored. You might have as well talked about the "inherent racism of protestantism", which would actually have more of a doctrinary basis if we were to judge by Luther's own writings. You could have just talked about "papal corruption" or something that didn't sound like a manichean good vs evil reductionism. Also, no, indulgences do not get people into heaven, they do not exempt people from their sins. 16:42 - In this case it might be true for some contemporary perceptions, but we should be careful not to pass it as ageneral rule. You could, for instance, ask the very much Catholic enactors of the Spanish Constitution of 1812 if they were pro-authoritarianism or pro-democracy, or to all those many historians who see a direct link between Lutheranism and Nazism. And you can tell the many Protestant believers in predetermination if they have "more agency and intelligence of their own" than the many Catholics who believe in free will. 24:04 - Spain was still the 2nd global power, definitely ahead of England and the Netherlands. The myth of Spanish decadence in the 2nd half of the XVII century has long been debunked. Spain had lost its hegemonic position, not its great power status.
Fair points
The darien disaster that England started deliberately to sign up to this fraud of uk
Not really. As the film explains, the Darien scheme was created by Scots with William’s encouragement.
Summit is a noun not a verb!
I think you’ll find the mountaineering community may disagree with you on that; it can be both.
I am a McDonald. My father’s DNA shows that we descended from Somerled. However, there are a lot of gaps that I would love to fill . My 5th great grandfather was Capt John McDonald born in 1742 . He fought in the Revolutionary war. Capt John Mc. Arrived ( with Cherokee Indians) at Abaco Bahamas after the war in 1783. He settled there in a place now known as Cherokee Sound. That information is confirmed with historical record. I suspect that Capt John’s father and grandfather were both named Alexander MacDonald . The only sure record I have is from an interview with John McDonald - Magistrate & School master of Cherokee Sound, who stated that his grandfather was a Loyalist soldier, and his great grandfather a ship builder in the river Clyde. I’d LOVE to know more about
Really interesting. Would love to hear more of these folk’s stories.
“ Warring Picts and Anglo Saxons united in defence “ ? 1500 hundred years ago the Anglo Saxons had been settling Northumbria from what’s now Edinburgh down the East coast for a mere 50 years, they were no where near the Western Isles ? and “when Scotland was inhabited by Picts and Anglo Saxon tribes” there were two wave of invasion? the Anglo Saxon were the invaders and what about the native Brythonic Briton’s who inhabited the west coast of Scotland from Dumbarton castle all the way down to Wales at the time, no mention? The historical inaccuracy’s in the first 5 minutes set a tone of fiction to come !
Coming in hot there chief. What you call historical inaccuracies are legitimate academic theories for which there is evidence both for and against. Hence the “Lively academic debate”, this is a contested subject. We are all contributing to the debate.
@@UtopiaPlanitiaStudios Takes a stretch of the imagination to think of the Anglo Saxons coming up to the western isles to join forces with the Picts to fight the Vikings thus forming Scotland no matter what academic theories you follow, just saying !🏴
