This is the third B-1 accident where aircrew discipline was the main factor. Hell yes it matters when the crew didn’t have gloves or helmet or was overweight and flew a destabilized approach. This speaks to attention to detail and following regulations and tech orders that are mostly written in blood because of prior accidents or incidents. Bombers are national assets because of their strategic importance and their cost especially when you look at replacement cost. These assets are controlled by treaty. Also for the bomber crew force there is no appreciable difference in ability between an FTU instructor versus a squadron IP. A great deal of upgrade and currency training occurs at the squadron level. Squadron IPs are the main muscle and bone of the crew force tasked with training and safety. They are tasked by the OG to insure safety of flight and given full authority to insist on proper procedures and adherence to regulations. Bottom line the IP is held responsible for the safety of the flight.

Wombat hit the nail on the head…the AIB President was trying to make a statement. You can’t just comment on the Mishap Crew’s performance, because another crew landed safely; that shows a crew problem, not a community problem. It doesn’t matter what community you’re from in the Air Force, SORTS/DRRS runs promotions. If Sq/CC’s aren’t going to report the truth, then their people are going to “make the mission happen.” Then everyone gets promoted, because we are all “suddenly” GREEN on currencies, especially right before a deployment. Hence, Gonky’s comment about, “Eight X’s on one sortie.”

I was the point of contact with the CF-18 team for an airshow in 2015. “Cheech” was the pilot, but most of my work was with the maintainers. It was a privilege and a real pleasure - what a great bunch of people!

I saw the CAF at Oshkosh this year and they were very impressive!

That take off to almost straight vertical was jaw dropping, good heavens!

The Qatari F-15QA (the base for F-15EX) demo is really cool too, video of that is on that same channel. There's actually a couple there from different days, the second one is better because the cloudy skies give more reference to appreciate the incredible manoeuvrability. RIAT is a great show, wasn't there this year but have been many times in the past. USAF presence in recent years has been very sparse compared to what it used to be though which is a shame, although the Friday this year did have a U-2S role demo as well as one fully kitted-out returning from a real-world mission.

I used to listen to Tim on the UHF radio training pilots over north Wales running GCI and intercepts. Thanks for the pod, guys.

Many comments have been made about the paint scheme for the 100th Anniversary of the RCAF Demo Hornet. It is almost impossible to tell based on the video that you showed, but one of the things that the CF18 is known for is the "False Canopy" on the bottom of the jet. This year's Demo bird has the official RCAF Tartan as the False Canopy. If you see it in good light, it is very cool!

one of Canada's most recent paint schemes involved an eagle. a year later, we selected the f35. the f15 not being an option was political. yah... whatever.

The CF-18 demo is always a crowd pleaser on the ground and in the air. Elaborate livery changes regularly for that year's celebratory milestone. The flight demo is on par with the US Navy F-18 and EA-18G demos; however, the Canadians seem to execute more high speed passes. BTW, the CF-18s have a floodlight on the side of the fuselage. Canadian pilot said its for spotlighting "Bears" (Tu-95).

I got to see the Tiger Stripped RCAF plane at the Salinas, California Air Show a couple decades ago. I'll have to root through my photos and see if his flaps were down on the take off. The pilot explained that the landing light near the pilot's knee was not for cross wind landings at night.
