Its a funny thing that they do ask for data structures however my own insight is that they hire to show you can make it a long way up the software chain in where some of these data structures likely play a role. I'm not entirely speaking from experience so take it with a grain of salt, I was always struggling to figure out how some of these top end engineers made it and I do think it was related to their projects they were doing and their experience with mathematics which related to AI and I am sure more up the software chain. Hiring managers are playing for the safest bets I'm sure as well.

I found leetcode pretty helpful for keeping skills up while I was looking. The industry is in a really tough spot. Especially since I was moonlighting as a PO before I was laid off. We're competing with sometimes over a thousand people for the same position. It's wild. I remember getting disheartened when I'd go to apply on LI and see the see how you compare to the 853 other applicants. This gives companies major leverage. That being said, I absolutely hate the over-the-shoulder/paired programming interviews where you have to share your screen and the interview manager is watching me write code. I much prefer the ones where you're doing code review and they're asking you how you would refactor what mistakes you find.

I think is normal to have many different ambition but not really moving . In the end you still applying to jobs in you industry. Is hard to be multitasking. This indecision definitely make you waste time but I say sometime is in these moments that we feel more alive. Normally we identify in the job/routine, it's easy. When we are unemployed and question everything we don't identify only in the past but we listen to our inner child and that's elevated our sense of being. In the long rum is hard to handle because we seek security and stability inside. I think you could really consider the possibility to work abroad, maybe that's the only practical change you could do at the moment. Maybe Chile?

These job Interviews are that way, because you will be digging in garbage code all day long and this is why they test that way. With garbage code I mean millions of lines of ancient grown up code whichbwas never refactored which contains site long xode which can be rewritten as a one liner and where the architecture is so intertwined that you cannot pull anywhere without crusging the whole thing and zero test coverage. Most programming jobs is digging in such shit all day long.

Software engineer is probably the worst job in the whole tech industry. You will be digging in shit garbage code all day long and so many people are totally destroyed after a few years mentally and physically. You are at the bottom at the company hirarchy. It is nowadays a job where you lick ass or get fired. You make them hundreds of thousands of dollars or you get fired. You do overtime or grt fired. And everyone knows you dig in shit all day long and you have to lick ass. And in which job do you have to report every day at 9 what you did all day long yesterday, when you went taking a shit. Oh I forgot no job. And in which job you have to do 6 rounds of interviews to get paid a minimum salary for licking asscand digging in shit. Just quit this shit industry full of mental patients. It was once a good and respected job, but nowadays everyone knows it is absolute shit.

Honestly good luck to you bud, your willing to put in lots of effort to improve/continue your skills and it will pay off. (After reading some of the comments below and seeing people complaining about not looking in the camera or whatever) there's always something to improve on but the fact your being vulnerable on camera is a brave thing to do; you know your goals and what you want and your passion is still burning bright! As someone that got a tech/information technology degree, unfortunately during covid, and didn't even have a chance to break into the industry, it was difficult to get through interviews and brace the rejection. Now, I'm in a whole different industry and profession, with a small bit of hope to still use my degree skills. I completely understand your situation. I recently went through the recruitment process for my dream company. Last year, I was juggling two jobs because one of them had financial issues, leading to delayed payments. I initially planned to stay at the second job for only a year, but here I am, still stuck at that unreliable company and actively job hunting. I received a promising job offer, applied, and was thrilled after the first phone call. The position offered good pay and an eight-hour workday, a relief after working 12-hour days for the past year. I completed five coding challenges and answered eight questions, confident that I did well based on the test results. The next day, I had a follow-up call, and everything seemed great. One more technical meeting, and they would make a decision. I prepared thoroughly for the meeting, but to my surprise, it included a live coding session. As someone with autism and OCD, this was challenging for me, especially using Google Docs, which is not ideal for coding. Additionally, the young man conducting the interview disrupted my thinking and coding with irrelevant questions. Despite this, I managed to do well on 3 out of 5 exercises and answered all technical questions correctly. Now, I’m waiting for feedback. I have a feeling the interviewer might not have been impressed, but I’m also exploring other opportunities. Your story resonated with me, and I wish you the best in finding the right job. Have a great day and stay positive.

"Some are decades into this field", do not get overwhelmed by this. I swear by these words, that if you are consistent with learning even a bit every day or other day, but stay consistent. You will outperform many if not most in no time. Some end up in a comfort zone and stop challenging themselves or stop learning new stuff and get outdated or worse even lose their edge. Stick with one or two medium to big courses a month and you are more than ahead of the curve and by that i mean a lot of other people. I'm so sorry to hear this. None of us can escape. This market is super frustrating, and made me second guess my skills. Something will come up for us eventually

Sorry to hear this. A few people I know are having a tough time finding something new too. It’s great that you’re considering a new skill set! Best wishes on your new path.

Dude. Just study for like a week and you should be able to get through the interview. The stuff you have to do in a tech interview is mostly basic data structures and algorithms.

Heres a thing. Your video actually sucks. Its poorly prepared. You have edits every few seconds. You have basically edited together a collection of bullet points and somehow called it a video. This was the first videos i saw of you. So i looked for other videos and it looks like you have been this for a year and yet for some reason your videos are like this when i looked briefly into a few of them. Why have you not got better? Perhaps your programming skills suffer from the same issue. This occurs in software interviews a lot where the questions which are asked often have multiple answers which would score 2, 4, 6, 8 out of 10 for example based on the person answering. Every time I come across people who struggle in interviews I ask them some basic software design questions and quickly it becomes obvious why they don't pass interviews. They give answers which appear correct but are also completely substandard compared to what other candidates are answering with. These include really opening ended questions like "When a user enters a url into a browser and presses return what happens? Please go into as much detail as possible" somebody who knows stuff can and should be able to spent about an hour talking about that question. What happens is weak candidates skip massive sections. Strong candidates you have to stop them on a section and ask them to move on because they give too much detail. These are often not only knowledge tests but a demonstration of technical communication skills and how to explain how a system works which is critical to being a Senior or above. Your videos show weak communication skills across them because you can write a script and then pull off more than 20 seconds worth of video at a time. People will pick up on it. You obviously don't realize or you are failing to improve it. You describe a problem interview question at 4:20 in the video. You can't even ask to describe the problem you were given properly... and the part you do describe has 9 video edits on it. I could not even understand your version of the problem description. I would say your being flagged in interviews for a number of different reasons....

Thanks for your comment. There's a lot to unpack so I'll just say this This video is one where I just turned on the camera and talked, with minimal editing and cuts. Most of those cuts are just removing the pauses between my speaking. This video also performed exceptionally well, which means I resonated with most of the people watching. I'm happy with that. I've seen similar styles of videos do well because it's more authentic vs the hyper editing. Maybe it's "lazy" but if you don't like that style of video then you don't have to watch. As for coding, I don't disagree with the importance of being able to communicate through a problem. It sounds like maybe you have a technical background. Sure maybe I could've taken some time to remember the specifics of the coding problem I loosely described but that wasn't the point of the video

Hi, Thanks for sharing your experience. Unlike you, I don't have a MS in computer engineering, but I do have 2 BS degrees: one in electrical engineering, and the other is in software engineering. I was a hardware engineer with a lot of experience in the medical devices and consumer electronics companies. I decided to shift my focus on software engineering since 2019 and worked as a software test engineer - testing medical devices using a home-brew test framework by my company that was written in Ruby. I had 10+ years developing desktop applications using .Net (C#), Java, and a very short period (1 year) of experience with web development (full-stack) using JavaScript, Php, and Oracle SQL. I had to take care of my mom who was very ill and living in Maine back in 2023, so I needed some indefinite time off to move her to my home town in Washington state. After working with my HR department, the only choice was to terminate my employment. I did so. I left my job and focused on all the things needed to be done to bring my mom to my hometown, and it took 4 months to complete. No one could predict the time. If I knew this, I would just take a leave-of-absence. Now I am trying to go back to my company unsuccessfully. The position is now filled. So I am now on the same path you're on: looking for job, being interviewed for software engineering jobs with total concentration on DS&A, which, just like you, I did not have a chance to use so much in my career. Of course, with AI now available at large, software engineering job searching will be even harder. Therefore, I decided to concentrate on embedded software development. I know that I will have to refresh on my C++ (I used it long ago) and get my hands dirty with MicroControllers. I am learning on my own, as of now, from a series of (set of 3) books written by Valvano in hope to get a firm idea and enough of hands-on exercise to enter the next chapter of my career. The future is uncertain, but I just do this while also learning and taking certifications on software testing, Microsoft or Oracle certifications on their software development products (and got locked into those products???). The way it goes, I don't know how I can get through the code interview these days. I read the 'Cracking the Code Interview' and a handful of other books, but I think other than making those authors richer, I did not benefit from these book one bit. Anyhow, good luck with your job search or next endeavour. I am sure things will change.

Hey man, I hear you. The current Soft Engineer interview is screwed by those Big tech firms that everything is focused on Leetcode. That ends up with non-coding newbie could get a SE jobs through 2-month code camp training, whereas people with many years of SE experience cannot pass any interview unless they spend several months going through the same Leetcode training or code camp. Once you get the job, Leetcode has 0 value in real work.

My 2 cents: I got into cartography/drafting/land surveying. This field doesn’t seem to interest anybody. It’s a combination of field and office work. You can choose to draft construction plans all day long if you want to avoid the field. Anyways, I have the easiest time finding work. But I am under the impression that computer programming people earn significantly more money than me by working fewer hours. And now you guys can’t find work? Last year you were bragging about the easy working conditions and amazing salaries.

The problem for the interviewers is that a lot of people come in saying they can program with 5 or 10 years of programming and then can’t at all in any language. Go figure out what the most popular language is that you can interview for, learn that for a month and do the leet code exercises. Then do the interviews. You should be fine.
