Area 5150 demo on IBM 5153 CGA Monitor: 60fps CRT video
Here's Area 5150 running on an IBM PC/XT w/the IBM 5153 Color Display. Focus isn't the best, but this shows the full 60Hz action in correct colors (more or less). On a CGA CRT, some sections extend the graphics all the way out to the screen borders, as intended.
Audio recorded by miking the PC speaker with the case off.

If CRTs are too boring, trendy, or overdone for ya, now it can also mimic older monochrome LCDs, orange plasma displays, and electroluminescent panels - even the temporal dot-pattern modulation that some of them used for dithering. The best CGA Graphics I have ever seen. I think some of them rivaled EGA or early VGA! It is clearly drawing with more colors than CGA originally was designed for (4-colors in graphics mode and 16 colors in text mode). Is this done with scanline swaps, by exploiting the ASCII Art text mode characters into custom ones, or does the CGA hardware have extra modes that were not documented, or ?

    Honestly why is everyone ignoring the sound? This is the fucking speaker. Only way I can see that working is a straight DMA to the timer chip while another timer controls the DMA just to get all this smooth video. The 6850 also gives you insane control over the video and was designed with the idea that you could "add on" to it. Not that anyone did. Tech just moved to fast:P

      You can play samples through the PC speaker using timed interrupts to send a series of frequencies that normally sets the pitch, but will actually ramp the voltage, similar to how samples are done with the C64 these days.

    • @pixelcrunch300
      @pixelcrunch300 Před 4 měsíci

      IIRC, the IBM CGA’s character set is set in ROM, which mean it is unable to be customized in any way. What they’re doing is tricking the CGA to only display two lines of each character, thus simulating 640x200 at 16 Colors. (Love your vids, btw!)

    Astonishing. Back in early 1992, my old man brought a PC back from work, as they were chucking it out - an IBM XT with CGA display, two floppy drives, 512K of RAM and a broken hard drive. I was 12, and fascinated by it - but the blocky text, four colour display wasn't going to set the world alight (aside from a Breakout clone which had 16, much to my puzzlement, of course it was using the "160x100" trick). I still used it daily - as a games machine, of course, and eventually managed to find a copy of Windows 3.0 for it. It was unusably slow... you could see the window elements being drawn one by one, and it was in 640x200 mono only. The following year we bought a VGA card and monitor for it (not that Windows could use it, turns out the VGA driver has 80186 code in it), and I still remember how Prince of Persia went from looking awful to superb, and how sharp the text became. In late 1994 we bought a 486 and the poor old XT was given away to a friend. Seeing this 32 years on from those days, running on CGA... absolutely incredible. Not only figuring out the various tricks, but implementing them with that painfully slow hardware.... astonishing. A hearty "well done" to the talented coders, for pulling off the seemingly impossible. I can only imagine what the IBM folks would have made of this back in the day!

    • @x86VileR

      The CGA can only fetch a new character from VRAM at 8-pixel increments; a new one for every pixel would've required 8 times the bandwidth (and would also exceed the 6845 CRTC's capabilities in terms of clock speed).
