Brushless Motor Test in an ES 2 500
Sorry for the video quality. It's always something, isn't it.
This motor was designed for FRC robotics competitions, but hey, it's a nice motor and gearbox so I'm going to use it for the new train I'm working on. It'll work really nicely for that since the motors and gearboxes are small and can fit in the trucks on the locomotive. More to come...

Love that slow speed performance. Let me guess: You're building a 16-unit EMU passenger train to beat both the lap and weight records at Train Mountain.
Hahaha.. naw just an EMD SW1 locomotive. I do not think people have made electric versions of this before simply because the motors and gearboxes are hard to fit into this size compared to the more common hydrostatic pump motors.
If that's all LGB, you could probably have kept operating. I think there's a flowing lava exception to the warranty, but not much else even slows it down.
I think the train would have floated away lol
Nice railway.
lmao nice 👍
What is causing the derailment so often at the start?
The track is not quite in gauge in some places. In others, this car comes off if the track has too severe a twist for it to navigate
Thank you for the different perspective. Looked like a fun work day.
😂 I was expecting a boxcar at the end. LOL
Waits through all 120 cabooses expecting a different car in it.. that is dedication!
I have two questions 1. Why did the motors speed up when the meter was activated? 2. My Electrical Age installation crashes when I try to power the generator. And I get in the output log (Exception in server tick loop, my minecraft is 1.7.10, and it also says java.lang.NoSuchMethodError)
The meter acts like a switch; when it isn’t measuring it doesn’t allow current to flow
Love the sound of 89!
Lovely countryside. Strasburg Rail Road?
Yep
Need a longer video mate! Also explain what you seem to be riding on?
It’s a train! And yeah, I probably should do a longer video. Thing is, without brakes it’s pretty hard to use on such a short piece of test track.
🚄
Hi Jared, thank you for this nice video. I have a personal similar ongoing project but with a much bigger VFD, your project is interesting and I would like to see your approach. unfortunately, the 3 links for the source code on your main comment are not working. anyway to get an update on those link? Thank you Jared
I’m currently in a bit of a transitional period and my server is offline as a result; I’ve been looking at different motors and driver boards and the biggest issue is finding high quality VFD drivers that support engine braking via a similar interface to the Syren50. I’ve considered using the sorts of motors and drivers that FIRST robotics uses but my concern is that I’d rather use a higher voltage than 12 volts to reduce the current and heat loss.
What type of rails profile do you use?
Aaron’s track has 3 different profiles, one of the strongest ones being Culp rail. It’s similar to scaled down 115 RE
Leaf blower?
We did a pass with the leaf blower before raking; it didn’t make the cut in this video. A lot of sticks and leaves were in the stones so it was better to rake
didn't know they still did the piggyback trailers in this era of containers.
I’d say that a lot of the container trains I’ve done video on in the past are predominantly containers only but I’m not sure.

What does that inside double track do?
It’s a simple passing track at one end of the railroad that I visited. Cars are often parked on it.
A flatcar's "lived experience."
Nice perspective Jared
Just like in the movie, except on top you should have the opposite image 😅
Have a real one 32 volts from Montreal´s Expo express of 1967. No ! Not for sale or trade. Probably the last one in existence.
Good to see you Jared. Now you have to test them in real cold, heat, with contaminants like oil, creosote. In rail crossing with real cars weight passing on....... Since i´m a neanderthal with those technology, can you test with different plastics ? Can old one been melted and reused ? Of course without copyright anybody can copy. But isn´t it a hobby with sharing knowledges and try ? There is already metal and plastic molded ones on the market. Are yours more economical ? Would you like to produce thousands of them ? So many many questions..... Good work and hope for the best ! Cheers 😊
Hey, yeah, happy to talk about it. It’s mostly an experiment. The plastic I’m using is about the most robust material that is available to me as far as plastic is concerned and is unlikely to be short lived if done properly. Metal ones would probably be the next step. Old ones probably could be recycled if you really wanted to, but any impurities in the plastic would need to be removed in that process. I would not say that the way I’m making them on the printer is any cheaper than if a mold was used. It’s more frustrating if anything. I did try two different plastics but there are only so many options for this printer that are suitable for this sort of use. Many plastics available do have strength tests available to read about.
@@JaredDunbar thanks Jared gor your fast answer. 👍
Well I guess those weren't LEDs... the other video made it look like that. Very nice setup, gotta love the things one can do with arduino! Those build plates are great too. Now I want a backyard railroad!
Yeah, the Amazon seller marketed them as LED lights but they certainly were NOT LED lights.
@@JaredDunbar Sigh. Amazon is slowly becoming like ebay and other sites, selling fake/cheapo stuff. They removed the ability to ask questions about products, and the comments are all from different listings, making them irrelevant/misleading.
About 14 seconds for one shingle, so that's about 2000 in 8 hours - not counting the time to swap in a new wood block.
They would have probably used it at a higher speed than we do at the fair if it was from overhead belt in a factory (a hit and miss engine runs slower). Material is donated so it’s more important to show the process than produce the result. If you operated this in production today you would not be able to run it for 8 hours at a time without hearing protection because it generates over 100 dB of sound level, which is above OSHA limits.
Very nice, I like how you reproduced the incandescent light fade-out effect.
It’s probably just incidental from the capacitance of the bulbs. I didn’t do anything particularly special there. Maybe the use of a relay makes it behave differently from if I used solid state controls though?
@@JaredDunbar Yeah, if it's using a buck converter or any switch-mode regulator, it'll have a capacitor. I doubt the relay will make a difference, but if you use a solid state switch/relay and attempt to dim it using PWM, the switching regulator and/or relay might not be happy.
Calling it "End of train" might be bad juju. Especially on MLBK, call it the "Anti-crash device" instead 😁 What is that, like an ESP32 or something?
It has a tiny board from Dfrobot that has a lithium battery charger onboard which makes it easier to operate. I’m not sure what processor it was but it’s not WiFi capable unfortunately.
Why don't you fix the areas where the trains keep derailing?
This is a visit to Aaron’s track at the Mill Brook Railroad. He’s constantly in a state of doing maintenance on the track, and a lot of it is done reactively.
Need to enter it at Union Grove Great Lakes Dragaway.😅
nice horn! just the thing it needs.
2:17 - a genuine Mill Brook moment! Thank you for documenting this project, and doing the other one.
I always have fun helping Aaron with the railroad. There’s so much to tinker with and work on.
Will you be selling kits or plans for this setup?
That’s possible. I’m not sure yet, still working out the design still.
Makes me want to get a large plot of land and cut out a trail and put a mini railway 😊 this is awesome
Nice catch Jared 👍That is a great ride, the 6 miles between Venus and Midlothian. When I have time I will take the access rd. just to watch the activity or video as time permits.
It was nice. The highway is higher up than the access road so I think it came out better on camera the way it happened. I didn’t even know it was there, it was just along our trip from Waco to DFW and turns out it was a great catch.
I love it
Looks like very good fun
How do you get WAILA to show the full details when looking at a block like the signal bus?
There’s an option in the config for “easy Waila mode”
Miss my friend Dave who was a big train guy. RIP.

Thank you for sharing this peek into the life of a Blacksmith. All that pounding looks to be very hard on his joints. Blacksmiths were respected members of a community and helped it grow. To this day they make big contribute a lot through newer methods and on bigger scales such as making cast iron pans for Lodge.
Put some weight into that swing, stop babying it
We certainly gave it a good wack later! For this one we were trying to make it evenly flat after the initial whack.
@@JaredDunbar I know what you were doing, but you can achieve the flatness while also smacking the shit out of it
This is super cool. They had self ratcheting screwdrivers in the late 1800s. Those old tools are SOLID
Nice gon. Hey do still have those 3d printed trucks you showed me at the fall meet
I do. I remade the wheels in a more durable plastic that I think is durable enough, but now I need to make new trucks for them to go in that are strong enough to support the beating that they will receive. Those trucks will certainly get a video here once I start testing them.
@@JaredDunbar i messaged you on messenger or something of that like itll be easier to talk there
