Plastic Surgeon Performs Otoplasty to Correct Prominent Ears
This young man underwent ear pinning (or, otoplasty) to correct prominent ears. This is a source of insecurity and teasing for a lot of children. That is why the majority of ear pinning procedures are done for kids between 5-10 years of age. The results are usually spectacular and permanent.

Thank you for this video and for your expertise in the removal of neurofibromas. It is because of doctors like you that my husband and I are grateful. We found a plastic surgeon in our area (Dallas, Texas) that specializes in NF1 removals and were very thrilled with his results over the excision of over 100 and electrodessication of over 400. Thanks for doing what you do! Not many specilaize in this area!

Fibroids There are different types of neurofibromas (benign tumors). These are divided according to their appearance and the area where they occur. The number of fibroids and where they occur is individual and unpredictable, even for people within the same family. The most common type of fibroma in NF1 is called dermal neurofibroma. These are soft, gel-like cysts that are from a few millimeters up to several centimeters in diameter. These fibroids appear or increase around puberty and in some women can increase in number and size in connection with pregnancy and/or menopause. They can be found all over the body. They may itch or be perceived as a cosmetic problem, but rarely cause pain or neurological consequences. These fibroids never develop into malignant tumors. Nevertheless, due to their number, visibility and/or size, they can affect the quality of life (10). Nodular fibroids are another type of fibroids. They sit deeper under the skin and are firmer in consistency. This type of fibroma can cause pain, weakness and tingling in the area supplied by the affected nerve. Plexiform neurofibromas are soft swellings under the skin or in depth, for example from the nerve plexuses in the armpit or pelvis, without clear boundaries to surrounding tissue. They differ from the other types of fibroids in that they are often congenital and/or occur at a younger age. They can be symptom-free, but also troublesome if they are located in particularly pressure-exposed places, for example under the foot. About half are invisible from the surface. This type of fibroma is initially benign, but can grow along the nerves and develop into a malignant tumor in approximately 8-12% of those with NF1 (11, 12). The English term for such malignant fibromas is malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST). Warning signs are constant pain or sudden growth in a plexiform neurofibroma that has otherwise been stable, or that it changes from being soft to becoming hard (8). Such development most often occurs in late adolescence or early adulthood.

The problem is that this neurofibromas tends to grow back in the same spot or right next to the spot where it was removed from. My experience is that a neurofibroma has grown back right on top of the scar where it was removed from. Important to know that there is different type s of fibroma. Nodular fibroma that appears deep into the tissue, Plexiform neurofibroma, Darmale fibroma. All of this appears differently on the body.

@@user-bm1me9il1r I cannot speak to your experience, but I can tell you after treating approximately 1000 patients over the last 12 years, the true recurrence of a tumor that is thoroughly removed is 0%. Otherwise, we would see much more recurrence. This is not to say that the surgery to remove several hundred tumors in one surgery does not come with a small amount of recurrence underneath some of the scars that form. There is a certain metric and a “sweet spot” that produces good results with an acceptable amount of recurrent tumors, all in the name of removing large numbers of tumors during a single surgery. For example, if I were to remove only 30 to 50 tumors during one session of surgery, I can get very close to 0% recurrence. Now when you up the numbers to 600 tumors, there will be some small percentage of tumor remnants left behind that can produce a small bump where the scar has formed. We typically accept this result and can still incorporate complete excision of these recurrent tumors with a future procedure to remove additional untreated tumors.

Thank for the education and information. I have this disorder which I am told I will need surgical intervention. I am set to see the neurosurgeon in August to find out. This situation is affecting my ability to walk due to the tumors sitting on my spine (L4 and L5). I am very scared about this as I have never had a surgery before. But it is affecting me with my job performance. I am unable to sit for long periods of time. I am unable to walk at times and I have had multiple falls. The pain is unbearable a lot of times. Thanks again as I appreciate you and all that you do as NF1 is not know to many prescribers.
