A Year-Long Photography Project with a Toy Camera (Kodak Ektar H35N)
In today's video, I talk about my 365-day photography challenge to capture daily life using a Kodak Ektar H35N film camera. My goal is just to document life, to create a visual journal, and to establish a daily photography practice. I talk about why I chose the Kodak Ektar H35N over my higher-end cameras for the project, which is to display random pairs of images (diptychs) on my website, potentially creating over 180,000 combinations.

Why Photographers MUST Print

    Hi Jeremy, I bought a h35n and used it for the first time this week on a trip to an island and used the gold 200 kodak for my photos. What films do you recommend? The other question I have is how do you digitally print the films if you make them at home or deliver them to a company?

    • @jeremybassetti
      @jeremybassetti Před 3 měsíci

      Awesome. I’m sure you got some great shots, especially in sunny situations. That film is good, but you will need flash in dark situations. You can’t go wrong by experimenting with different kinds of film. Because the camera doesn’t allow you to adjust many settings, using an all purpose film between 100 and 400 iso might be best for different environments. Just experiment and have fun and report back your preferences. You can send the film off to be developed and scanned (to a place like thedarkroom.com), have a local business do it, or develop and scan at home (you’ll need equipment and chemicals). If you’re a beginner, option 1 or 2.

    • @niket909
      @niket909 Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks for your opinion! I'm from Portugal and I was thinking about always taking the camera when traveling around my country or Europe because it's very portable and fits in my pocket. I'll travel to Europe next time next time and I will think about using some films more intended for special moments such as birthdays or dinners with friends but especially when traveling to urban centers and city parks. I was thinking about trying films from Ilford (I don't know which one to choose) and Fujifilm (FUJICOLOR 200 or other) or continuing to use Kodak 200 gold or trying Ultramax/color plus200.@@jeremybassetti

    • @jeremybassetti
      @jeremybassetti Před 3 měsíci

      Cool. You can’t go wrong to try those films out. They all look a little bit different. Shoot some and figure out which one you prefer. Just remember, the lower the ISO number, the more light you need. 200/400 is good all-purpose speeds for this camera. The Ilford film: all are good black and white film. You can’t go wrong with HP5. XP2 is good. Kentmere 400 is good too. They all have a different look. Search comparisons on YT and then try a few out. Make a video with your pictures and your results.

    @2DogAle Před 6 měsíci

    Jeremy, I have just started watching your videos and have truly enjoyed the ones I have seen. I so agree with printing your work. It goes from being a disposable distraction to a piece of tangible art as you say. When I first started taking photos as a young man, the only way you could enjoy your work was to print it out. Not only were you able to enjoy the finished photo, but the process of actually making it in the first place. You were in a darkroom, you had the process of exposing the paper, then putting it in the developer, stop bath etc., water to rinse and hanging to dry, all to see your finished work. The process itself was all part of the experience of making art. This mostly has been lost in the digital age. There is so many things wrong with social media and the degrading of art is just one of them, but it doesn’t have to be that way. I print my work more often now and post to social media less, much less. It has brought be back to what got me so excited to take photos in the first place. Not clicks or comments, but to touch and see my work hanging on a wall. I hope this comment makes sense to you. Just know that there are a lot of us out there that agree with you and hope that this trend continues because if it doesn’t I don’t want to think about how this form of art will survive. BTW - you need more people to follow your stuff here, it’s a lot different then many of the other CZcams photography channels. Too bad you probably will need social media to do so 😮

    • @jeremybassetti
      @jeremybassetti Před 6 měsíci

And so I do and have been doing for years. I’ve lived in some places-Bay Area, Austin-that have undergone rapid and drastic change. Phenomenal man. I wonder what he would have made of internet resources like Wikipedia or how it would have influenced his travels and writing. The Songlines are a comparable large data system. His death remains a huge loss.

      Thanks. It pops up if you’re watching on the YT app (mobile) or the YT website (desktop). If you’re watching via the YT website on a mobile browser, it might not appear.

    Thanks for this very useful shortcut. I'll give it a try. I use Apple Notes more and more as alternative for Evernote that I used for 9 years. Problem with Apple Notes: once you created a note with photos, you can't change the size of the photos as you wish. They are all (too) small or large. When they are large the note is very long when you print it. I would like to have the possibility (like in other note taking apps) to change the size as I wish. Do you know (as a photographer) the solution for that question?

    • @jeremybassetti
      @jeremybassetti Před 8 měsíci

      You’re welcome. Hope you sorted out that error too (your original comment disappeared). Unfortunately I don’t have a solution for your image sizing issue. But I’m curious to know what your use-case is. Are you using Notes as your primary writing/formatting software?

      @@jeremybassetti I deleted my previous comment because I saw your answer to my problem in your pinnend comment... I have been using Evernote for 9 years; I have now more than 8,600 notes. (a lot of them became 'dead notes') I am very satisfied, especially in the early years. Back then the program was even simpler than it is now, but the latest adjustments are not necessary for me (tasks, agenda...). Something that was interesting (projecting a note as a slideshow) has unfortunately disappeared. Positive at Evernote (EN): - strong search function (including OCR) - all types of attachments possible (photo, pdf, video, audio...) - own EN e-mail address to which important e-mails can be forwarded - powerful web clipper: texts from web pages are smoothly converted into a note, without advertising or other side articles - organizing by tags possible from the start - reasonable compensation for the paid version (now about $ 60/year for a personal account with more possibilities than a free account) Negative at EN: - EN is in private hands, which is why it has been said that it will go bankrupt sooner or later - a lot of rumors lately about rising subscription prices Alternatives I have tried: - Google Keep: free but very basic (no text formatting, no PDFs to add, note must first be saved as a pdf before printing...) - Notion: too complex for an ordinary citizen; note must first be saved to a pdf before it can be printed... - Nimbus note and Walling app: good but free account contains few testing options - AirSend and Trello: good planners but not real note taking apps - UpNote: Best alternative to Evernote, ridiculously cheap ($20 for a lifetime subscription) but no OCR And then I got to know Apple Notes, which after a few upgrades comes close to Evernote. It's just a pity that the photos in a note can all be large or small, so there are no in-between options. I don't understand why Apple hasn't made that possible yet. The small images are too small and the large ones too large to print. Tags are not possible in my desktop version, which is not good for me, because I like to organize/search by tag. Forwarding important emails is possible via a detour (first create a PDF from an email and then save it into AN) Web clipper not possible, but sharing a web page and saving it in Apple Notes is quite OK. The fact that the app is free and comes from Apple offers a lot of peace of mind. No bankruptcy to fear... So I now use 3 apps together: Evernote in general, UpNote for my travels (everything nice together + making photos smaller possible) and Apple Notes currently as a backup of Evernote. Perhaps Evernote can gradually disappear for me in this way, although I am satisfied with it.

      Hey Christian saw your comment on switching to Apple Notes to Evernote - I was thinking of doing the same thing but I have 1000s of Evernote notes so scared of making the same move and wondered how you imported them?

      It would probably b annoying, but Maybe you could insert the photos as like links? Throughout the note? I know I’ve seen something called an iCloud photo link option pop up, but I don’t rly know how they work, but maybe there’s a way to like attach 2-3 photos to one icloud link(?), and then like 5-10 to another … and insert those throughout the note? Idk. But there’s an app called Diarium u can add a photo/photos per day, and it uploads your location on each entry. There’s other apps too

    can you show or send me the way to convert the Altitude from meters to feet? I know there is someone that has asked this below, but for we novices on shortcuts, your explanation needs to be more specific or better answered. Merely saying to do a calculation by taking the variable and multiplying it by 3.28 does not work.
