    I disagree with what you say about twisting forces on the stokers bottom bracket on the Calfee. Your Salsa has all of the torque on one side, and the frame is not asymmetrical to handle the torque on one side. The smaller chain rings are also directing more force to the bottom brackets.

    Im planning to build diy tandem bike with an 2 old mtb steel frame (26er). Then change it into 27.5 wheelsize with a thin tires, The drive train is one side and the captains crank is 1x and the stoker is 2x and the cassette is 10speed. In short hybrid tandem bike.

  • @AW.SO.M3
    @AW.SO.M3 Před 2 lety

    I have converted my tandem from double to single side drivetrain. I ended up using chainring bolts intened for double crankset with bash guard(longer at 10mm), and used 1.3mm spacers to push out the stoker timing chainring outwards. This eliminated the timing chain and drive chain from colliding/touching at all, even during shifting. All this was done because I wanted to use different length cranks for both the captain and stoker, but didn't want to purchase expensive tandem specific crankset. This also opened up the market for me on crank selection. I ended up using a triple crank for the stoker and used it as a double. And using a double crank for the captain and using it as a single.

      If you want to do a 3x drive train then you pretty much have to go left side timing chain. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a tandem equipped with left side timing chain, except if it was a mountain bike I’d be worried about damaging it then needing to try and replace it quickly.

    • @DoubleTroubleTandem
      @DoubleTroubleTandem Před 2 lety

      Flow trail isn’t known for being super steep but it has at least a few steeper sections. It is a trail that I think is fun for all skill levels. Beginners can take their time and experts will bomb it at high speeds including the corners. First time we went down (early in my stoked learning to ride) we road the brakes and went less than half the speed we do today. If you manage the speed from the start then you’ll probably be fine. All that being said, I’d suggest riding it on a single once to get an idea if you’d feel comfortable.

  • @Red-ju4mi
    @Red-ju4mi Před 2 lety

    what go pro mount is that on the rear

    • @DoubleTroubleTandem
      @DoubleTroubleTandem Před 2 lety

      Custom made. I used a mount from old aero bars. The seat post is the same size as the intended handle bar. Then I bought a strait carbon tube that was the same diameter as the old aero bar. Then you use an off the shelf GoPro pole mount. The biggest issue is when you take it close to trees and it gets caught.

  • @Red-ju4mi
    @Red-ju4mi Před 2 lety

    So the front crank is also a triple? Only using the small chain?

    • @DoubleTroubleTandem
      @DoubleTroubleTandem Před 2 lety

      Yep, both cranks are 3x rear and front are both timing chain on the 64bcd. Front gets a bash guard on one side of the 104 BCD (doesn’t matter what side). Rear cranks have the driving chain ring on center and could also have a bash guard on the outside, if needed (the Ridebo doesn’t have one because you can’t bash the rear ring)

    • @DoubleTroubleTandem
      @DoubleTroubleTandem Před 2 lety

      You can buy them but they’ll be sized for a standard front chain ring. Usually the smallest you can get is for 30 or 32T. Works well for the back but it’s bigger than needed if you’re running only a small ring in front. On our newest bike we had a friend with a CNC mill us a custom one out of high density plastic and made it just bigger than the spider’s arms.

    Quick question: Why do tandem bikes have their pedals in line? Wouldn't it be better if the rear pedals were 90 degrees to the front? That way, one rider would always be providing power on the downstroke.

    • @DoubleTroubleTandem
      @DoubleTroubleTandem Před 2 lety

      From my reading I’ve seen most people recommend in phase or 90 degrees out of phase like you suggested. Personally I’ve only tried in phase or variable out of phase (independent coasting). The reason why I haven’t tried a fixed offset has to do with knowing where the pedals are as the captain. If you’re cornering or trying to avoid an obstacle, if you’re out of phase then you have to account for that. I found that the pedals not being synced felt less stable, especially when standing. When my stoker is in phase I didn’t feel as if I was fighting the shifts in their body weight. Maybe if the offset was fixed it would be okay, but it was quite difficult with the independent coasting. If you try mountain biking with the 90 offset and like it let me know. I’d be curious to hear how it goes.

    • @CarlosSilva-ti5ib
      @CarlosSilva-ti5ib Před 2 lety

      From my 10000 kms experience on tandem (Portugal) I say that pedals in phase are crucial to start motion on steep climbs (or sand, for example) and they help to keep rythm on climbs. We've never tryed 90º, but sometimes the chain jumped out and we rode a few kms with a slight degree difference, it was horrible.

    • @ronbell7920
      @ronbell7920 Před rokem

      Tried it, didn't like it. Cornering is trickier, as someone else posted climbing out of the saddle is harder. Also, the pedal stroke was not as smooth. The disadvantages outweighed the pros for us!

I’ll post some photos of the setup at some point for people to copy. The big issue is the part to mount it to the post is from an old aero bar set. Maybe I can convince one of those vendors in China to make them for cheap if I can show enough interest for folks to buy them.

    Sorry I don't live in CA but may I ask why this trail is illegal? And did you know it was illegal before riding it? For an illegal trail it sure looks like it's been well ridden.

    • @DoubleTroubleTandem
      @DoubleTroubleTandem Před 3 lety

      I am unaware if those who say they are illegal are correct or just trying to prevent more riders from using their local trails. I know they are unsanctioned but they are linked via sanctioned trails and roads. The entrances of the trails are easy to spot and it is just plain silly to think that the rangers and land managers aren’t aware of exactly where we enter and exit of the more popular trails are. I am a member of multiple rider groups and I do not know of anyone that has been personally ticketed or asked to leave these trails (its a lot of people, greater than 100, who ride these trails often). There are a few trails that have do not trespass signs on the entrances and I have heard (second hand) of these trails being ticketed. When in other areas, illegal trails are periodically disrupted and frequently labeled with no trespassing signs which does not happen here except on those trails already labeled as such. I feel that I shouldn’t censor those who want to state these trails are illegal, especially if it turns out to be true and someone gets a citation for being on these trails. I have removed the names from my description and have removed it from the title slide (well, its in progress, the movie editor is currently broken for this movie so I am waiting on their support response) which I’d like to think is a reasonable compromise on my part.

      @@DoubleTroubleTandem as I said before and from your video it looks like a well ridden and worn in trail for a trail that is said to be illegal. And like you said a truly illegal trail would 1.) most likely have some "no trespassing" signs; and 2.) the authorities would most definitely know about this trail being used as much as it appears to be and would most likely have done/be doing something about it. And lastly if it was a real illegal trail I don't think it would appear to be as ridden and well worn in as it appears to be. Maybe I'm wrong but that's just my bystander observation(s). After reading through the other comments on here it more or less appears to me that you have a bunch of insecure internet trolls up there in NorCal. @@DoubleTroubleTandem To give you an example of something that happened here on our side of the country: Once of our more popular local trails is located on state property which is managed by the county. The property (and hence the trail) was officially closed for a few months due to the covid-19 situation. A few people here and there ignored the closure and rode the trails anyway. One such group of about 3 riders thought they were above the law and it wold be fine to ride the trail anyway when a couple of officers from the local sheriffs department showed up and waited for the riders to come back to the trailhead. My wife & I were passing through the parking area on our tandem and witnessed each of them being issued tickets for trespassing. So I would think that if the trail you rode was truly illegal then similar things would be happening there.
