AEC Matador 1939 Welland Steam & Country Rally Military Off Road Course Drivers View
1939 AEC Matador O853 123 Military Off road Course at Welland steam & Country Rally 27-7-2024
Here we see my 85 year old AEC Matador tackle the Military off road course at Welland Show.
The AEC MAT (Medium Artillery Tractor) was widely regarded as one of the best wartime trucks of any county made for WW2. Known for its excellent off road and haulage capabilities. Originally intended as an Artillery Tractor intended to tow 3.7 inch Anti Aircraft guns, 4.5 and 5.5 inch Cannons.
This Matador is chassis No. 123. It is the 123rd Matador built, the 9th oldest surviving Matador and the oldest in original unrestored condition.
This vehicle was ordered by the WD under contract V3501 dated 24th August 1939. Information supplied by the Leyland Motors Museum suggest that the vehicle was built in late October or early November 1939. This vehicle was originally specified to be built with a diesel Engine, but during construction the WD ask if a batch could be converted to petrol engines and this vehicle was one of the batch select. This was due to the upcoming Norwegian Campaign and the fear of the WD that Diesel engines would be difficult to start in extremely cold conditions. It is not known if any Matadors ever made it to Norway. But it is known that the WDs fears that the AEC 7.7 Diesel engine would not start in the cold were completely unfounded, as the AEC 7.7 Diesel is legendary for starting instantly even in the coldest conditions.

56103 finally bursts into life. This one did not want to start, we had to jump start it off 56091 and in the end a dose of easy start was required. It shut itself down after 30 seconds as it was not charging. Will sort that next week.

37685 first start since Jan 2005
zhlédnutí 605KPřed 15 lety
This is 37685s first start since Jan 2005. The first attempt was called off because only 1 starter motor was working. After the other starter was fixed she still took some time to start. The popping and black smoke is us testing all cylinders are firing. It settled down nicely with 65 psi of oil pressure. BEAST!!! 37685 should be appearing on a railtour near you very soon.
47772's first start in quite a few years `
zhlédnutí 225KPřed 15 lety
47772 started for the first time in some time. this engine has EP start contactors which is why it stop motoring over after a couple of turns as the air had got too low. it was a bit sluggish to start with but it soon clears and settles down nicely with oil pressure of 60 PSI. still plenty more work to be done on this one before it graces the main line again. But it should not be too long away
37516 first start in 4 years
zhlédnutí 308KPřed 15 lety
377516 starts for the first time in 4 years. It had only arrived at our site 18 hour previously. It starts well and the exhaust soon clears. within the hour we also had it taking power and moving around the yard.

I've always liked the noise the 37 makes, I was woken up by one idling when I lived in Falkirk, not particularly near the railway. I was puzzled, but later found out it was waiting to pick up an empty timber wagon from the local timber mechant, I didn't know there was a line there. And I worked for BR at the time.

We often use to Load bank 56's with roof / silencers off at IMM , you could really hear them turbos scream , first one we load banked at IMM it caught fire , sucked all exhaust sparks into electrical compartment filters and set fire to them You knew the power before taking readings as soon as them turbos screamed , they were pig to work on though

I've seen so many videos like this where there is little to no ventilation and they start diesels. What is it with these people and shops??

Ha ha I made a model version of a reluctant starter, using 56 sound files but with a BR130 (Ludmilla) people forget just how hard these beasts work, and the staff that keep them going!

Pretty scary starting in the building after that long, if something sticks and goes into runaway, and starts the roof on fire.

Its the firing order running down the crank that makes that lovely sound. Two pots firing at the same time hence to "hunting" after all have fired down the crank.Gives huge torque to the gen sets.
