Love this but they forgot to include the craziest part was that the germans all started singing deutches uber allies when the engagement first started and that was how the norwegians confirmed they were enemy. This is a bit more haunting and humanizing but the reality is that the ship was stuffed full of gestapo and die hard nazi scum specially chosen to take control of the country and that were happy to die for hitler

  • @adolfhitlermunchen

to be honest, im glad norway was as lucky as they was all the time, if the germans would have won, the good old norway wouldnt be a good enough country for me to live.....im glad we had a good king .....im glad we had smart politicals.....im glad we had brave people that fought for our lives.....

What were the Germans thinking of, sailing a warship like that into confined waters with known defensive gun batteries - at 1200m ie point blank range for 11 inch calibre coastal defence guns.

Have not seen the full movie, but I have no idea why they didn't use the quote: "Enten blir jeg stilt for krigsrett, eller så blir jeg krigshelt. Fyr!" which translates to "Either I'll be court-martialed, or I'll be a war hero. Fire!". This is what was admittely said when oberst Eriksen gave the firing order and is the most low hanging-fruit, patriotic/Hollywood line ever. When they make a big war movie like this I have no idea why they just fire on all cylinders in terms of leadership and responsibillty showed

Ok, this is all the Admiral's fault he stupidly lead his ship the Blucher into the fjord, without scouting or no precautions he told the entire ship to go dark, no radio or lights, trying to quietly and sneak past the fortress, to storm Oslo, he should know 1. That the element of surprise was lost 2. He shoulded scouted the area before moving forward and 3. to have the Luztow go in front of him, because the Luztow was better armored than the Blucher and last of all not to underestimate the Norwegian and shoulded know about the weapons that Norwegian had at the fortress.

The king was a pussy. A real king would die in battle or commit suicide if his country was lost. Plus terrain in Norway is great for defence and one would of thought the Norwegian army would of done a bit better (I know there liberal pacifists but you should at least defend your state properly).

Otherwise known as the battle of Drøbak Sound, took place on April 9, 1940, during the early phase of the German invasion of Norway (operation Weserübung), between a detachment of the German fleet (Kampfgruppe 5) led by the German Heavy Cruiser Blücher (which just so happened to be transporting most of the troops and Gestapo personnel for the occupation of Oslo), and the Oscarsborg fortress, the resulting battle led to the Sinking of the the Blücher and the retreat of the remaining German ships, it was a significant Norwegian victory, because it delayed the German occupation long enough for King Haakon VII and most of his government to escape the Norwegian capital. the guns used against the Blücher were 28cm (11.0 in) Krupp guns loaded with explosive shells that were around 560 lbs, the blast from these guns shattered windows in buildings 5 miles away, there were actually three of these guns but only enough personal were on hand to operate two of them, though the third gun was loaded. It wasn't just the main Oscarsborg fortress that opened fire, there were two smaller Norwegian batteries (Husvik and Kopås) in the area, with 57 mm and 15 cm guns that also opened fire on the Blücher and caused further damage, the German cruiser attempted to return fire but its 20.3 cm guns were damaged by the second 28 cm shell from the main battery, any other return fire from the ship was essentially "panic fire". The ground based torpedo battery essentially finished the heavy cruiser with 2 shots at a range of under 600 yards, the first torpedo caused minimal damage but the second torpedo struck almost the same spot as the first 28 cm shell did and essentially this sealed the ship's fate, and despite the catastrophic damage, it still took around 2 hours before the Blücher finally sank. Around 800 German sailors lost their lives in this battle. Essentially this battle marked the beginning of WW2 in Western Europe. Just in case anyone was wondering why that the one officer was asking about firing warning shots, this is because at the time Norwegian pre-war rules of engagement required that warning shots be fired first. But in fact actually hours before this encounter the German flotilla had encountered and forced its way past several other Norwegian forts at the mouth of the Oslofjord, Bolærne and Rauøy (and engaged and sank the Norwegian patrol boat Pol lll), all of which fired warning shots first, afterwards, several live rounds were actually fired at Blücher but all missed due to poor visibility, and contact was eventually lost, Colonel (Oberst) Eriksen who commanded the Oscarsborg fortress knew of this encounter, hence why he didn't fire any warning shots first.

A Dutch KLM pilot say this all happening at Fornebu airport. He say the landing of the German planes and knew this was a new kind of war tactic. Soon after he went to the German commander and said he was Dutch and neutral and liked to go back to Holland. Looking really a bit dumb and overly friendly. So he could go. When he was back, he immediately went to the Dutch High Command and told his experience. So all airports around The Hague were heavenly armed and defended. So the surprise attack on 10th of may 1940 ended in a temporary German defeat, costing about 250 planes. In Norway the Kriegsmarine lost many ships and in Holland they lost a large part of the airlanding airforce. This helped England later on.
