Bold Coast Dreams
A short film for Sony shot entirely on the new 35mm f1.4 GM lens. Shot by a long time friend David Mclain. Quoddy Head is the Easternmost part of Maine and is also the Easternmost part of the United States. Locally, this region is known as The Bold Coast and it lives up to its name. Long expanses of inaccessible coast, 25-foot tides, and weather that’s always on the move. The kayak we chose for the paddle is our Isle Au Haut.

The Invitational Every year, for over 20 years, my old friend Marc Bourgoin has invited me on a kayak trip on the coast of Maine. He calls it “The Invitational”. Long after the tourists are gone, Marc and his friends head out for a paddle to a few of Maine’s 4,613 islands. Most of these extraordinary places are hiding in plain site and I feel incredibly lucky to have experienced a few of them w...

It was glass smoth with the squeegee then you have to sand it to get it smoother how does that work ?
Your band saw burned right through that wood lol
What an excellent series of videos. I was a boat builder in the UK and built my own sea kayak years ago. I commend you and your team on the excellent workmanship. It is good for folks to see the skill and craftsmanship that goes into building these beautiful boats.
I build Custom homes and have built a strip built kayak with Plans from Gulimont Kayaks and this kayak is a top notch quality product . Don’t know if their prices still hold from what I saw on the web but with the skilled man hours it takes to build one of these I think their a bargain. I can see these things increasing in value after their owned as the years go by just because of the cost of materials and skilled labor cost.
Hi thanks for vidio. Are you also using resin between the layers of kevlar? Or only then you do the vacum?
Du très beau travail professionnel merci pour le partage. Une petite question combien de couche de fibre de verre faut-il maître pour avoir une solidité et bien-sûr pas trop lourd
I purchased 2, took awhile to get them but at the time no one had Kayaks. these are great.
2:11 I almost saw what you're using as a spray adhesive between layers!!
Отличная работа! Какой вес получился в кг?
I have seen many, many videos of the manufacture of kayaks, but these five make me affirm what I have been saying for decades: They went to the moon for a reason...😍😍😍👋👋👋Greetings from Buenos Aires
Nice build up kayak sharing
Awesome work. I m going to guess these are more than the $400 ones at sporting goods stores.
What it weight
I don’t see these anywhere on gulf coast. I’m looking for my last yak at 62 ?
Show.....Show.....Show
Very labor and time intensive. Very boring. Probably way too expensive. The worker's lives have probably been shortened by being in such close proximity to the various chemicals.
Cen you kindly make a video on how to make the mold (to which you applied the gel coat) please?
Great set of 5 videos However, would have loved to see how the bulkheads were installed. What materials were used.
This man is a one man show.
Why don't you put scripe lines in the mould then you don't have to draw round a template
I watched all 5 and cannot fine how they install bulkheads? Are there no water tight compartments?
Absolutely beautiful
Hi Marc. Beautiful work and very informative videos.
This was very nicely done! I really enjoyed it.
Absolutely superb craftsmanship
Such a beautiful boat.....
You make it look so easy. Like I could do it myself in the shop lol... of course I know better 🙄 you are masters of a craft for sure.killer vid.
Very Nice and amazing vid sir new friends Here from Abu Dhabi UAE
Its so great! Sir awesome Innovations
Wow! Very nice Sir Good job!
Never heard of Lincoln Kayaks. Iv owned Current Designs Prijon Necky P&H oldtown vibe Wilderness Kevlar touring sea yak. Lincoln ? I’m thinking at 62 my last yak will be the CD Sisu Kevlar heavy water lay up. What do you have that compares ?
Out of curiociy what is he doing with the bag of resin around the 30th second?
Filling it with resin, twisting it, biting one corner of and use it like a pastry chef to squeeze control the flow out of the bag corner like a silicon gun

Amazing talent and construction techniques

No peel ply?
Yes, peel ply is used. It's the last layer we apply and can be seen in the video. White layer
There's an old Lincoln canoe for sail out here ,on FB for 50 bucks....been sitting in a field. Owner doesn't know if she floats or not.How hard can it be to patch a canoe ?
Great work, thanks. I am interested in the full fiberglass kayaks you build and the weights and weaves of the layup. Have you ever dabbled with s glass? Also is it an epoxy resin you are using for your vacuum bagging? Thanks

measure ??? overall,width,depth???
The Stellar ST-17 in fiberglass composite is also 55lbs but if you get it in carbon it's only 47lbs. Not a huge difference but still 4lbs lighter. Also while neither is a "high performance recreational" as it's an oxymoron the Stellar is a bit longer and 1 inch narrower making it faster. I tried both these boats and both are quite nice though. Both are able to "plane" if you are with a strong paddler and become far faster than it appears. I thought the Stellar had better padded seats and was faster so I went with that one even though it feels less "playful". One thing that really is awful is the Smart-Trak rudder in both. Tried it in calm water where it didn't make a difference but after having it for 3 years not happy with this rudder system. Supposedly it has a return spring so that if you let go of the pedals the rudder automatically centers but it never works that way and the rudder always goes this way and that. Every time you push the rudder pedal it sometimes moves, or doesn't, or does whatever so every step of the rudder is a guess as to what will happen because of this silly spring which gives you a dead spot where you never know how much control input will give how much steering to give. You will always have to walk the rudder left and right to "find" where it is and you'll never go straight. I tried another boat with the Smart Trak and it did the same. Took mine back to dealer who said it's working normally. I even took it upon myself to buy another entire rudder from a separate vendor to see if there was a problem and install it myself. Nothing changed! And the worst part of it all is that the pedals are in two pieces, one that is fixed and one that moves. The theory is that yes you can steer and still have leg drive actuating the rudder with your toes while your feet are still bracing but in practice since the spring doesn't engage right away your feet are always pointing forward trying to find your way out of that dead spot so you don't get your leg drive much of the time! Am still working on the spring to try to remove it and tighten the lines but not happy with it. I don't recommend Smart Trak rudder. Like any system whenever you have extra complexity you are introducing something to go wrong.
Great artisan work! I'm curious is the laminate design (fabric type, thickness, layers) typically something that comes from experience and knowhow or is this something that is more often optimized with composite software analysis?
That's a piece of art. So beautiful. Hate to ask what it costs. But anything hand made is worth it.
