Interesting to see the basic design of the place, I wonder how much a room cost for the night and if they had much trade. Definitely looked like it needed updating though.

It appears that hopper is part of a sifter so from what I know of the area its a good chance that was where they extracted copper from ore. The cars would come in unload into bins that would go in the storage areas there. The refined ore would go out along with the slag as well. The slag was more than likely ejected right into rail cars what was refined was stored until it was shipped. I saw a place like that in Colorado when I was military it was still in operation and still could be. The blue cabinet would be where ore samples were looked at for purity. If it was a precious metal like gold or nickel and that would all be processed on private property near the mine. Copper Iron & Zinc are different and need facilities like that where Govt. would do the quality control exams is what that place looks like. Most ores like that are first shipped to a separation facility like that one and then refined some before shipment to keep costs down. By all appearances that place is more than likely copper or zinc separation facility.

Very sad story about the pilot. RIP. I spent a year in Greenland at Sondrestrom AB above the Artic Circle as an Air Traffic Controller. Lots of short range aircraft would land at Sondrestrom on their trip between North America and Europe to refuel. Because we were so far from any other alternate airfields, it was mandatory that they check the forecast before heading to Sondrestrom. Even so, the weather could close the airfield and they had no option but eject (if possible). We had a procedure for the aircraft to fly over the navigational aid on the airfield and they then would eject. Hopefully we would be able to find them using helicopters on the airfield. This had happened in years past and I hiked to the top of one of the surrounding mountains to a crash site of a T-33 jet. The two man crew arrived at Sondrestrom but the airfield was 0-0 visibility and celling so they had to eject. Both survived but the crashed airplane is still there. BTW during winter it is -50F and 24 hour darkness while summer is +50F and 24 hour daylight. Not sure what time of year this happened but ejecting during winter would not have been a pleasant experience.

In my area the forest service would be overjoyed if all the mountain airplane wrecks disappeared over night as they consider them and attractive nuisance. in the 1060s the forest service dynamited a lot of historic structures in the local mountains to keep people from partying in them..

I'm a 20-year military pilot and have no problems with people taking the time to visit, explore and like yourself, pay respects. Unpopular opinion, I also don't have a problem with people taking something. As long as they don't leave trash or "add to the vibe" with art or graffiti I'd be good with that if it were my site and I was the one who lost my life. That piece, turned into a paper weight, mounted on a wall, etc. would tell my story, preserve my memory, bring a moment of reflection or inspire a future pilot. That's just me.

Just before it was demolished, just that jet engine by itself was probably a half-dozen of your entire lifetimes in taxes! Kinda of a sad end to a historical artifact, but military aircraft are sort-of a consumable. That's why they have ejection seats.
