Overland Mendocino National Forest - California Fire Lookout Towers Exploration
In this Overlanding trip we explored and visited 3 Fire Lookout Peaks in Mendocino National Forest. The trip stated a bit scatchy with multiple closed gates, but eventually we found trails and paths to get to all three lookout peaks.

    Grew up in Columbia.... driven ALL those trails over the years..... and YES, it's a lot like "Deliverance". There are 'gowers' up therre around Jupiter that guard their property with firearms, always take a saw, shovel, and ax with you to take care of downed trees, etc., and ignore your paint job.....most of the roads aren't that bad, but 4WD is recomended.... and clearance. Found a Subaru abandoned back there once; stripped and beated to death...... maybe I'll head out there again after it cools down.... proba ly late Setember or October..... too hot right now....

      @jroysdon Před 6 dny

      Right? These are just logging forestry roads. People use them all the time in city vehicles without 4WD/AWD. Go have fun exploring, but you're just driving in an inefficient way to get somewhere you could get much faster on HWY108 and HWY4 and then take the most direct forestry road. The path he took from Beardsley Reservoir to Sand Bar Flat is 16 miles and can be done in 45-50 minutes. This isn't overloading at all. It's just dry camping in your van along a forest road. That's great, but ... any city slicker can do that, don't even need a Subaru. But I love the SNF. 3N01 and toward Hull Creek is some of my favorite. Latest favorites are further up, off of Clarks Creek. LOL at your Deliverance references. Likely those are folks out on their dirt bikes and ATVs having fun on the trails, no difference than you. There is no Stanislaus Res. This is all along the Stanislaus River's 3 forks (he ended by Middle Fork), but likely you meant New Melones Res. I'm surprised who spoked you get at narrow roads. You should get a dirt bike and mount it on a tow hitch so you can go explore proper.

    • @OverlandOutAndAbout
      @OverlandOutAndAbout Před 6 dny

      Yes the forest roads are passable by almost any type of vehicle, but some for the trails on the 2nd half of the trip requires high clearance (I didn't use 4wd at all on this trip)

    It looks like you had a great weekend. It would be nice if you were a little more accurate as to your starting point... I was looking all around hwy 50 near Tahoe because that's the only Strawberry I know of. And I still don't know where you were... but it was cool. After map searching I found the area, somewhat?

      Strawberry is a town name, plus there are coordinates in the video to all the locations and trails.

      Murphys Crossing is on Hwy 4. Hwy 4 will take you up to the Bear Valley ski resort. closed there in the winter. From HWY 4 up to HWY 98 is the Deer Creek Trail. This is a very hard rated trail. Drops you out by Kirkwood ski area. to the east, Hope Valley.

    Bad luck on that signage at the end, but made me laugh after the multiple times after saying hopefully it doesn't say it. Great drive though!

      I ended up camping at that spot. It was a very scenic trip, just a bit crazy on the narrow/vegetation parts.

    Is this area very hot daytime in the Summer?

    • @OverlandOutAndAbout
      @OverlandOutAndAbout Před měsícem

      It can get hot there during the summer, but it's not a big deal. I was there a couple of years ago at 113 degrees, but as long as I could put my chair in the water, and suck on an ice cold beer, I was gold.

    I go winter camping up there, nice country. Nobody around once its cold. Whalen summit and Ramshorn is even better. You can get way ass lost up there. Some nice elevation lakes too.

      When I was there it was fairly empty, I saw a couple of motorcycles and one or two cars... it's really nice up there.

    Which trail is this? This doesn’t look like the Bowman lake trail that connects off the 20.

      It's an off-shiot trail. Look at these coordinates and follow the trail on the map: 39.40799, -120.97325

    Its been a long time since I have been in that area. I need to plan a trip there again. I just got back from a 4 day trip up to Plumas Ntl forest, north of Lake Tahoe. The Gold Lake 4X4 campground.

      @@OverlandOutAndAbout There are a lot of OHV roads. Might be tough with your van. I saw a big Dodge 2500 Max cab and a Huge USFS mega crew cab Ford roll by. An hour north of Tahoe. Look at CZcams. This is the main road which is difficult.
