I wish I would’ve seen this video 3 years ago. I am an "Anglo" American and I have been researching my ancestry and have come to find many Jews(or people with Jewish ancestry anyway) in there. I didn't know until this past week that my great grandfather was of mainly Jewish ancestry. His(and my) paternal lines are the R1b haplogroup and they go back to the Irish Kings but in around 1400 my forefather married a woman with Jewish ancestry and they continued marrying people with Jewish ancestry pretty much all the way to my g grandfather-though they were Christians by religion. I had never really known about how much of an impact 1066ad had on Britain and the Jews that William the Conqueror had given lands and titles to. Like half of even my Anglo ancestors seem to go back to these main families like Gordon, Livingstone, Stanley, Stewart, Beauchamp, de Brus, etc. I wonder if Jews and British people are aware of these ancestral connections? Pretty neat. Thanks for all you do!

Reminds me of a one-semester course I used to teach at MIT - in which we attempted to give graduate students the ability to comprehend Russian written material IN THEIR FIELD (we had the same courses for French and German and I believe Spanish). We taught them the alphabet and a minimal amount of grammar, and then had them do a LOT of reading of texts in their field. If the student really cared, s/he could learn enough in the space of one semester to really really read things in their field. And most did learn enough to pass their exam in a foreign language, required in order to get an advanced degree. One student really wanted it as a "doorway" to understanding the names and sometimes the texts of songs he encountered in international folk dancing - he's still around and active, and I think his Russian training to this day stands him in good stead!

Is there anything else known about the Galimidi surname? My grandmother was once told by her uncle that there were 2 Galimidi families in Constantinople that were not related to each other (probably were related many many years ago). My great grandfather's surname was Galimidi and I don't know much about his family past his parents. Was surprised to also see that the origin of the Galimidi surname was Romaniote. I thought it was Sephardic.

My grandfather's name was Ghitia Klinitzki/Klinitzi my grandmothers name was Pessia. They had three sons while in Russia. They immigrated to Canada in 1924. The village name was Kirlovtcy/Kurilovtsi. my husband's DNA came back nearly 20 % Ashkenazi I I joined Latvia digest as the DNA said his family's origins were Latvia, I'm still looking for the Luebke or Lupke ancestors. that came over to Wisconsin and married into the Reiss family though.

Like thousands of people we discovered our Jewish heritage when we found my grandmother who had been buried in an unmarked grave who had not been visited or remembered for 80 years. This led to my daughter and I officially "returning" to our heritage in Nov. 2012. We found our maternal ancestors are connected to the Gormezano family in Spain and Amsterdam as are my husband's ancestors from Palermo Sicily. We are descendants of the Anusim (the forced ones) and the Crypto Jews (converts to the Catholic faith who practiced their Jewish heritage in hiding) during the siege of the Spanish Inquisition that lasted 350 years. We have fervently studied Torah and are enthusiastic and are observant SephardicJews today. I am presently writing our geneaology. Hi how does Jewish community feel about adopted people? I found in DNA I am half Jewish. My mother was not Jewish . So now I have family tree linking to Jewish family, but they do not seem to believe I am connected , they are negative to taking a test to help me find who is my father. Is this because I was not brought up Jewish?? Without someone taking a test I can never find who was my father ! I.m 60 now.

My wife and sons are also descendants of Rashi -- leading them up to the Davidic royal family. Love this stuff. What can I say? Personally I built a tree on my Mom's side that goes about 13 generations. Meeting up with cousins I never met before this summer in NY. Can't wait. :)

I am trying to understand how to use this website. But can anyone help me out regarding my ancestory DNA results. The results came back with 68% European, but how do you break it down from there to know if there could be Jewish blood line in there?My GrandMothers maiden name was Seifert and born in Russia, in Roseberg and immigrated in very early 1900's to Canada and then to San Fransisco.I was really hoping the DNA test would tell me that I have Jewish connections. I'm looking for anyone with the name of Zambursky. This was my Mother's maiden name. I know nothing about this set of grandparents. I know that my grandfather died around 1914 in, I think London, England. My grandmother, his wife, died in 1939 also in London, England. I have no first names and no other details right now. They would probably have been born in mid to late 1800's, likely Eastern Europe. Also does anyone know where the name Benny comes from. This was my late husband's last name. I've been trying to convert to Judaism for several months, been studying my Torah and learn Hebrew and everything. Decided to use JewishGen and found my moms-moms-mom on there thus making me Jewish. So I found a conservative Synagogue and will begin taking classes there so I can live Jewish. This site is amazing, thank you!
